bluefieldRocks 14 Report Share Posted January 29, 2009 You can't make this up... Rice University's own mascot, Sammy the Owl, got ejected (who even knew that was possible?) from the school's game against Tulane last night after apparently arguing a call and refusing to move off the baseline to allow for the inbounds pass. But it turns out there was more. Wait until CBS replays the last bucket (about 1:40 in) and watch as Sammy headbutts referee Curtis Shaw. http://ncaabasketball.fanhouse.com/2009/01/29/rices-mascot-sammy-the-owl-ejected-for-headbutting-a-referree/ video inside that link
Hacker 82 Report Share Posted January 29, 2009 The ref has the freedom to call techicals on cheerleaders, fans and mascots if they are disrupting the game. I have seen HS refs T up crowds, throw fans out of the game etc. It is rare, but does happen.
Deleted Account 5,203 Report Share Posted January 30, 2009 My first thought was: why couldn't that referee have been Karl Hess? My second thought: what a despicable and disgraceful action. Even if it would've been Karl Hess. It's only fitting that Tulane beat Rice in the closing moments.
