tbgfan 856 Report Share Posted February 23, 2009 Castlewood Claims Top Seeds In Region D, Division 2 By Tim Hayes Sports Writer / Bristol Herald Courier Published: February 22, 2009 There were plenty of questions surrounding the Castlewood High School boys basketball team when the season tipped off in November. The Blue Devils had a new head coach in Wayne Rasnick and had to replace a pair of 1,000-point scorers who graduated from a state tournament team. “I think everybody picked us fourth in the district,†Rasnick said. “But we set some goals coming into the year and we achieved those.†The Blue Devils did so well, in fact, that they earned the top seed for the Region D, Division 2 tournament when the pairings were released Sunday. Castlewood compiled a 20-3 record and swept the Cumberland District regular-season and tournament titles behind a balanced attack. The Blue Devils will host Cumberland District-rival Coeburn (16-8) Wednesday in a first-round game. Other Division 2 first-round games Wednesday include No. 7 Lebanon (18-5) at No. 2 Gate City (17-7) in a matchup of Clinch Mountain District rivals, No. 6 J.J. Kelly (16-9) at No. 3 Virginia High (17-7) and No. 5 Powell Valley (14-10) at No. 4 Honaker (12-13). In the Division 1 tournament, Black Diamond District regular-season and tournament champion Twin Valley (20-4) was awarded the top seed. The Panthers host St. Paul (9-13) Wednesday in a first-round game. The other Division 1 quarterfinals will see Lonesome Pine District champion Appalachia (21-3) hosting seventh-seeded Hurley (10-14), No. 6 J.I. Burton (8-13) at No. 3 Twin Springs (15-10) and No. 5 Thomas Walker (11-12) at fourth-seeded Council (14-10). The Division 1 semifinals will be Friday at Castlewood, while the Division 2 semifinals are at Lebanon. GIRLS Castlewood (17-7) also secured the top spot in the Region D, Division 2 girls tournament. The Blue Devils will host Russell County-rival Lebanon on Tuesday in a first-round game. Coach Barry Ruff’s team has already won twice against the Pioneers in convincing fashion. Meanwhile, John Battle will be at Lee High (18-5) Tuesday in a matchup of Clinch Mountain District rivals. Battle is making its first regional tournament appearance since 1998. Other first-round games will pit sixth-seeded J.J. Kelly (18-7) at No. 3 Virginia High (16-7) and No. 5 Powell Valley at No. 4 Honaker (18-6). The Region D, Division 1 quarterfinal matchups on Tuesday will be Haysi (11-10) at top-seeded J.I. Burton (20-3), Pound (13-11) at Council (21-3), Ervinton (15-8) at Rye Cove (14-11) and Twin Springs (9-16) at Twin Valley (15-9). The Division 1 semifinals are Thursday at Castlewood, with the Division 2 semifinals at Lebanon. All the Region D boys and girls title games will be contested Saturday at Virginia High’s Bearcat Den. thayes@bristolnews.com| (276) 645-2570 Life has many choices---eternity has two
