Guest BEAVERTAIL Report Share Posted September 8, 2009 We have to stop the run in order to continue our success. Otherwise, teams can control the clock if they have the lead and make it hard to come back. But, its more wins than Ive seen at my time here! Should be 3-0 after this weekend... capanther 10 Author Report Share Posted September 12, 2009 Undefeated Concord at ‘home’ in Princeton to take on Bobcats By TOM BONE Bluefield Daily Telegraph ATHENS — The resurgent Concord University football team will look to go 3-0 this evening at Princeton’s Anne S. Hunnicutt Stadium when they play the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats in the “Rotary Bowl†to open both teams’ conference schedule. Offered in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Princeton, gate proceeds from the “Rotary Bowl†will be used for the club’s charitable efforts, according to the Concord athletic office. “It’s a home game, yet it’s not at home, which is a little bit different,†said Concord coach Mike Kellar. “A high school field is marked differently. The hashes are not the same,†Kellar said. “I’ve told my kids to get that out of their heads and not use it as an excuse.†“The biggest challenge for us is coming off a big up-and-down roller-coaster emotional victory, to regroup and then go out and play well again this week.†Each of the reigning West Virginia Conference players of the week will be in the house Saturday. Concord receiver Thomas Mayo and kicker Brandon Strupp claimed the offense and special teams honors, while Wesleyan defensive end Nic Wilson earned his honor with eight tackles, including three sacks, as well as forcing a fumble. A halftime ceremony will recognize Concord’s first-team all-conference football players from years past. The Mountain Lions beat Lenoir-Rhyne 52-45 last Saturday in Athens. The team put up more than 50 points for the second week in a row — a Concord football first — but needed them all. “Last week was a bit of an anomaly because of (Lenoir-Rhyne’s) style,†Kellar said. “But last week was last week. We’ve told our defense to learn from it, learn from their mistakes and have a good week of preparation ... and we’ll do everything we can to get ready for this one.†Offensively, Concord’s stats are among the nation’s best. Thomas Mayo, D2football.com’s co-offense player of the week, leads NCAA Division II with an average of 202.5 receiving yards per game. Quarterback Zack Grossi is sixth nationally in pass efficiency after throwing for 665 yards, eight TDs and no interceptions. Brian Kennedy is averaging 100.5 yards per game running the ball for the Mountain Lions, and Dennis Cole is an equal threat. Wesleyan fired 26-year head coach Bill Struble last year after the Bobcats went 1-10. Their only win was a 31-26 defeat of Concord, capped by a last-minute touchdown run by Aaron Echard. The new head coach at Wesleyan, Denny Creehan, is a Pittsburgh native whose coaching career includes being defensive coordinator for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. He has also coached at his alma mater, Edinboro (Pa.), and at Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon, Army, Duke, Rutgers, Arkansas State, South Dakota and San Francisco State. He was a finalist for the Concord job now held by Kellar. Kellar said, “I think Coach Creehan does a nice job with them. They’re totally different than they were a year ago. ... Offensively, they’re similar to us.†Wesleyan has had a strange season already. Its first game was canceled with only two days’ notice when St. Paul’s (Va.) informed them their order of helmets and pads had not arrived, according to an Associated Press story. Last Saturday, at Urbana, Ohio, the Bobcats lost 20-19 on a field goal by the Blue Knights as time expired. Wesleyan ran up 216 rushing yards and accumulated 390 yards of total offense in the loss. The defense sacked the Urbana quarterback six times. Running back Reggie Taylor, who ran for 192 yards last Saturday, has gone over 100 yards in six of his 11 games at Wesleyan. Two former three-year starters for Princeton Senior High School, Seth Angell and T.J. Benners are “coming home†to Hunnicutt Stadium on Saturday. Angell is a freshman on the Concord offensive line who is likely to be redshirted for this season. Benners is a sophomore receiver for the Bobcats. Both won Princeton’s Tanner Otey booster scholarship award in their senior season of high school. Jason Jackson, a graduate of James Monroe High, is a sophomore linebacker for the Bobcats. As a running back last fall, he scored a touchdown against Concord to give Wesleyan its first lead of the game. Admission to the game is $5 and kickoff is at 6 p.m. Radio coverage is on The New River, 102.3 FM. — Contact Tom Bone at

Pirate1 10 Report Share Posted September 13, 2009 Got to see Concord tonight, man, what a difference coaching can make. Looks nothing like the team from last year at all. Hope the qb for Concord, Grossi? is ok looked like they had that knee pretty well wrapped on the sideline. Don't know how many games they'll end up winning this year, but at least this year they should be very competitive with most of the teams on their schedule Also, was a good crowd for tonight, I was a little bit suprised at that. Overall, just a great night to watch a game, and a fun game to watch.
