Abingdon

 

District, Region: Southwest, Region IV

 

Group, Division: Group AA, Division 4

 

Coach: Rhonda Engle

 

Last season: 4-17, 2-10

 

Key returners: Bri Pruitt, PG, jr.; Logan Viers, soph. (12.6 points per game); Lynsi Viers, sr.

 

Promising newcomers: Katelyn Stewart (5-10, jr.)

 

Key losses: Lauren Wilson (11.8 ppg.)

 

Outlook: Pruitt and Logan Viers return to the starting lineup.

 

Along with Stewart, the regulars include junior Hannah Bays and sophomores Kayla Hilt and Madison Turner. Stewart and Bays supply the size on a team which relies on five sophomores.

 

Abingdon fell 55-54 to Richlands in the SWD tourney last season

 

The Falcons opened this season with a 36-35 win over Virginia High, as Turner scored 13 points and Stewart added 10.

Carroll County

 

District, Region: Southwest, Region IV

 

Group, Division: Group AA, Division 4

 

Coach: Marc Motley (9th season)

 

Last season: 19-5, 12-0

 

Key returners: Cheyenne Dalton F, jr.; Rachel Dalton PG, jr.(7.2 ppg.); Lindsay Martin G, jr., (10 ppg.); Maleah Neely, F, (6.3 rpg.)

 

Promising newcomers: Crysta Guynn, fr.; Taylor Martin, so.

 

Key losses: Kayla Goins, Cydnie Cornell, Kaitlin Viars

 

Outlook: The Cavaliers have ruled the SWD, winning the regular season title in 10 of the past 11 years.

 

Goins, now playing at Ferrum College, will be hard to replace. She earned second-team All-Group AA honors last season in addition to first-team honors in the SWD and Region IV

 

Dalton averaged two assists and two steals last season, while Martin also collected two steals per game.

 

Motley must replace five seniors, but the Cavs still have talent. Neely was the SWD player of the year in volleyball.

 

Speed and outside shooting are team strengths, while size and youth are concerns.

 

Carroll County lost 53-44 to Bassett in the Region IV tournament last season. The Cavaliers then dropped a 62-46 decision to Spotswood in Division 4 play

Graham

Group, Division: Group AA, Division 3

 

Coach: Tracy Raban

 

Last season: 14-12, 5-5

 

Key returners: Mariah Lampert, G, sr.; Maegan Henry F, sr.

 

Promising newcomers: N/A

 

Key losses: Chelsea Gallinger (17.3 ppg.); Kelli Landreth (10.9 ppg.)

 

Outlook: The G-Girls earned their second straight state tournament berth last season. And for the second straight year, Graham fell to Robert E. Lee.

 

Lambert and Henry are two of six returning seniors. Liz Workman, Ashley Simpson and Liz Rasnake will also be regulars. Graham opened this season with a 46-43 win over Bluefield, as Lampert scored 19 points.

 

Landreth is now playing at Emory & Henry, while Gallinger is at Kentucky Christian.

Grundy

Key returners: Emily Rife, sr.; Hannah Stiltner, jr.; Samantha Owens, jr.; Loni Webb, soph.; Krystal Cantrell, soph.

 

Promising newcomers: N/A

 

Key losses: N/A

 

Outlook: With five returning starters, the Golden Wave should be a contender for the SWD title.

 

Rife will be the leader in the post.

 

Grundy defeated Richlands 36-34 in overtime to claim third place in the SWD tournament. The Golden Wave then fell 54-51 to Tunstall in the Region IV playoffs.

Marion

 

District, Region: Southwest, Region IV

 

Group, Division: Group AA, Division 3

 

Coach: Sallie Moss

 

Last season: 10-10, 2-9

 

Key returners: Elizabeth Rakes P, jr.; Brooke Henderson, PG, jr. (10.5 ppg.); Taloni Dalton, G, sr.); Savannah O'Keefe, G, jr.

 

Promising newcomers: Callie Mellinger, C, soph.; Ali Moore, G, soph.; Bailey Ratliff, F, soph.

 

Key losses: Morgan Goodbrod, Suzy Thompson, Miranda Hayden

 

Outlook: Rakes, Dalton and Henderson all return to the starting lineup.

 

Henderson (10.5 ppg.) is one of the top shooters in the district, while Dalton and Mellinger supply quickness.

 

The Scarlet Hurricane lost 50-37 to Graham in the first round of the SWD tourney last year.

 

Marion won its first two games this season as Henderson averaged 12.5 ppg.

Tazewell

 

District, Region: Southwest, Region IV

 

Group, Division: Group AA, Division 3

 

Coach: Rodney Reid

 

Last season: 6-15, 3-6

 

Key returners: Iesha Mountain, sr.; Katie Snapp, soph.; Kim Ruble, soph.

 

Promising newcomers: Bridgett Cook, Breanna Sparks, Kaley Holloway, Emily Whited, Morgan Pauley, Taylor Catron

 

Key losses: Kelsey Sutherland (17.9 ppg.), Katelyn Mitchell.

 

Outlook: Reid replaced Bill Mitchell as the Bulldog coach. He’s a former head coach at Tazewell and Pocahontas.

 

Catron, Samantha Boothe, Olivia Hart and Autumn Hash will join Mountain in the starting lineup. Mountain is the lone returning starter.

 

Speed and attitude are strongpoint, while inexperience is a concern.

 

After losing to Grundy 45-26 in the SWD tourney, the Bulldogs defeated Richlands 53-48 in the Region IV playoffs.

 

Mountain and Catron combined for 29 points in a 39-29 win over Blacksburg earlier this season.

Richlands

Coach: James Cochran

 

Last season: 13-10, 9-3

 

Key returners: Micka Brady sr.; Megan Robinson, sr. (13.2 ppg.); Kelli Hess, jr.

 

Promising newcomer: Brittany Allen, fr.

 

Key losses: Cassie Ringstaff, Evan Ferrell, Rani Ratliff

 

Outlook: Robinson was a first-team All-SWD pick last season.

 

Allen will be a player to watch. She scored 17 points as the Blue Tornado dropped a 60-55 decision to Clinch Mountain District to start this season.

 

Richlands lost 42-40 to Graham in last season’s SWD tournament semifinals and then fell 36-34 to Grundy in the third place. The season ended with a 53-48 loss to Tazewell in Region IV play.

 

Carroll County defeated Richlands in the SWD JV title game.
