fantastic 2010 season concluded with the Briar Woods Falcons and the Poquoson Islanders each capturing their first state football championships in Division Four and Division Three, respectively, at Williams Stadium on the campus of Liberty University in Lynchburg.

Included in all of the outstanding team performances this season were some incredible individual efforts and with the release of the 2010 VirginiaPreps.com AA All-State Team, we hope to honor as many of those as we can.

For the 2010 VirginiaPreps.com AA All-State Team, we choose to name only twelve honorees on both sides of the ball with three specialists and two coaches comprising the entirety of our roster as we opt for exclusivity rather than inclusion in hopes of keeping the team limited only to the extremely special performances from the year.

As always, the offense will include two running backs, wide receivers, tackles and guards with one player named at quarterback, tight end, center and athlete. The defense (using a traditional high school 4-4 alignment) will include four linemen, four linebackers, three defensive backs and one athlete. In the specialists category, we name one kicker, one punter and one kick returner.

Of special note is that rather than using the "athlete" position as a spot to name a multi-purpose versatile player, we use it more as a "catch-all" position where we include a player who we felt had to be honored.

With that, VirginiaPreps.com proudly presents our Double A All-State team. Today we feature the first team offensive unit!

FIRST TEAM OFFENSE

Patrick Derrickson

Briar Woods / Senior

Center

Derrickson, a unanimous Dulles District choice and the first-team Region II center, was the cog in the middle of the talented Briar Woods offense. The Falcons averaged around 300 yards of offense per game and, with a freshman quarterback lining up in multiple formations, including shotgun and under center, Derrickson was consistent all season long.

Dustin Edwards

Poquoson / Junior

Guard

Edwards was the standout lineman for the Division 3 state champion Islanders. The junior guard helped pave the way for a dominant rushing attack, as the Poquoson offense ran for over 4,000 yards as a team and averaged just under 300 yards rushing per game.

Jaron Rice

Brunswick / Senior

Guard

Rice, at 6-4, 325, was a massive presence for Brunswick and was a force for the Bulldogs all season long. He totaled 50 pancake blocks in 2010 and the Bulldogs followed his lead to over 240 yards rushing per game during the regular season.

Landon Turner

Harrisonburg / Senior

Tackle

The leader of the Harrisonburg offensive line that paved the way for over 3,000 rushing yards on the season, Turner was the lone returning starter among the group in 2010. At 6-5, 320, he showed very good mobility and was often sent in motion as a lead blocker for running back Michael Holmes.

Will Campbell

James Monroe / Senior

Tackle

Yellow Jacket senior was a unanimous Battlefield District and Region I selection and collected 58 pancake blocks on an offense that had a 1,400 yard runner and mobile quarterback. Also a defensive force, registering 42 tackles in just six games of defensive duty.

Salim Charles

Harrisonburg / Junior

Tight End

The 6-7 junior was the Blue Streaks top receiver in 2010 and also earned acclaim at defensive end. On offense, he led AA tight ends with 583 yards receiving on 28 catches (20.8 yards per catch) and found the end zone eight times.

Deshon Foxx

Brookville / Senior

Wide Receiver

In the high-powered Brookville offense that averaged 35.5 points per game, Foxx presented matchup problems all over the field. He played in the slot and in the backfield and had 33 catches and 94 carries for 1,253 total yards, an average of 9.9 yards per touch.

Bradley Strong

Richlands / Senior

Wide Receiver

Strong was an absolute nightmare for opposing teams in 2010, scoring 22 touchdowns overall, including 12 through the air and six on kickoff or punt returns. He caught 46 passes for 711 yards in 2010 and was named the Southwest District's offensive player of the year, and was a first-team selection at kick returner and defensive back, where he had six interceptions (three for touchdowns).

Michael Holmes

Harrisonburg / Senior

Running Back

The two-time region III player of the year, Holmes followed up his 2009 AA Player of the Year effort with an outstanding 2010 season. He led the Blue Streaks to the Division 4 Finals and rushed for 2,878 yards and accounted for 41 touchdowns on the season.

Deandre Reaves

Dominion / Senior

Running Back

Reaves earned the Dulles District Division 3 Player of the Year award and led Dominion to its first ever playoff berth in region II in 2010. The senior ran for 1,780 yards and 28 touchdowns (including two games with six touchdowns), passed for 120 yards and returned 3 kickoffs for touchdowns.

Garrett Diehl

Fauquier / Senior

Quarterback

Diehl, the Region II Offensive Player of the Year, led the Falcons to a playoff berth in region II and was the leader on both sides of the ball for Fauquier. On offense, he threw for 2,241 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushed for 1,161 yards and 20 touchdowns. Defensively, he finished with four interceptions (one for TD), a fumble recovery and 70 tackles.

Harvey Taylor

Magna Vista / Junior

Athlete

The Piedmont District and Region IV offensive player of the year was virtually unstoppable for much of the 2010 season. Taylor led the Warriors to the Region IV, Division 4 title game and accounted for 3,452 yards (over 2,000 passing and over 1,400 rushing) in 13 games. He also accounted for 44 touchdowns, 19 through the air and 25 on the ground as Magna Vista averaged over 40 points per game.
