Figured I would post this since Bristol Hearald can't seem to print the score when Abingdon loses unless it is to Va High. LOL

Cavs earn huge SWD win at Abingdon

Reece Edwards struck out nine and hurled a three-hit shutout April 23 as Carroll County opened Southwest District play with a huge 2-0 road win at preseason district favorite Abingdon.

Edwards threw 127 pitches and worked his way out of a couple of jams to record the shutout, while Bronson Bowman went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run.

After Edwards gave up a leadoff walk to start the game, Carroll County (5-4, 1-0 SWD) catcher Josh Underwood threw out Jacob Meade trying to steal second. Edwards issued one more walk before striking out Cody Hahn to end the inning.

Edwards again issued a leadoff walk in the third to Jacob Doss, but Underwood again caught an Abingdon (9-3, 2-1 SWD) base runner trying to steal second. Edwards retired the next four batters he faced before giving up a two-out walk in the fourth. He struck out Reid Halsey to end the inning, however.

The Carroll pitcher faced his biggest threat in the bottom of the fifth after hitting Lukas Hart with a pitch with two outs. Doss followed with a single and Cameron Phillips walked to load the bases, but Hart was caught trying to steal home for the third out.

Edwards issued a one-out single to Andrew Francisco in the sixth, but struck out the next two he faced. Ratliff ripped a one-out double for the Falcons in the seventh, but Edwards got the next batter to pop out to center before Ratliff was caught trying to steal third for the final out.

Hahn also threw a masterpiece for the Falcons, allowing just four hits and two runs in a complete-game effort. But Carroll got all the scoring it would need in top of the third after Bowman singled to center, took second base on a passed ball and crossed home plate on Ryan Gravley’s RBI single to right.

The Cavaliers added an insurance run in the seventh after Kenley Meredith reached base after being hit by a pitch. Courtesy runner B.J. Utt moved to second on a Seth Burris sacrifice, then took third on a passed ball before scoring on Blake Wood’s RBI sacrifice for a 2-0 lead.

Carroll nearly added another run after Taylor Case reached on an error and Bowman singled to right. Case took third on a throwing error, but was thrown out at home for the third out.

Gravley went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Cavs, while Edwards helped his own cause by going 1-for-3 at the plate.
