PD All-District football team

After winning the Piedmont District title, the Magna Vista football team took all the top individual honors as well.

Running back Quentin Preston and linebacker D.J. Preston were named the PD's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year respectively, while Magna Vista coach Joe Beckelheimer was named the coach of the year.

Quentin had an impressive season rushing, racking up 1,184 yards on 100 carries and 13 touchdowns in the regular season. On top of that he rushed for another 137 yards in Friday's playoff win over Richlands. Quentin also was named to the first team for his play on the defense as a defensive back.

Beckelheimer has been impressed with the skills and attitude of his senior tailback.

"Quentin has a lot of speed," Beckelheimer said. "He's pretty strong. He is very unselfish. He leads by example and he hasn't complained about a thing all year. We had a young line, but they came on and opened up things for him. I just think he did a heck of a job being patient with those guys. He's also done one heck of a job lead blocking for our fullback."

D.J. has been leading an impressive Warriors' defense all season. He's racked up 107 tackles on the season with four sacks and an interception. In addition to his outstanding defensive performance, Preston was also a first team selection as tight end. He pulled in 13 catches for 380 yards with five TDs.

D.J. enjoyed the award and attributes it to simple leadership.

"It's an honor," D.J. said. "I guess somebody saw that I try to work hard everyday and try to help my teammates play the best they can play so that we can win as a team."

Beckelheimer credits D.J. for his workhorse mentality.

"He does it all for us," Beckelheimer said. "Once the game starts he never comes off the field, the only time I get to talk to him is during halftime and time-outs. He's carried a whole lot of the team on his shoulders, especially while these young guys have been getting experience. He really led those guys in the right direction."

As for his award, Beckelheimer deflected the credit onto his assistant coaches and team.

"I think that's a credit to our whole staff," Beckelheimer said. "It takes everybody working together. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be where we are. The kids responded well to the coaches and the whole thing has just been a blessing."
