Upcoming Tournament at Grundy H.S.

Grundy High School holds an annual tournament after Christmas... The Agie Skeens Memorial Wrestling Tournament. This year it will be on December 29-30, 2003(Monday and Tuesday) at the new Middle School-Riverview M.S...To get their go into town, instead of taking a right at the T,(like you're going to the High School), you take a left and the school is not too far-it is on the right. This is always an exciting tournament with very good competition from all up and down the east coast. There are many teams in SW Virginia and Southern WV competing. Here are some teams in SW Va and So. WV that usually compete: Grundy, Abingdon, Martinsville, Richlands, Rural Retreat, Northwood, JJ Kelly, Shady Spring-WV. Other teams from up and down the east coast include: Mount Anthony Union-Vermont, Warren Area-Pennsylvania, Sheldon Clark-Kentucky, Lugoff Elgin-South Carolina, Alleghany-North Carolina, Vestavia Hills-Alabama, Rock Hill-South Carolina...plus more. Other powerhouse teams in Virginia include AA Fort Defiance, AA Turner Ashby, AA Northside, A Manassas Park, AAA Franklin County...and many more. Go and enjoy some great wrestling!!!!!

I will be the first to admit I have never watched a wrestling match but I was almost certain that Grundy always won this tournament. Is this the first time they have lost in a long time or does anyone know. I know that someone does as nobody cares about any sport in Grundy except for wrestling. I never hear of people show up to watch wrestlers lose like our "Great" fans show up at every football playoff game to watch seniors in their "last game" . This is not a joke either Grundy fans and Grundy football players can verify this. This year students were laughing when the players came off the field in tears after a heart breaking loss.

 

Anyways, just wondering how they do in this tournament every year and for the record I hope they get back on track and start winning again as there are some very deserving, not to mention nice, students on that team.

 

Also more people should come watch all of Grundy's sports as even I myself will try to take in a wrestling match or two this season to support Grundy athletics.

Grundy hasn't won this tournament in about 3 years. I know that Mount Anthony Union from Vermont had won it the past two years, and Turner Ashby this year.
