Freshman football player arrested

An All-State running back from western Virginia and incoming University of Virginia football player was arrested Saturday in Charlottesville on charges of underage alcohol possession and obstruction of justice, both misdemeanors.

A city police officer who was patrolling Elliewood Avenue at around 1:50 a.m. approached Ahmad Rashad Bradshaw, 18, of Bluefield, who was charged in the incident.

The officer noticed Bradshaw was holding a plastic cup and asked what kind of drink he had, city police Sgt. Steve Dillon said.

Bradshaw stated it was an alcoholic beverage, Dillon said. The officer then asked for his identification and Bradshaw gave the name and date of birth for a subject who was dead.

Bradshaw, who ran track in high school and has rushed for 5,265 yards in his career according to virginiasports.com, fled on foot.

The officer chased Bradshaw from Elliewood Avenue to the Rotunda, Dillon said. Bradshaw struggled briefly with the officer and was taken to the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. He was released Saturday on a $1,000 unsecured bond.

Dillon said that if Bradshaw had cooperated with police he likely would have been issued a summons and released at the scene.

Bradshaw was named No. 8 on The Daily Progress’ Gold List and hailed as the 25th-best running back in the country, according to sports recruiting magazine SuperPrep.

He also has been recognized as a standout basketball player, scoring more than 1,000 points in his career according to virginiasports.com.

Ahmad may have more things to worry about than getting arrested, more like keeping his scholarship. Not because of his arrest though, but that Charlottesville has cops who can run him down.
