Highly touted University of Virginia signee Ahmad Bradshaw will instead begin his college career today as a member of the Marshall University football team.

Bradshaw, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound running back from Bluefield, Va., will walk on to the Thundering Herd squad, which begins preseason camp today at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Herd coach Bob Pruett spoke matter-of-factly Sunday about Bradshaw’s arrival. “He has decided to walk on here. We’re happy to have him,†Pruett said.

Bradshaw’s career with the Cavaliers ended before it began. While attending summer school in Charlottesville, he allegedly was spotted by police July 17 with an open container. Police said he gave inaccurate idenfication, then ran from officers.

On July 22, Groh issued a one-sentence declaration that Bradshaw would not play for the Cavs this fall. Neither Bradshaw’s future on the team nor his status as a UVa student were disclosed.

The 18-year-old Bradshaw is charged with obstruction of justice and has a Friday court date in Charlottesville. The charge is a Class 1 misdemeanor in Virginia, and carries penalties of up to a year in jail and/or a maximum $2,500 fine.

Bradshaw, two years behind Herd walk-on running back Paco Jones at Graham High, was a Group AA All-State football and basketball player. He rushed for 5,265 yards and scored 92 touchdowns in his career, and was ranked among the top dozen prospects in Virginia by several media outlets.

I had a friend of mine who goes to Marshall and lives in the room next to Ahmad tell me that Ahmad said he was 2nd string halfback behind Earl Charles at this point and that he would be seeing playing time in the first game of the year on special teams against Troy St.
