Bragging rights belong to Beavers

BLUEFIELD - It was a border battle that truly pitted brother against brother as Bluefield's two high schools met Friday night on the court at Bluefield State College.

The opening tip saw Graham senior Kevin Matthews jumping against his brother, Bluefield junior Tremayne Matthews.

In the end it was the younger brother Tremayne and his Beavers who claimed a 69-60 victory in part one of the Basketball Battle of the Bluefields.

The Beavers led early by as many as seven points, that lead coming on a Dexter Moore steal and layup with a minute left in the opening quarter to make the score 18-11. Bluefield was up 18-13 after one.

The G-Men would come on strong in the second period. Paced by nine points from Eric Hoosier, Graham would take a 33-29 lead into the halftime intermission.

Bluefield came out pressing and quickly retook the lead 35-33 in the first two minutes of the third quarter. A pesky defense and buckets by Jordan Manns, Rusty Coeburn and Jonathan Repass propelled the Beavers ahead.

"We just came out with a little more intensity," said Bluefield head coach Ernie Gilliard. "We felt like in the second quarter they out-scrapped us, out-hustled us, so we just talked about desire, intensity and playing Bluefield basketball.

The lead was short-lived as Jake Remines popped a three to put Graham back on top...for the last time. Graham would score only three more points in the third compared to 27 for the Beavers who were ahead by 17, 57-39 headed into the final stanza.

Graham fought back, cutting into the Bluefield lead in the final minutes of the game, but it proved too little, too late for the G-Men as the Beavers claimed the 69-60 win.

"We shot 19-for-62 for the game," said Graham head coach Glynn Carlock Jr. "We pretty much shot ourselves out of it, I thought, and our defensive presence wasn't there in the second half, either.

"When you give up a five or six point lead you have at halftime in three possessions, that always hurts."

The Beavers had a trio of players in double-digits led by Tremayne Matthews with 16. Dexter Moore and Jonathan Repass had 15 apiece.

Jake Remines took game scoring honors with 19 points for the G-Men.

"It was a very physical game and that was to our liking," Gilliard said. "We've got some kids who are two-sport people, some football players, so we're pleased with the outcome of a physical game. We did want to pound it inside and we did a good job doing that tonight."

"I think we need to play better defense," Carlock said. "Their height gave them a good rebounding presence and we didn't do a good job boxing out, keeping them off the boards."

Bluefield returns to action Tuesday at the Bank One Classic in Logan against Logan. Graham hosts Virginia High also on Tuesday.

I'm just curious about whether or not the fans (students) behave themselves at the Graham/Beaver b-ball games these days? When I was in school there was always trouble before during and after the games. I think they even stopped playing each other for a while in b-ball didn't they?
