BLUEFIELD BLASTS WAYNE: Daniel Wells pulled the ball away from Wayne quarterback Nick Newell and returned the fumble 63 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive of the Class AA championship. The good fortune was a foreshadowing of events to come as Bluefield recovered six fumbles and intercepted two passes on it ways to a resounding 69-24 victory.

The win was sweet redemption for Bluefield (14-0), which lost the AA title game to Poca a season ago when a botched extra point kick cost the Beavers from forcing a second overtime.

The time, most of the bounces went Bluefield’s way, and the Beavers knew what to do to capitalize on those breaks. The Beavers defense scored two other times -- a 3-yard fumble return by T.J. Morris in the third quarter and an 80-yard interception return by Mike Davis, also in the third quarter. When the defense wasn’t scoring, it was setting up the offense with prime field position. On Wayne’s second possession, a botched punt resulted in first-and-goal for the Beavers at the Wayne 1. David Perdue ran it in from there for a 13-0 lead.

With only 84 yards of offense, Bluefield held a 28-0 lead at the half. The lead grew to 49-6 in the third quarter before Wayne (13-1) got its composure and began running an effective offense.

Bluefield quarterback Rusty Coeburn was named his team’s MVP. He threw for 121 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and also recovered one of the Wayne fumbles. Wayne running back Josh Power, who ran for 127 yards and a touchdown, was named his team’s MVP.

Bluefield’s Derrick Steptoe ran for two touchdowns and 39 yards. Quintin Steptoe added 46 yards on eight carries and intercepted a pass on defense. Newell threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns for Wayne.

The victory marked Bluefield’s second AA championship and eighth overall.

Bluefield coach proves tradition doesn’t graduate

Fred Simon became school’s winningest coach in 2004

By Tom Needham, NFLHS.com

Coach Fred Simon’s 2004 Bluefield squad completed a perfect 14-0 season by establishing a Class AA championship record 69 points in its 69-24 victory over Wayne. It marked the second championship and second perfect season for the Beavers under Simon, who also guided the team to the title in 1997.

Along the way in 2004, Simon became the school’s all-time winningest coach with a 136-83 record, compiled from 1986 to 2004. Simon’s success is the latest in a line of successful coaches at the school. Amazingly, Bluefield has only had three coaches since 1959, and all of them have enjoyed much success as the school has won eight football championships during that span.

The lineage of success began in 1959 when the late Merrill Gainer took over the program. Gainer coached the Beavers until 1967 and guided the team to four state titles. Gainer posted an incredible 87-6-1 record.

The late John Chmara followed Gainer and kept the wins coming. He coached from 1968-1985 with a record of 130-53-1. Chmara’s 1975 and 1984 teams won the school’s fifth and sixth championships.

Three coaches, spanning 46 years, with an overall 353-142-2 record and eight state titles? It’s safe to say the bar is set high at Bluefield. Whoever fills Simon’s shoes when he decides to retire will have a lot to live up to, but Bluefield seems pretty good at making the right choice.

BROKEN RECORDS: Speaking of records and the Class AA championship game, the 2004 game between Bluefield and Wayne set or matched a bevy of them -- 12 to be exact. There were so many records set that the number of records set, excluding the inaugural Class AA title game, is probably a record as well. Many of them were for outstanding play, while Wayne would just as soon forget some of them.

Wayne quarterback Nick Newell’s name sits beside three passing marks -- passing yards (212), touchdowns (3) and the longest touchdown pass in the game’s history, a 73-yard connection to Jake Gilliam.

On the negative side, however, Wayne set records for fumbles (7), fumbles lost (6) and touchdowns allowed (nine).

Rusty Coeburn, Bluefield’s quarterback, joins Newell on the passing touchdowns list with three of his own. Bluefield kicker Lucas Stone connected a on a game-record 41-yard field goal, and the Beavers notched team records for points scored (69) and margin of defeat (45).

The Miracle at Mitchell...

BLUEFIELD COMPLETES WILD COMEBACK: For No. 1 Bluefield, the 21-20 overtime Class AA semifinal victory over Weir will serve as a comeback win that will be remembered among the schools' all-time great victories. For Weir, it was a painful loss, one that will likely sting for quite some time. The No. 5 Red Riders, who lost to Bluefield in the playoffs a year earlier, held a 14-0 lead with only 2:28 remaining to play. Facing a fourth-and-2 in Bluefield territory, the Riders (10-3) threw a pass, but Bluefield's Michael Davis made the play of the year for his team by intercepting and running 70 yards for a touchdown.

Bluefield (13-0) then successfully recovered an onside kick and put the game in overtime as Derrick Steptoe scored from 1 yard out with no time left in regulation. The Beavers got the ball first in overtime and went up 21-14 on a 12-yard run by Quentin Steptoe. Weir scored on its possession on a Brandon Sperlazza-to-Justin Pernell pass but the PAT missed its mark, sending the hometown fans in Bluefield into wild celebration. It was wild wasn't it? wink.gif

Zac Cooper led Weir on the ground with 139 yards while Justin Smith added 101. Derrick Steptoe and David Perdue each ran for 51 yards for Bluefield.
