  1. There was a weird obsession in the region for naming teams after weather events while including a descriptive color: Marion Scarlet Hurricane, Richlands Blue Tornadoes (one of my favs), Grundy Golden Wave, Clintwood Green Wave. All of those are unique. Let’s not forget “Bearcats”, the old Garden Green Dragons…..always wondered why there weren’t more teams names after the coal industry “miners”…prospectors, etc. There were a few years that Grundy resembled Notre Dame…looked sharp. Union’s colors are worlds better that Appalachia and PV. Graham has a classic helmet and name. I’m a fan of Ridgeview’s Gray on gray
  2. If you see two safeties or a bracket over #7 then, in fact, they changed their defense for one player. I don’t think the DC is too prideful to gameplan for an offense. This isn’t the same as Atkins…who is a RB. If you want to defend a 4/5 wide true spread, you absolutely have to make adjustments.
  3. There are a lot of unique uniforms and names in SWVA football. Try to take off those team colored glasses and list your favorites. It can be an alternate uniform as they really are becoming more common. So let’s hear the following: 1) Favorite team Name (Ex: Graham Gmen or JI Burton Raiders 2) Favorite Helmet (Ex:VA High) 3) Favorite Uniform (Ex: Richlands Home: Blue on White) Heck, attach pics if you can.
  4. If I’m RV, I’d test the Bunch and Jenkins kids in short and intermediate routes…..they’ll be sitting in the deep ball…which pulls them out of the box. They are good athletes but not true DBs. Double moves, combo routes….make them play positional technique…Can they flip those hips and be fluid. It isn’t the easiest thing to cover someone who runs crisp routes and is a “true” WR like #7 and #5 for RV. If RV’s line holds up…there will be mismatches as they also use #13 as a WR and he is very capable and has good ball skills. Hopefully weather doesn’t play a factor and we have an exciting game. If this was at RV…on turf and dry, I’d go RV all day……but at Bullitt with rain…..not so sure…seems like it favors Unions rushing attack. Probably decided by turnovers.
  5. I actually don’t think RV throws enough TBH. I’d throw 18-22 times a game or roughly 40%. I disagree on them throwing short routes…..they love Beavers on the fade and run Counts up the seam as well. I’ve always said a modern read based passing game would be hard to defend in SWVA …if you can get some athletes. There are no dominant DE’s or CB’s here. Will be interesting to see RV develop their QB and passing attack going forward.
  6. Does Union run two high safeties? If they don’t and they bracket Beavers how do they defend trips to other side? Do they replace a LB/DL for another S? Or do they put their best guy out there in single coverage? It’s in Union’s DNA to want to stop the run. Tough decisions for the DC.
  7. Not a bad decision and allows them to safely play ball at the JV level and focus on going forward. I hate it for the upper classmen though.
  8. That’s his uncle. I’ve heard he was hard to go against….think his dad played at Emory for a bit. Younger kid is a different type of player….more skilled and different body type. Weather looks to benefit Union.
  9. The irony is his Dad and uncle played for Richlands back in the day.
