  1. It's happening in SWVA too. Softball player leaves a school to play for her travel ball coach, other local teams have transfers on them as well. Russell County has had swaps in various sports for a few years now too. If the family decides to move their kid that's their business. Loyalty in sports is gone in all levels.

Rye Cove and Twin Springs would be a nice thing for them if they could stand each other!

If Powell Valley and Appalachia can do it, I feel that they could too. Big question is, who would get the head coaching positions of each sport?

For Union fans...what about Powell Valley and Appalachia.  Thomas and Julius have to be top of the list for PV.  Tucker at fullback in the early 90's...lot of good ones there.  I am not as familiar with Appalachia.  I recall Chris Mabe, I think.

Matt Stidham was the best fullback at PV and Robbie Fox would be the next.

Nice Bearsfan!  If I'm not mistaken, was that the year Central had a big ole Left Hander that could sling it pretty good?  I may be getting mixed up with the mid 80's and some of the earlier PV-Lunenburg battles, but they had a dynamic kid at QB a couple years at Central.  Years have past and I can't remember his name.  My dad use to hunt with Chippy Chappell, Glynn Carlock, Nick Colobro and those guys.  Chippy Chappell, the former Lunenburg coach had ties to Bluefield, VA.  Powell Valley was just to nasty up front for those teams back then, and they had the discipline and athleticism to go with it (and that's even before the Jones brothers).

He was a right hander and  a really good QB. It was an outstanding football game for sure!

Makes no sense.  You have to either go through Tazewell or WV to get there

Look for Virginia in the next 10 years to start consolidating by county.  Literally, consolidating counties regarding education.  That's often the most efficient and West Virginia, once again, the state that is supposed to be so backwards was ahead of a huge chunk of the country with their County-Education Consolidation stuff years ago.  It's the way to go when you have a mass of rural counties/rural areas.  You could see something outside the box like...

    Graham-Bland consolidated

    Tazewell-Richlands consolidated

I agree. I think that Scott and Russell counties will consolidate. I also believe Wise and Lee will consolidate one more time. I'm guessing two high schools in Wise county, one in Lee, Scott, and Russell. I could very well be wrong ,but I do think the state will  step in and do something in 10-15yrs. Interesting to think about.

I believe this is a trend that will continue.  Schools will allow their teams just quit because they can not win.  I believe you will see more forfeits during the 1st round of playoffs this year.  I still think it's absurd to play a 1/8 and 2/7 game.  I just can't believe anyone makes any money from those games.

Agree, the trend was set last year. Hang it up, and play a JV season with varsity players. What message are you sending to your players, school, and community?

RC was D2 for 2 years due to Castlewoods numbers went from the biggest school in the district to the 3rd biggest mysteriously. RC had an enrollment of like 192.  The 05 team I think it was got royally screwed by this setup.  They had a chance to win the state in D1 but drew PV in the opening round of D2.  Lost 35-6 after being down 7-6 with a minute to go in the 3rd quarter.

That was in 04 and PV lost to Manassas Park in the Div 2 finals. Franklin won the Div 1 title and was the best team in Harrisonburg that day including, PV and Manassas Park. No chance RC beats Franklin that day.

The county seat , new field that cost at least 4-5 million but was described as 2 million donation ????? ROTC started at Powell Valley but moved to Central, weight lifting equipment donated by TJones and J Jones stolen and moved to Central , new baseball facilities at Central , new tennis courts and swim team and future swimming pool moved to Central all the while nothing given to Eastside or Union???? I guess that’s what happens when the lawyers and republican leaders kids go there. Yet only the girls bring home the state titles

I assure you, T and J jones never donated any weight equipment to Powell Valley or Union.

The miracle FG against Jefferson Forrest (with Anthony Poindexter) was the loudest I ever heard Legion Field. The 97 team was struggling running the ball at the end of the season until a meeting between Colobro, Houseright and Gilbert Smith and they moved Andy Smith to Fullback and put Jake Houseright in the I formation and the rest was history.

Poindexter graduated in 94 he wasn't on that JF team.
