the head coach is weightlifting coach by title only.....his assistant who followed him from PC (Anders?) is actually providing the instruction, not sure what HC is doing?
This last couple of years teams the Super touted as being the best to come thru GC. Very sub par to clueless on offense. As far as the money goes wasnt one of the reasons GC petitoned to play down was financial hardship? Paying your coach 90 plus and installing a turf field? Most A/AA schools wish they had type of harship?
I really like #6 for Galax....not very big but tough and plays hard. He will need 10-12 touches. Also Galax will need to get more from QB...he will need to be able to pull the ball and run 4-5 times a game to open things up? They will be very solid on defense and in the kicking game.
Galax will need to be super disciplined and play error free football Sat. This is not a great Essex team but they have a number of defenders who can tackle #9 and & #7 for Galax which is something Region C/D teams have struggled with. That being said I really like how Galax is playing right now and feel they are confident in what they do. #7 has been dominate the past several weeks on both sides.
Congrats to Coach Allen on job well done under difficult circumstances. Grayson was a mess offensively...... IMO very poorly coached on that side of ball. Had 12 weeks to come up with a offensive scheme with the best skill in region and relied on random big plays and special team scores.
I am still picking Grayson to represent the West based on their defense, they are very difficult to score on especially inside the 20. The impact the Def Coord of previous 2 year is big. On the offensive side they are simply poorly coached. The have multiple playmakers....1,2,3,6,10 who can score at anytime. It is certainly not for lack of coaches, they have a sideline full.
Grayson has not played to their ability but they are still more athletic than anyone else in the West IMOP. Their defense will carry them again and while offense will score 28
I still believe Grayson has a good shot at winning the Region and moving on just based on their sheer athleticism. Two areas need massive improvement the O-line play and overall discipline. Way too many penalties and alot of showboating..
The Grayson Co. AD is the schools Twitter monitor, nothing more. He got the job soon after his Dad was elected to the school board. The Superintendent alone makes every decision regarding athletics etc.
Grayson Superintendent is active in seeking transfers....those you mentioned above and several others. Graysons baseball for years siphoned off Galax and Carroll talent.
Denver Brown.....his brother ? Johnson played reciever I believe. Hawks kid who played on LOS. You mentioned 4 I just added 3 more. There are several others. At the 1A level 1 player can make a huge difference. I think we would both agree Spurlin as 4 year starter had tremendous impact in many areas. Add this with the presence of an excellent coach and translates into success. Current staff has done really good job but Dixon's departure is also starting to be felt.
Marshall Doss former E/H and Ferrum Def Coord would be good hire. He has had huge impact at Grayson . He is making good money at Grayson Co so not sure Chilhowie could pry him away?
Solid list provided by Sixcat regarding Galax........I would have Spurlin at the top for all 4 years contribution. I would also have J. Dixon and in the same line as Pack , Frankie Shalabi(sp) who was a great defender, blocker and caught some timely passes from FB/TE position.
Grayson claiming hardship while preparing to intall @ 1 million turf field and spending tens of thousands of doillars on football and hiring and finding jobs for 3-4 additional coaches is somewhat odd. Super has taken care of the school board and they will take care of him. He saw athletes coming and made sure they would be 1 A. Also saw opportunity with Dixon's leaving,
GW does not in any way have an athletic advantage.....I said before that this is the best run of athletes Grayson has had in 15 years. This was prior to some new arrivals via tranfer. They will be a top tier program in 1A for awhile. The Super has assembled a strong staff and has poured a ton of money into program. The Def Coord is the best around IMO.

Can Eastside or Chilhowie challenge Auburn in the West?
