  1. he's probably gonna say the SWD went 0-4.
  2. man, i got my 7 bucks worth tonight. bassett wins by 2 on a 3 at the buzzer in double OT. salem had a chance at the end of regulation and multiple chances at the end of the first OT. it was physical out there. even one of the referees took a serious lick.
  3. bburg did smack martinsville in the mouth in the northside christmas tournament. but in that case, bburg came out hot and mhs just laid down. no doubt blacksburg is the better team this year, but i wouldn't expect that outcome on most nights. the swd #4 is no easy road for one reason...they have to travel to the doghouse. this is by far not one of mhs's best teams (understatement), but in those tight quarters with 13 state title banners overlooking you, you may as well spot the home team 10 points before the ball is even tossed up.
  4. i forgot to remember the exact score for ya tonight, but martinsville beat tunstall by 7 or 8. bassett was up by 12 or so on magna vista midway through the 4th in the finals.
  5. andrew miller plays on both lines. he's 6'4 and probably in the 260-270 lb range. he was the region iv hwt wrestling champion as a sophomore this past year. bassett also has a 6'7 300 lb and a 6' 300+ lb lineman returning. boo woods returns at qb...and justin woods is a 6'1" 244 fullback and linebacker. 3 of those 5 (including miller) will be juniors.
  6. [ QUOTE ] Is this the year that Region IV beats Region III in the state quarterfinals? Predictions? Martinsville at Blacksburg Cave Spring at Abingdon [/ QUOTE ] nah, won't happen...but your question is a bit misleading. it HAS happened before.
  7. over on vapreps someone reported that abingdon won 2-1 i think in 2 ots after bassett was winning 1-0 fairly late in regulation. and martinsville scored early in their 13 minute game against marion with a long free kick...said the bulldogs won 2-1.
  8. here's a post from another board.... Martinsville beat Graham with a score of 4-1. #10 had the goal from Graham. Ian Loganodan had the first goal for the bulldogs. Josh Torrez had 2 goals , both assisted by Justin Wooldridge. Justin Wooldridge had a goal off a corner. The bulldogs controlled a large majority of the possession and had 5 balls shake the frame.
  9. [ QUOTE ] Tell what it means in english please. That does it I am going to take a spanish class next year. [/ QUOTE ] let's just say this....since you're the moderator, that post should be erased because it's riddled with profanity.
  10. i didn't catch much of that game, but the fact that the one or two mhs players that usually post on vapreps.com haven't posted the score yet....that's not a great sign for the home team... the game started around 730-745...the girls game ran a bit late
  11. graham...no offese to them and/or my alma mater (martinsville), but if that's the best region iv has to offer in girls soccer this year, they may as well give it up.
  12. m'ville's girls lost 3-2...but i don't know the boys score. it's like they just gave away goals...girl's soccer is tough to watch.
  13. while i realize they didn't win it last year and they may not win it again this year...the above post (by the cchssoccerlegend) can be taken further by saying since the piedmont joined region 4 back around 1994, martinsville has won at least 6 or 7 region titles (maybe more) in those 13 or so years.
  14. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Thats funny....Martinsville will be the region finalist....if you had actually watched one of their games you would know that....Martinsville is actually chasing the mark set by our 2003-2004 team for wins in a season...might make it to the regional finals what a joke [/ QUOTE ] Why is Martinsville so confident they can make it to the region finals? [/ QUOTE ] a better question is why does one person stating it on a messageboard make you think that Martinsville (the coaches and the players) feel "so confident they can make it to the region finals"?
  15. i would've figured the 1994 team had the most wins in a season since they made it all the way to the state finals. i guess maybe they play more games in the regular season now than they did back then though.
  16. great to hear. most people reading this forum may say "big deal", but the baseball program at mhs has been absolutely abysmal for a dozen years or more. Zero or maybe 1 or 2 win seasons had become the norm. hopefully things are slowly turning around...the results are getting better. they played well and kept it fairly close against a very good patrick county team, then beat carlisle and now mvhs.
  17. Late surge fuels Dawgs Sunday, April 29, 2007 By ANDREW STEVENS - Bulletin Sports Writer Martinsville continued its pursuit of a perfect Piedmont District regular season record with a 2-0 win at Magna Vista on Friday night. The Bulldogs (10-1, 6-0 Piedmont) had to overcome a bit of disappointment after being shut out in the first half, while having a couple of golden scoring opportunities go by the wayside. A brief moment of celebration turned to disbelief for Martinsville when Justin Wooldridge’s goal on an indirect kick in the 16th minute was waived off. Had another Martinsville player, along with Wooldridge, touched the ball before it went in the goal, it would have stood. A second chance to take an early lead slipped through the Bulldogs’ hands in the first half when Warriors keeper Zack Smith got caught out off position and was actually on the ground out of the goal. However, Martinsville was unable to capitalize and Smith survived a dicey situation. “It would have been great to get a goal before the half,†Scouras said. “We talked about it at the half, and the guys were a little frustrated because we had some chances on the frame.†That frustration apparently served as the Dawgs’ motivation after intermission. As Garrett Vaughan raced toward the goal with the ball at his feet, Smith charged off his line and was unable to come away with the ball. Instead, Vaughan fired the ball into the back of the net and sent with it a half’s worth of irritation in the 46th minute. Will Mahoney padded the Martinsville lead in the 64th minute, as he  like Vaughan  was able to get past Smith, who had come out after the ball. Less than a minute before Mahoney scored, Smith was down on the field after getting tangled up with a pair of Martinsville players as they struggled for a loose ball. Smith was a difference maker for the Warriors (3-5-1, 1-4-1 PD), making several point-blank saves that took away what appeared to be certain Bulldogs goals. Smith left the game briefly after Mahoney’s goal but the first-year starter returned moments later, determined to finish out the contest. “Zack did an awesome job,†Warriors head coack Mike Portlock said. “He has to play a physical game. He’s played off-and-on like that, but tonight he played the whole game like that.†Magna Vista threatend late in the second half, but the Warriors were never able to crack the Bulldogs’ defense. Martinsville keeper Will Reynolds finished with four saves. Despite coming up short against the district’s top dog, Portlock couldn’t have been happier with his team’s effort. “This is the first time in three or four games that we’ve played as a team,†Portlock said. “We’re tired of it. We’re tired of getting pushed around; we’re tired of losing, and we pushed back. This is a good way of starting the second half of the season.†Magna Vista will travel to Patrick County on Tuesday and Martinsville will host Dan River. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Story by Bulletin Sports Writer Andrew Stevens Martinsville 2 Magna Vista 0 Second Half M  Vaughan; 46:19 M  Mahoney; 64:45
  18. Best seat in the house Bulldogs' keeper on track to make program history Martinsville sophomore goalkeeper Will Reynolds warms up before Tuesday's game with Patrick County at Dan Greene Stadium. Reynolds is on track to be the first four-year starter in net in the history of the Bulldog program. Friday, April 27, 2007 By ADAM REGAN - Bulletin Sports Writer While Martinsville fans enjoy their cozy seats on the concrete steps of Dan Greene Stadium, they can only imagine what it would be like to watch their beloved Bulldogs boys soccer team from the best seat in the house. That spot is reserved for one person for both home and away games. It is so close to the action that its inhabitant becomes part of the action every now and then. Sophomore Will Reynolds has a front-row seat  or standing area to be clear  for the Piedmont District’s greatest show on grass. One could suppose that watching the 9-1 Bulldogs dominate opponents from not too far of a distance is one of the perks of being Martinsville’s goalkeeper. “It’s great,†Reynolds said of being a part of the district-leading Bulldogs. “The last couple years, we’ve struggled with team chemistry, and now we’re looking to break the school record (for wins in a season).†Reynolds is the easiest player to spot on the field. Decked out in a royal blue keeper jersey, which stands out among the rest of the team’s red and white uniforms, he is frequently alone on one side of the field while his teammates assault their opponents’ goal. The two-year starter spent Tuesday night observing his teammates abuse Patrick County with a 10-goal tour de force. Meanwhile, Reynolds passed the time by jumping around and walking up the field to get a closer look at his team’s dominance. “I try to stay focused while I’m out there,†Reynolds said. “I try and stay warm so if (shots) do come, I don’t mess up.†Patrick County tested him just twice. His teammates frequently lose track of him while they are embedded within an opponent’s attack zone, but they can only guess at how he spends his time. “I don’t look at him back there,†senior captain Josh Torrez said. “He could probably build something back there, but he probably watches the game.†In fact, Torrez is positive that Reynolds keeps attune with the game even when he isn’t involved. If the ball should pass midfield on occasion, the rest of the team will hear his barks of direction. Reynolds makes his defense aware of a cutter coming to the goal or an opposing forward who has found space. “He’s like a third coach out there,†Torrez said. “He always tells us what’s happening.†Reynolds’ prowess on the field has yielded the Bulldogs eight shutouts, including shutouts of all five district teams, this season and an eight-game winning streak, which they hope to improve upon today at Magna Vista. His job may seem like a cushy one to the casual fan, but his work behind the scenes has separated him from any keeper Pete Scouras has coached in his 19 years on the job. Reynolds is on track to be the first four-year starter in net in the history of the Martinsville program. “He wants to be worked hard in practice,†Scouras said. “We do extra drills and take extra shots on him.†Assistant coach Wes Lewis, who works closely with Reynolds, appreciates that the keeper knows his weaknesses and wants to improve. “The good thing about him is that he tells you what he wants to improve on,†Lewis said. “He’ll tell you, ‘Coach, last game I was uncomfortable with this. Can we work on it?’†Reynolds takes time out of his self-improvement routine in practice to get on his teammates. In a normal environment, a sophomore asking older teammates to focus wouldn’t generate a favorable response. On the other hand, the keeper has earned the respect of his teammates. He characterizes himself as the team’s “dad†in that he can be demanding at times and still have the ability to calm players down and help them relax. The results speak for themselves as Reynolds congratulated his teammates after each one of their goals on Tuesday. Occasionally, a look of boredom will become apparent on the sophomore’s face, but that is nothing a sudden shot on goal can’t cure. “Sometimes I have to track back really fast,†Reynolds said of unexpected defensive situations. “I get cold and then I have to do something. It can be really suprising. That’s when I tend to mess up.†Mistakes haven’t arisen too often this year, though, as Reynolds has given up just two goals in 10 games. The shots, however, will be coming at a faster pace if Martinsville makes the postseason, according Scouras. “I guarantee (we’ll need him),†Scouras said. “He’ll be vital if we get there.†Scouras is enamored with the idea that he has Reynolds for another two years. His success, combined with a potent offense, could keep Martinsville in the hunt for a state championship for years to come. “It’s great luxury to have him for two more years,†Scouras said. “With just being a sophomore and all the shutouts, the sky is the limit with Will.â€Â
  19. Dawgs pull out to early lead, then put it away in second half Wednesday, April 25, 2007 By ADAM REGAN - Bulletin Sports Writer When the rest of the Piedmont District teams evaluate the first half of their district schedule, they will all share at least one common bond. They each were shut out by Martinsville. The Bulldogs (9-1, 5-0 PD) capped their first go-around through the district with a 10-0 win over Patrick County (1-9-1, 1-3-1 PD) on Tuesday at Dan Greene Stadium. With the win, they extended their winning streak to seven games and notched their eighth shutout of the year. A clean run through district competition and just two goals against clearly establishes the Bulldogs as the team to beat. On the other hand, coach Pete Scouras contends that his team is still not content with their standing. “We need to keep focused mentally and keep improving,†he said. “They have been working hard and doing the job to get to this point.†With a 6-0 halftime lead, Scouras’ club showed that it was still hungry for goals  a trait that will be useful if it plans on success in the coming postseason. Senior midfielder Garrett Vaughan followed his first-half goal with two scores within 1 minute, 37 seconds of each other to complete the hat trick. Then in the 49th minute Scouras sent in most of his reserves, who continued to dominate the Cougar defense. The Bulldogs connected on a sizzling 62 percent of their 16 shots on goal. Senior forward Scott Wenkstern scored from outside the 18-yard box in the 60th minute while Andrew Dionne posted his second goal of the game in the 64th minute. “At halftime, we went out pretending that we were trailing by two goals,†senior captain Josh Torrez said. The midfielder nabbed his two scores on a penalty kick and a blazing shot from point-blank range in the first half. He said the team isn’t in need of a humbling experience because of the work that is done by his teammates each day behind closed doors. “We are working a lot in practice,†Torrez said. “We are finally beginning to gel as a team.†No part of the contest was taken lightly, according to Scouras. His players have found a flow to their offense, with each player executing crisp passes and getting rid of the ball at the appropriate time. “If we get to the postseason, all this will matter,†Scouras said. “The time we spend on the field leading up to that is invaluable to our starters and reserves.†Midfielder Will Mahoney tabbed the game-winner in the 9th minute following two shots that were saved by Cougar keeper Jamie Massey. The senior hit the crossbar from a few yards out on his first attempt and Massey performed a kick save on the second, only to have Mahoney head the third into the net. Junior Ben Utley also beat Massey in the 38th minute. Patrick County suffered a let down after winning their first game of the season Friday, 7-0 over Dan River. 20. it's just a poll (and it's not even an AP or coaches poll) so i'd say it's no big deal either way. however, wins over john battle, george wythe, richlands, tazewell...those wins certainly don't equal teams like gw danville, franklin county, halifax, bassett...abingdon may indeed be the better team (i suppose we'll see in a few weeks), but let's not twist reality.
  21. schedule would definitely play a part along with the fact that dogs are doing pretty well so far. but i'd say more of it might be b/c most folks out of the area don't know much about the current teams and will tend to vote with past history and name recognition playing heavily in their mind. since the piedmont left region iii and joined region iv circa 1994, martinsville has been the region champ probably 7 or 8 times. just a thought.
  22. Dawgs earn shutout against rival Bengals Wednesday, April 18, 2007 By ADAM REGAN - Bulletin Sports Writer Speed doesn’t always kill. At least not if the Martinsville Bulldogs have anything to say about it. The Bulldogs (6-1, 2-0 Piedmont) proved the saying isn’t always on point as their emphasis on possession trumped Bassett’s speed and finesse game in a 2-0 shutout Tuesday at Ed Bassett Stadium. Pete Scouras found the remedy to stopping Bassett’s potent offensive tandem of Daniel Maldonado and Fernando Gonzalez. At the same time, his team took advantage of their opportunities on their offensive attacks. The Martinsville coach had defender Scott Wenkstern alternate between marking Maldonado and Gonzalez. There were few times when the tandem saw daylight to unload on sophomore goalkeeper Will Reynolds. “He likes to switch (Maldonado and Gonzalez) between forward and midfield,†Scouras said of Bassett head coach Joe Favero. “Scott did a good job on them as did Justin (Wooldridge).†Martinsville’s front line and midfield overpowered Bassett’s smaller, quicker players. The physical game was highlighted by a host of Bengal players becoming acquainted with the grass. “We may have been too aggressive at times,†said Wooldridge, whose team was issued six yellow cards. “We did what we had to do to control the ball.†Scouras believed the officials “did what they had to do to control the game.†“It’s just Martinsville/Bassett,†he said, giving a reason for the cards. The Bulldogs also held up their end of the bargain on the offensive side. Midfielder Will Mahoney’s rebound of Ian Loganadan’s shot from 8 yards out in the 35th minute proved to be the game-winner. Bassett goalkeeper Tremayne Via, who saved seven shots, dove for Loganadan’s chip that sailed wide to the right of the goal, but was unable to get a hand on Mahoney’s tap from the ground. Scouras was still uneasy, however, as the first half wound down  and rightfully so, as a Bassett corner hit the crossbar right before halftime. “You can never feel comfortable with their scorers out on the field,†Scouras said. “We needed another goal so we could keep with our game plan.†Sophomore Cody Draper answered his coach’s demand in the 58th minute. Via was unable to secure the sophomore’s first shot, and the rebound found its way into the back of the net. The Bengals put five shots on goal, which were all gobbled up by Reynolds. “We weren’t able to put any shots on frame tonight,†Bassett head coach Joe Favero said. “That’s how soccer works. They put some shots on frame and their goalie made some good saves.†Bassett (4-5, 2-1) will get a second crack at their rivals on May 4 at Dan Greene Stadium. “We’re focused on Magna Vista right now,†Favero said of his Friday match-up. “But hopefully we’ll be in good shape when we play (Martinsville next).†Notes: Senior captain Josh Torrez was issued a soft red card after receiving his second yellow card. The card designation as “soft,†however, will allow him to play Thursday at home against Tunstall. ...Midfielder Garrett Vaughan continues to play with a bruised toe.
