  1. Oh yeah, we may never see another Thomas Jones in our area. The Pinkston boys are very good athletes, but I think the comparison needs to stop. Maybe if we actually see it, then maybe we can talk about it. Thomas and Julius were absolutely AWESOME. As far as high school goes, I give the edge to Thomas over Julius.
  2. Yeah, I finally found out this past Friday. I was told that he would not be allowed to participate in any sports at all. Actually I'd like to see either Kenny Burke or Gil Lusk at QB if Mitchell's not playing. Delmas Lawson I think would be okay at QB, but I think he needs to be left where he has been (I guess one would say "ALL OVER THE FIELD"). HUGE PLAYMAKER, He's a great athlete, but give one of the other kids a shot first, then go from there. Also, knowing Coach Robbins he probably will have some strings pulled to have Mitchell on the field. Don't know if it will be by the Richlands game or not, but I'm sure he'll be trying to get it done.
  3. I hadn't heard that either. Being from Big Stone Gap, this is the first I've heard of that. And this being a football town I'm sure it would have already been talked about through the entire community. But this is news to me. Can you fill us in on what you may have heard????? Thanks. POWELL VALLEY FOOTBALL State Champs 82'85'89'90'94'95'97'98' State Runner Up 04'
  4. PV is returning several key players. Especially in the backfield. Their QB Cedric Mitchell will be a senior and is very Michael Vickish. Has a great arm (Southpaw) and can scramble very very well. He took over as a sophomore after the graduation of Brad Robbins. I'm thinking he has thrown over 2,000 yards his sophomore and junior seasons and has also rushed for over 700 for both seasons as well. The Lusk kid will be okay after Mitchell graduates, but Kenny Burke which I'm thinking will be a sophomore, from what alot of us from Big Stone Gap has seen in him is much better than Lusk. If Dewey's boy gets the position it will be all politics. And yes the Pinkston brothers will be a sight to see next season. Malcolm will be a junior and Myron will be a sophomore. Malcolm has alot of speed and agility and Myron is a very straight up bullish runner. He looks very promising after watching him run the ball his freshman year. At Bullitt Park 2 seasons ago I think everyone in attendance was in AWE when they witnessed Malcolm (then a freshman) chasing down Tyler Parks from Gate City and taking him down at the 1 or 2 yard line. The Parks kid only had about a 25 yard lead and Malcolm just about had to come all the way across the field. The Gate City fans thought they had speed in their #20 until they saw what had just happened. GC's Parks is quick as a cat, but it's no comparison to Malcolm. I don't think I heard any of them (GC fans) cheering despite the fact Parks was a yard shy of a TD. Hopefully the Pinkston brothers will keep their heads on straight and not get into any type of trouble. But overall their best athlete on the field is Delmas Lawson (All-State). He will be a senior and can play anywhere on the field. He plays wide receiver, but saw time at tailback last year as well. And actually started and played QB the entire game against Clintwood during the regular season when Mitchell had to sit out. I believe he could play on the line if they needed him to. Well anyway, enough rambling on just wanted to put my 2cents in. I'm looking forward to this matchup.
  5. I was told by a very reliable source that is a coach at Gate City that it will most likely be Sullivan Central and that Coach Colobro has put in a referral for Darren Reed (defensive coordinator at GC) to be the next head coach when he decides to go. The Gate City community will be irate if Coach Reed gets it. There is more qualified personnel that is currently on the staff and everyone there knows it. All of this coming from the mouths of those in Gate City that I know. Alot of the players/kids don't have much respect for Reed from what I'm hearing. It may be a little of a downfall for GC if the kids decide not to play for Reed. I've seen that happen before where there are established programs. But you never know all of this may never happen and Coach Colobro may decide not to leave after all. Personally I'd like to see him stay at GC. I love to watch him and Phil Robbins of PV coach against one another. They are very similar in alot of ways.
  6. Just saw the official PV schedule and Richlands is game #3 and it will played at Bullitt Park in Big Stone Gap. Lebanon is game #2 also at Bullitt Park. PV's open date has been moved up about 3 weeks and Thomas Walker has filled the former Coeburn matchup, but it isn't game #9 like it was with Coeburn. Something didn't work out with John Battle filling that particular slot. So they settled with Tom Walker. Pound used to be the #4 game, but it is now #9 now I think.
  7. I'm hearing Richlands and Lebanon will be games 2 and 3 for PV or vice versa..... LEE has been a traditional first game of the year since 1989. I don't recall PV playing LEE other than the first game. And I really don't see LEE nor PV wanting to move the traditional "BATTLE OF THE BOOT" game. PV previously had Seymour, TN 2nd game and Breathitt County, KY 3rd game.
  8. Sounds like someone from Dickenson County. I suppose you don't care much about your kids welfare or the welfare of other kids. Which is notorious for that part of the region. Again, safety concerns (travel times) are bigger in this than anyone out there thinks. And also principals and coaches didn't have a say or vote on neutral sites back then. The VHSL and the VHSL only made neutral site decisions then. We are looking forward to playing Clintwood in Wise. See ya then Green Wave!!!!!
  9. Are you kidding, Bullitt Park (where Powell Valley plays) has one of the best fields in the entire region, class A and class AA. Great turf and has a good crown to it. So you can't say that a crappy field is the issue with Phil when PV always has a very good chance at being the #1 seed every year, which would put them on their home field for the regionals. I know that Phil is just pro-neutral site. Especially after having to travel 13 hours back in 1995 across the Chesapeake Bay. Not that it really mattered, with the outcome of the game. They won big anyway. But I think more and more principals and coaches are just beginning to consider how hard this can be on the kids and families. Also with less travel time, you are less likely to be in an accident of some sort. This is what they look at as well. We've got to remember that these kids are in their hands, which plays a big part in why. 4 to 5 hrs is better than 13.
  10. I'M NOT FOR SURE WHO WILL END UP #1 OR #2, BUT EITHER WAY THEY WILL BOTH PLAY AT HOME IN THE FIRST ROUND. THE SECOND ROUND WHICH WILL BE FOR THE REGION D TITLE WILL BE PLAYED AT UVA WISE THIS YEAR. BOTH DIVISION 2 AND DIVISION 1 REGIONAL TITLE GAMES WILL BE PLAYED AT UVA WISE THIS YEAR FOR A DOUBLE HEADER.
  11. I just took a look at the VHSL website and they have just updated the ratings. I could be looking at this wrong because the print was so small. But right now with an average of 15.6 it looks like PV is at #1. Honaker moves up to #2 with a 15.4 Haysi drops to #3 with a 15.3 Clintwood moves up to #4 with a 14.0 Gate City is out to I think it was a 12.9 and with them facing Appalachia and JI Burton it may be very difficult for them to get back in.
  12. Yes, it's a done deal with PV and Richlands. PV is also picking up Lebanon. The Breathitt Co, KY game was a four year deal and the Seymour, TN game was a two year deal. Been a pretty good while since the Viking and Blue Tornado squads have matched up against one another.
  13. Yes, I know all three are Region D. However, Rye Cove was placed in Division 2 (D2) in 2003 and 2004. Then they went back to Division 1 (D1) in 2005.
  14. Sorry about the comment I made about the 2003 Honaker missing out on the playoffs that year. I said that 2004 was the only year Rye Cove was in D2. With a little more research they were also there in 2003. MY BAD. The VHSL system is truly messed up. The 2003 Honaker team or Clintwood team definitely should have been in their before Rye Cove.
  15. Thanks for the clarification. Ya know how the papers can get things a little off and twisted.
  16. Out of all of the local papers I have read Richlands lost 16 starters, so it will interesting to see how they do. They also lost 17 starters from the 2004 team and look what they did in 2005. So it will be interesting to see how they fair.
  17. The Kingsport Times-News just came out with their preview this morning (8-18-06). They cover alot of the SWVa teams and NETn teams.
  18. 1. Powell Valley (PV should be in good shape for the next couple of seasons as well). 2. Graham (MUCH MUCH better than last season). 3. Richlands 4. George Wythe 5. Gate City
  19. They've got four. Everyone in the LPD (8 teams) has a state football title except for Coeburn and Pound. PV-8, Appy-6, Gate City-4, Clintwood-3, JI Burton-1 JJ Kelly-1, Coeburn-0, Pound-0.
  20. Bluefield Woodrow Wilson Mount View Oak Hill Liberty-Raleigh Richlands Radford George Wythe Lebanon James Monroe
  21. Correction on this one. PV (8) 82,85,89,90,94,95,97,98 Appy (6) 71,89,92,94,96,97 Gate City (4) 70,74,97,03 Clintwood (3) 74,75,78
  22. Howdyfans' predictions are the best and closest I have seen week in and week out on the message board this season. I'm going with PV like him as well, don't know if they will win as big as he says. You've been darn close every week Howdy, with the exception of one game. I will say PV-21 GC-13. Looking forward to seeing how your seedings in the playoffs in Division 2 and Division 1 turn out as well Mr. Howdy. And if your predicted State Champs will actually be the ones to take it all. WHAT'S YOUR SECRET?? OR DO YOU USE A FORMULA OF SOME KIND??
  23. Yeah, this kid has no idea!!!!! Hey Lance, did you say that the VHSL has changed the seedings for this year? How do you see the seedings for Region D, Division 2 this year. Just want your opinion on this.... Pretty sure that GC and PV will be there because of their points, but who else do you see? Honaker, Haysi, Clintwood, Rye Cove or Tom Walker? And who do you think will win the RC and Tom Walker game tomorrow night. That game will probably decide the Cumberland. Your thoughts.........
  24. I know that Gate City's Zach Jones is being looked at by Georgia and Va Tech. He definitely has the size, but Division 1 is a whole different level. All the lineman are huge! But I'd say if anyone in this area will excel in Division 1 it will probably be Zach. I may be wrong on this, but I do wish him well wherever he decides to go.
