E&H needs extra time to get by Ferrum
FERRUM - As if Caleb Jennings hadn't already done enough for the Emory & Henry football team entering the second overtime, the senior running back corralled an E&H fumble and dove into the end zone, securing a season-opening 23-17 Wasps victory over Ferrum College.
Jennings entered the game seventh on the Emory & Henry all-time rushing yardage list, and moved up to fifth with a 213-yard performance. He surpassed Wayne Neese (E&H '70) and Scotty Verran (E&H '90) in the all-time rankings and now sits at 2,819 career rushing yards.
Entering the second half with only 37 rushing yards, Jennings exploded to finish with 213 yards on 28 carries, and scored all three of E&H's touchdowns.
Quarterback Dustin Beck, in his first game starting, completed 14 of 27 passes (including each of his first six attempts) for 146 yards. Beck's favorite target in the game was Wide-out Preston Jennings, who caught seven passes for 63 yards.
Linebacker Devon Sproles led the E&H defense with 15 tackles, and C.J. Hodges and Daniel Preston chipped in nine stops apiece.
Jennings opened the scoring early in the fourth quarter, vaulting over the pile for a 1-yard touchdown. Ferrum responded with seven minutes to go, tying the game 7-7.
Sophomore Matt Turchin gave the Wasps a 10-7 advantage on 33-yard field goal with 42 seconds remaining, but the Panthers' Scott Puschell knocked home a 47-yarder with just two seconds remaining in regulation.
Emory & Henry took first possession in overtime and Jennings again found the end zone from 13 yards out, but Ferrum tied the game at 17 to force another stanza.
In the second OT period, E&H's defense came up big, forcing a missed field goal. Beck found Anthony Sims for a 24-yard completion on the Wasps' first play, spotting the ball at Ferrum's 1-yard line. On the ensuing play, Beck fumbled and Jennings recovered the ball while diving into the end zone.
Emory & Henry's win over the Panthers moves the all-time series to 17-9 in favor of the Wasps, and the only previous overtime match between the schools in 1997 ended with an Andrew Hockett field goal in the fourth extra period and a 13-10 E&H victory.
The Wasps travel to Greensboro College next Saturday.
