  1. Hope I didn't offend any of the above mentioned groups.
  2. It doesn't. It puts us against teams with the same problems we have.
  3. Your arguement would be partially true if there was only 1 weight class. In wrestling we have 14 weights. We can't always put our best 14 wrestlers out because sometimes 2 are at the same weight. Have you noticed Grundy Forfiet a weight class in the last few years? I will say it is harder to field a westling team with low enrollment than either of the other two sports. As for the wrestlers, it doesn't matter to them if they are wrestling 6A they will work hard(harder than any other sport 10 fold) and do their best. A sport is a sport. Athletes matter in all of them. You are foolish to think otherwise.
  4. Let me try to explain this one more time. You are right about it is 1 on 1. However, instead of having one wrestler who has no wrestle-off, no workout partners, and no in room competition the bigger schools have multiple wrestleoffs per weight, 4 to 5 partners in the room, and a lot of competition. Grundy is making putting out some good wrestlers. If they had been single A, (where they have belonged for years), many multiple time state champs instead of state place winners. Lets apply this to B-Ball. How many kids can Dunk the ball on our team vs some of the AAA teams? How many are over 6'4? Lets apply this to football. How many kids run 4.4 40 times? These are all related to the enrollment. I will put it out like this, in high school you have 50% girls. Of the 50% of the males You have over half who are geeks, dweebs, and not athletic. Now you have 20% of your schools enrollment to come up with a team. In Grundy's case this is about 80 kids. This takes care of all sports. Now lets look at Faquier. 2000 students, 1000 males, 400 Athletes. This is the point of dropping. There are some sports that do not get far enough at the state level to compete against the bigger schools, but this is fair to everyone.
  5. Tradition is in the past. New rivalries will form. Because we are in the BDD it doesn't take away from the old rivalries. As for the Schedule goes, I think they should have been playing the single A teams in the area all along. They are there and available. The problem comes when egos come into play. As for the wrestling, we still go out and beat some of the teams that we are 2 to 5 times underdogs. The differance is then we came back to a level playing field after the "training" against the top wrestlers in the country. In the past we didn't always win. Although, like with most Dynasties, the losses are forgotten after the Championship comes in. Now as for how this effects wrestling. In wrestling they have 14 weights. In single a most teams have about 10-20 wrestlers, most AA teams have 25-50 and most AAA have 40-80. Like in any sport the higher gene pool you have to choose from the higher the number of athletes. Instead of not having a 103 in a single A school, a triple a school may have 5. I hope you understand the effect. Finally, do you want to know how this group will do in Single A? I will tell you Everyone who qualified for state this year will be competeing for a title. 9 State finalists will be hard to beat.
  6. Lance and any of the other "traditionalists", First, The schedule thing is crap. The problem is it is easier to say I can't find someone than it is to look. In single A you will have more teams to choose from.( the teams they wouldn't play before) Second, the Golden Wave has not been competitive in the SWD in many years. It is easy to say I want it like it was when I was in school, but times change and enrollments decline. The days of the "Million Dollar Coalfields" are over and even John Norris is moved away. When you were in school Grundy could compete and now they don't. Third, The wrestling team will do fine. The problem I have is it should of happened around 10 years sooner. Fourth, realignment will not happen. Too many AAA schools make too much money. Now as for your questions, We do want to fill the "hole at the bottom of the sign". We will do better in Single A vs AA as we will be competeing with teams of comparable enrollments. 400 vs 200-800 is much more "fair" than 400 vs 800-2000. The rush to Single A is due to the fact the Children of buchanan county deserve to compete on a equal playing field instead of starting out between a 2 and 5 times underdog. The sooner we correct this injustice that is affecting our kids the better. We do not control the rest of the district teams. I think they should follow suit and all be single A.
  7. I think the full schedule arguement is crap. They will have to get new rivalries yes, but as for not being able to find someone to play, bull. I know the AA teams will not want to play them. However, there are many more single a teams west of Roanoke than AA. The only problem is someone has to open a book and call some people to set up a new schedule instead of just keeping what they had last year.
  8. I heard the school board voted and Grundy will be single a in 2010. It has been a long time coming.
  9. He wasn't in 7th grade it was before his freshmen year and the kid had just won Tulsa Nationals. Do not act like he was some average joe and then blossomed. All of the " transfer kids" are at least national level in middle school before transfering.
  10. We do not make excuses. Rife lost to Bowman in a good hard match. Congratulations to Blake Bowman he looked tough. Blake was Ranked 3rd in the state and Rife was ranked #1. I assume that Bowman will be the new #1 when the next rankings are released. This is a matchup that could be repeated 3 more times this season. The first one was at the Skeens Rife won 1-0 and the second was at a neutral site and Bowman won 10-6. All I can say is the fans are going to be in for a treat everytime these two meet.
  11. 1-14-09 Tazewell, Carroll Co, Grundy @ Richlands 1-21-09 Grundy, Richlands, Christiansburg @ Marion 1-28-09 Abingdon, Graham @ Grundy
  12. Could someone please post the proposed 5a and/or 6a system breakdown? or at least a link that has a school by school breakdown. Thank you in advance for any help you guys can provide.
  13. The results and team scores are posted to the Carroll County website and the Va Wrestling site in the AA Forum. I hope this helps. End of Day 1 Franklin County is in the lead by 1.5 points with 7 in Championships . Grundy is in second with 8 in championships. Looks like it is gonna be a close team race.
  14. Drew will break the graham guy in half. Wrestling is much differant than football. Drew is one of the top heavyweights in the state and country!
  15. 103 Dakota Vance 112 Sean Vandyke 119 Jeremy Hurley 125 Derek Anderson Channing Elswick 130 Cody Rife Joey Ratliff 135 Ethan Owens 140 Jon Dotson 145 Garland Cleek 152 Tyler McClanahan 160 Tyler Justus 171 Tanner McClanahan 189 Daniel Lowe 215 Donnie Ramey 285 Alex Edwards Dalton Cox
  16. http://www.baumspage.com/wr/ryle/res08.htm Jeremy Hurley and Jon Dotson Both beat NHSCA All Americans this weekend. The Ryle Rumble had the the top 4 teams in ky, 6 of the top 10, and 8 of the top 20. 49 wrestlers Ranked in the Ky State. Congratulations to all of the Golden Wave Team Great Job. You guys give Grundy something to be Proud of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. I watched the football game last night and I thought the kids looked good. I thought Cody Justus looked real good. He is talented and makes good decisions in game situations. All the running backs were running hard and Jonathan Kelley was real accurate. The interceptions , 2 by Justus and 2 by McClanahans, sparked the defense. Grundy is a young, up and coming team. And they are much improved.
  18. Who got in the endzone? It sounds like they are doing better. I know last year we were the last ranked team in AA Va. Glad to see the improvement!
  19. How did grundy do tonight? I didn't get to go.
  20. What I'm Hearing is there expanding the Airport to a Cargo Airport. The "Poplar Gar Project" will have 3 "factory" buildings, a planned community with housing for 3 differant income levels, the park, four lane road to the coal fields expressway, state of the art technology, and there is still room for the Buchanan County High School or Grundy if we aren't made to change the name. I expect in the next 5 years the School board will close Hurley, Twin Valley, and Council. They will also be closing Russell prater and J.M. Bevins. All the elementary kids will be bussed to Riverview and the High school kids will go to the Gap. I expect council kids will go to Haysi. The other two schools will probabally be closed in seperate years to keep the uproar to a minimum. This is the only way to keep enrollment up and costs down. I don't like the way it sounds, but I'm not in charge.
  21. With the declining enrollments of SWVA when do you guys think these schools will drop?
  22. It was a heck of a game. More rain than I ever saw. on a dry field ....... who knows
  23. In the Grundy that you keep refering to the coal buisness was booming and the housing wasn't filled by law school students. I agree that in the past it was a much better system. If you have 5 feeder schools and teams at each school more kids get to play, the 3rd and 4th teamers feel like they are quality. In a system "after consolidation" everyone is at the same school and less kids come out. Now the same "on the fence playing in the dirt" kid that was able to play a lot in the 80's is a 3rd or 4th teamer because all the teams are together. I'm talking about middle school. Now I know other teams have success with fewer kids. They have great coaching, good programs, and they compete against teams of similar enrollment. I didn't want this to turn into what the football program needs to change. I'm just gathering some info. The population of Buchanan County is down 75% since 1990.
  24. Enrollment has dropped 60% since 1998. The feeder system was removed last year when the eighth grade football was dropped. Little League football didn't end with Vansant. The little league had about 100 kids playing football last year. I heard the high school team had 15 kids counting eighth graders at the football meeting last week.
