  1. BEAMERBALL...I noticed you omitted the "county" beside of Lee High. I thought they used to be called the Lee County Generals (even though Tom Walker is in Lee Co. also) - In the case of Giles County, I think they just go by Giles, since Narrows High is there too, Grayson County has one other school (Mt. Rogers) but Mt. Rogers doesn't participate in secondary athletics except for maybe JV girls bball or something like that. The other cases would be Bland Co, which also contains Rocky Gap High (who combines with Bland for football and most other athletics). I think Bath, Craig, and Highland (even though they don't field a football team) keep the "county" in their official title. So what I'm getting at is do you actually drop the "County" for the school name if that is NOT the ONLY HS in that county who participates in sports?
  2. I've heard people talking about the Rye Cove rule before (but didn't know what it was). Do you have any idea when it was brought about? I know that Rye Cove is a small school, but slightly larger than some other Cumberland teams like St. Paul and Ervinton. So does that mean that Rye Cove (who has an enrollment of 255) was supposed to be a D2 school at some time in the past, but challenged the VHSL alignment breakdown?
  3. I copied these enrollment #s from the VHSL (Single A) alignment for 2009. According to the chart, region D is divided into two eleven school divisions, which makes sense given that there are 22 schools. The two smallest D2 schools are Clintwood & Haysi (Both D1 last season & both located in the same county). I thought I had heard something earlier in the year that these two schools could still compete as D1 even though they are listed as D2. (Does anyone know for sure how this could be, or are they both going to go D2 this year). 2009 VHSL Region D DIVISION II Lee Co. 712 Gate City 681 Virginia High 680 John S. Battle 655 Powell Valley 547 Lebanon 546 J. J. Kelly 473 Coeburn 404 Honaker 401 Clintwood 318 Haysi 283 DIVISION I Castlewood 279 Thomas Walker 279 Rye Cove 255 J. I. Burton 252 Pound 251 Twin Springs 244 Twin Valley 240 Appalachia 218 Hurley 201 Ervinton 172 Saint Paul 148
  4. I thought that was what the scenario would be, but I just wanted to make sure.
  5. ? about the new Region C Div. I & II football playoff format I understand that all Region C schools have secured an open date on Week 12 (the final week of the regular season) so that there can be opening round playoff games (since the format has expanded from 4 to 6 teams.) From what I would assume, the #1 & 2 teams get a bye that week while 6 travels to 3 and 5 @ 4 (that is the straight forward part). My question is who then would play at the #1 seed the following week if there were any upsets? Is the #1 locked in to play the winner of 4 & 5 reguardless of what happens in the 3 & 6 game, or if the #6 wins at the #3 then would #1 host #6 since they are the lower remaining seed?
  6. Attn Hokie Fans: Anyone heard about when the VA Tech preseason kickoff will be? This event is usually sponsored by Outback Steakhouse and occurrs on either the third or fourth Sunday afternoon in August. (hokiesports.com) is where this info has been posted the last several years, but I can't find anything on the event this season. They usually have the info up the 1st week of July, but currently nothing has been posted. Meet the Hokies is where coach Beamer introduces the Freshmen class for 2009-10 at either Cassell Coliseum or LN Stadium and is sponsored by the Blacksburg Hokie Club. If anyone has any idea of the date and time for this event, (or if they are still planning to have it or not) please post on this board.
  7. This story is a little bit too strange., but what do I know about college recruiting. If it works...it works and even Florida, Georgia, and Bama fans will have to admit that Eric Berry is pretty good. After reading the article, I couldn't stop laughing at the last comment of where coaches will be looking for players in the future. Read it Here if you haven't already heard: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/sec/0-7-94/Commitment-from-a-13-year-old-is-absurd.html If UT gets a Heisman caliber athlete and his fraternal twin brother (who may be pretty good also) , watch out in 2014. WooHoo!!
  8. Any idea when the are going to post the top ten for Single A ? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the VHSL usually divides that poll into Div I and II.
  9. What I was referring to was the rumor about the new transfer students @ RHS and how the coaches were going to put on the thinking caps this summer to use the newfound (Speed).
  10. At the bottom of the report you mentioned Richlands still being one of the top teams in SWVA (as they traditionally have been) despite heavy graduation losses. I heard that the Lands had a few students recently transfer in, which will immediately bring the dimension of (SPEED) - and that the offense and the play calling was being completely rethought (away from Power I and other smashmouth formations) to one that will open up space and use the whole field to utilize the speed (not usually seen in this part of the state / compared to tidewater region) coming in. From what I heard, everyone else in the SW District better watch out for this dimension to be brought back even mulitiplied as Reflecting to the days of Jennings, Fuller, Ringstaff, etc.
  11. (Thanks for the Help UVAObserver) - that was some good information. From what your are saying though, it sounds like their could be a situation of rotating QB's: I.E. (Hokies using Ty Taylor & Sean Glennon). I think this could turn into a cluster if that is the case, but the competition will definitely make Hall and Sewell better players.
  12. QB or Not QB that is the Question about UVA Football: I keep hearing that the Hoos are looking to use Vic Hall and run the spread, but he is still listed as (SR) defensive player @ CB: http://www.virginiasports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=88799&SPID=10606&DB_OEM_ID=17800&ATCLID=1133512&Q_SEASON=2009 * What happened to Jameel Sewell @ QB for the Hoos? I knew that he was not eligible last season (poor academics I think), but I thought he would be able to return this fall with one year of eligibility. * Also curious about Hall's teammate from Gretna - Rico Reynolds... I thought he was the real deal @ tailback, and I remember him returning kicks his freshman season.
  13. Talking about UVA Football: Vic Hall is still listed as a defensive player @ CB: http://virginia.rivals.com/cviewplayer.asp?Player=51035 What happened to Jameel Sewell @ QB for the Hoos? I thought he was back with one year of eligibility.
  14. During the leadoff homerun in the bottom of the 5th for UVA they showed a view of the crowd with some supporters wearing VT Hokie shirts and cheering on the UVA hitter as he trotted around after the umpire ruled it a homerun. Hokies supporting Hoos...Good exposure for both institutions!!
  15. Curious if the VHSL was thinking about trying to reclassify Baseball & Softball to six divisions in order to align with football & basketball. Never understood why we have three state champs in one sport and six in the others.
  16. Lane Kiffin should have no problems recruiting anyone in the county. He should just send his wife. http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/120108aaa.html
  17. Is the game still @ CVC? According to VHSL.org it is listed as being @ Clintwood -- 1:30 kickoff.
  18. Greg Boone is a jr this year too. So he'll be back next season. Love to see that "WILD TURKEY" Formation when he takes the direct snap. It looks like the Single Wing...Coach Beamer might have been talking to Ragsdale @ Giles since he retired. Would like to see if Boone can also throw it 65+ yards like they say he can.
  19. Think $$$ is a factor in those county rivalries. That is a good GATE for the Trojans and Rebels when Abingdon pays a visit. As far as (Holston VS. Abingdon) -- who knows...maybe the AD's will get together in 2010 when they do the scheduling for the next two years. You never know who will be dropped and who will be picked up. *This might be a little tougher if the "5A" Classification goes in place and HHS stays @ DI and A-town goes to DIII. That would go against what the VHSL is trying to do in having schools with closer enrollments compete*
  20. Announced that UVA / VT kickoff is @ HIGH NOON on ESPN. Since the DI and DII games will probably start @ 1:30, we will have to get some updates during the High School playoffs in Floyd and Wise Counties. CONGRATS to (LEBANON, FLOYD, HOLSTON, AND CLINTWOOD) Definitely feel that SWVA will be represented well on DEC 6th @ SALEM. Also CONGRATS to RICHLANDS...They will represent DIII well. HOOS @ HOKIES It would be nice to see the Hokies beat their in-state rivals then get two games in sunny Florida. * ACC championship (Tampa) - rematch w/ Boston College or Florida St. WIN THAT AND GET THE... * Orange Bowl (Miami) - with Cincinnati (if they get past the 'Cuse)
  21. Holston's Junior Varsity team did beat Abingdon pretty soudly two years ago if that counts for anything. That JV team consisted almost entirely of the current Junior Class who were 9th graders then. I realize that was two years ago and that the central focus of JV athletics is concentrated on the development of fundamentals. Expect a good game...Saw Clintwood play earlier in the season and have to compliment their season. They have tremendous talent all over the field. Good Luck HHS CAVS @ Wise !!! Will be nice if they still have some posters left in place @ Carl Smith Stadium with that slogan (for the Highland Cavaliers)...
  22. 28-0 Floyd Co. up on the Warriors @ the half.
  23. Anderson (GCHS) and Helbert (LHS) each broke multiple tackles to rush for a TD. Both PAT(s) were no good. Score is tied 6 up @ the Half The Pioneers will receive to open the 3rd Quarter.
  24. Correction: I believe Chilhowie may have dropped Pound instead of Twin Springs to add Grayson Co. for next year. Also heard that Bath Co. dropped Riverheads to add Eastern Mont. Believe J.I. Burton picked up Abingdon too.
  25. Anyone know the changes in non-district football scheduling for their schools for next season? I have heard a few Hogo Conference changes (maybe not finalized yet)... Patrick Henry is dropping Honaker and Pound to add J.J. Kelly and Bland Co. Holston lost Castlewood, but picked up Haysi Chilhowie picked up Grayson Co. for Twin Springs
