Not sure about the middle school teams. Started travel ball last year. They have played Morristown and Lynn View so far this year and lost to both. The 12U team held good against both before tiring out in the 4th.

Numbers in LL are low. Three of the teams did not have enough to field the JV and Varsity teams for LL. Some of the kids played two games a night so there would be enough. Travel ball we have 3 teams. 8U, 10U, and 12U. In that order there are 12, 14, and 12 kids for each team. One of the 14 on the 10U team transferred over from the Lynn View team yesterday. If you want a look at the travel teams they will be at Gate City Saturday playing Johnson City. Start time should be around 10 or 11 am.

Can't speak for everyone but I don't dislike Abingdon. I pull some for them when not playing GC.

Interest in football isn't all that great right now and I'm not talking about high school alone. Our travel teams this year barley have enough to play. 8U has 12 kids, 10U 13 kids and 12U 12 kids. With the way football has evolved the Travel league is where these kids will learn to defend formations like the spread and defend the pass. Morristown's 10U team came out in the spread throwing deep against GC last Saturday. That little QB was as good as some high school qbs I have seen. We need more interest in this league and our little league and it will help at the HS level in the long run. The talent is at GC but not all are on the football team.

I got to see the weight room this year for the first time since the mid 90s. Definitely a shame where it is now.

Lee played Heritage in the 97 semis. I think you are talking about when Lee lost to Tabb 21-14 in the 1990 Championship game.

Sure did. The smallest school would have gave D4 fits and maybe could have won it.

That was a very good year for this area. Lee High made it to the D4 semis that year.

Too many unknowns here to be saying GC would do this or PV would do that. Just because a team beats another team in regular season don't mean they would do the same in the playoffs. Look at GC vs PV 2001 and 2007. GC vs Lebanon in 08 and 09. GC vs Union 2013. One thing that is for sure is both Gate City, and Powell Valley have great histories. A lot of pride and tradition for both.

Definitely not a good gauge unless you are talking about strictly 2000 to 2016. If going by 1970 to now I am putting Powell Valley, Appalachia, Gate City, Giles, and Clintwood in the top five spots.
