Graham coach Carlock diagnosed with rare illness

By BILL ARCHER

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD, Va. - The family of Coach Glynn Carlock, of one of the region's best known and beloved leaders in sports, education and developing young people to reach their full potential confirmed Friday that the 67-year-old head football coach of the Graham G-Men was diagnosed earlier this week with a rare disorder called Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease.

Carlock became disoriented in mid-July and went to the University of Virginia Medical Center for tests. He and his family returned home, but went back to UVA last weekend where physicians were able to diagnose CJD - a fatal brain disorder that affects about one person per million each year. The Akron, Ohio-based CJD Foundation said the Center for Disease Control revised that number in October of 2004 to about one in 9,000 CJD cases per year in the population group age 55 and older.

"Mom and I have talked it over, and we think it's important for people to have a better understanding of the disease," Glynn Carlock Jr., said Friday morning. "We both think that if it can help somebody, that's what dad would want."

The disease was first diagnosed in the early 1920s by two German neurologists - H.G. Creutzfeldt and A. Jakob - working independently. Since the disease is still very difficult to diagnose, the CJD Foundation works to increase public awareness of the disease.

"It is very courageous of the (Carlock) family to come forward to help people understand CJD," Florence Kranitz, executive director of the non-profit foundation said. "Quite often, families feel very isolated when they find out about CJD. Our mission is to provide support for families. We encourage the family or anyone who has questions to visit our web site www.cjdfoundation.org or call our toll-free support line, 800 659-1991."

Along with its support component, the foundation works with the medical community to help physicians understand more about the disease. "We try to help them understand how to talk to families," Kranitz said. "It's uncomfortable territory for many people."

Kranitz is not a physician. She started learning about the disease after losing her husband to CJD, and took over the foundation in 2002. As an infectious protein, CJD is classified as a prion disease and is related - but not the same thing - as a different disease called bovine spongiform encephalopathy, more commonly known as mad cow disease. Kranitz noted that the CJD variant that develops in some people who eat the meat of cattle infected by BSE usually occurs in people 30 years old and younger.

Carlock was transported from UVA to Westwood Medical Center in Bluefield, Va., late Thursday afternoon. "He's welcome to have friends come by and visit," Glynn Carlock Jr., said. "We don't think they should be there past 8:30 p.m., but it's OK to visit."

Glynn Jr., encouraged well-wishers to send get well cards to the family's residence at 1712 Whitethorn St. Ext, Bluefield, WV 24701. "We'll take them over to Westwood and read them to him," Carlock said.

Carlock started coaching at Graham in 1973. He coached at Bluefield High School for 10 years prior to that.

as a tribute to this fine man and mentor and coach and to his family i think that the city of bluefield va and bluefield need to consider the renaming of the field at mitchell stadium to the john chamara and glenn carlock field at mitchell stadium. this man has done a lot for area kids schools and the community.from the article i read he has helped the new semi pro team that has formed in bluefield wv also. not many people do things like that.so everyone in the area should send letters to the city asking for this in tribute to a fine man.

either would be a fitting tribute to this fine man i just think that everyone who has ever had contact with him and his family should call the city and ask that this be done to honor a man that has done so much for kids in this area.
