Red Devils' game result in question

RAVENSWOOD - It was a crazy Friday night here at Flinn Field as a battle of ranked Class AA foes turned into a suspended contest with No. 9 Ravenswood (2-1) leading visiting No. 7 Mount View, 14-6, with less than two minutes left in the first quarter.

The Golden Knights (2-0), who have refused to play the game today or at any future point, had travel problems from the start as their charter buses failed to show up in McDowell County. That problem was initially resolved with the start of the contest being moved back to 8 p.m.

Mount View's main starters and their top reserves, about two dozen players, made the trip in personal vehicles with either parents or coaches as the rest of the team and cheerleaders finally showed up just before kickoff on school buses.

The team's played until 1:31 was left showing on the clock when lightning forced the first suspension at 8:23 p.m. The tilt was delayed for more than an hour and after the officials allowed the squads back on the field, it was suspended again around 9:40 p.m. and finally brought to an official standstill at 10:10 p.m.

"We have a rule for that, but I don't have it in front of me," said West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Executive Director Mike Hayden late Friday night from his home.

"We'll have to take a look at it and see what the situation is and find out what's going on."

Hayden noted if the game had made it through the first half, both coaches could've agreed to call it at that point with the halftime score being the official final.

"It will be up to the SSAC to make the ruling and the determination," said Ravenswood head coach Dick Sturm. "Mount View said because of the distance and the expense involved they could not come back Saturday."

While that might be the case, the Golden Knights had paid more than a couple thousand dollars for the charter buses.

"We'll play anybody, anytime, anywhere," Sturm said. "But, they said it was economically and physically impossible to return on Saturday."

After Ravenswood won the toss and elected to receive, Mount View's Eric Smith picked off a Jared Varney pass and darted 34 yards to paydirt for a 6-0 lead just 20 seconds into the game.

However, Ravenwood answered with a pair of scoring drives while holding the Golden Knights to a three-and-out for the 14-6 lead. Kirk Ritchie had a 40-yard scoring scamper at the 8:08 mark while Thomas Nay bulled in from 2 yards out with 2:02 left in the first.
