Evidently, Virginia High learned from Marion’s foul-shooting woes.

After the Scarlet Hurricanes (4-13, 0-4) went a combined 7-of-16 in quarters two and three, the Bearcats (11-5, 2-2) canned 10-of-13 in the fourth to solidify their hold on the district’s third spot.

In fact, Virginia High’s foul-shooting efforts overshadowed an 0-for-10 effort from the field during the final eight minutes.

“Over the last two and a half minutes, we did a lot of things right,†said VHS coach Doug Mitchell, whose squad hit 8-of-11 from the charity stripe over the final 1:09. “We finished the game doing some pretty good things, especially with our kids hitting free throws.â€ÂÂ

Despite foul-line hiccups, Marion had two chances for a possible tie late. Down 47-44 with just under three minutes remaining, the ’Canes turned the ball over on consecutive possessions. Marion then needed nearly a minute to up its foul total into the penalty area.

From there, the ’Cats did the rest.

“That kills us ... because we played good defense and were much better on the boards this time,†said Marion coach Dan Duffield of his squad’s foul-shooting problems. “We did a lot of things right that we didn’t do the first time we played them.â€ÂÂ

A quartet of Bearcats – Daniel Triplett (13 points), C.J. Tillie (12 points, nine rebounds), Terrell Vereen (10 points) and Randy White (10 points) – all reached double figures, while Jordan Burrows and Tim Whisman each netted 16 points for the Scarlet Hurricanes.

BRISTOL, Va. – High school basketball doesn’t feature the ever-popular “make it, take it†playground rule.

It sure seemed part of the VHSL handbook Friday night.

Host Virginia High ripped off the game’s first 25 points, maintaining the Highlands District top spot with a definitive 72-15 victory over Marion.

Every Bearcat in uniform found the bottom of the net, especially Morgan Smith and Tonya Stallard. Smith nailed three 3-pointers en route to a game-high 15 points, while Stallard posted a career-best 14.

“It was a good night offensively for us,†VHS coach Barry Reed said. “We’re just trying to stay focused and play one game at a time. Then at the end of February, we can look back and see what we’ve accomplished.â€ÂÂ

The bar is now set for a crucial district showdown next Friday at second-place Lee. Though Virginia High (15-2, 4-0) still has Sullivan East and Tazewell before the Generals, neither the Patriots nor the Bulldogs play in the Highlands.

“We know that next week at Lee will be for the marbles,†said Reed. “We’re going to do the best we can. I hope we can get by (tonight) and Tuesday night before we leave, but we’re looking down the road at Lee next Friday night. That’s what we’re focused on right now.â€ÂÂ

Brittany Snavely had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Marion (0-17, 0-4).
