SPRINGVILLE, Va. — Two victims were air-lifted from the scene of a single-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 460 early Sunday morning, but additional information concerning their identities as well as their conditions was unknown Sunday afternoon.

Emergency responders were called to the scene of the accident near the Destiny Outreach Church at 3:22 a.m., according to Chief Jim Hardy of the Bluefield, Va., Volunteer Fire Department. He said it took about three hours to extricate the victims from the vehicle.

“There were no skid marks on the highway but the vehicle was wedged in between two trees,” Hardy said. “It was traveling westbound at an extremely high rate of speed when it left the road. The two victims were wrapped up in the wreckage of the full-size Chevy pickup truck. We had to take the truck apart piece by piece to get them out.”

Tommy Carroll, administrator of the Bluefield, Va., Rescue Squad said that the impact of the wreck stripped both front fenders off of the vehicle. “The trees were wedging both of the doors on the pickup,” Carroll said. “It was difficult to get the victims out.”

Carroll did not identify the victims, but said they were both 18-year-old males from North Tazewell, Va. “The driver was transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn., and the passenger was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.,” Carroll said.

Hardy said that all of the firefighters as well as personnel from the rescue squad worked together to free the victims. “Everybody worked good together,” Hardy said. “They were just pinned in there so tight with the dashboard rolled back over their legs. One of the good things was that they didn’t lose conscientiousness. We couldn’t cut the trees down because they would have knocked out the power lines. It was a challenging extrication.”

Two helicopters — the Virginia State Police’s MedFlight II helicopter and Wellmont One helicopter out of Tennessee — transported the victims from the crash scene.

A deputy with the Tazewell County Sheriff’s office investigated the accident, but could not be reached for comment Sunday afternoon. Hardy said the firefighters cleared the scene at 6:48 a.m.

Terrible, terrible incident.

I do hope and pray that both of those young men recover fully, and barring that, as well as they possibly can. And my prayers go out to their families in these difficult times.

This brings up a larger issue, though. It's almost a given: reckless rates of speed + ridiculous hours of the morning + other possible variables = certain trouble. May everyone take a lesson here.

I saw the two trees they were pinned between...God only knows how fast they were going for a full sized Chevy pickup to be pinned between those trees...like squeezing an elephant into a phone booth...
