GrundyWinsAll 10 Report Share Posted February 5, 2010 Got this from Bristol Herald Courier Grundy Dominates Southwest District Wrestling Tournament BY LLOYD COMBS Sports Correspondent Published: February 5, 2010 » 0 Comments | Post a Comment vote nowBuzz up!GRUNDY, Va. – Grundy wrestling has been rejuvenated with a youth movement the last couple of years. The only two seniors in the lineup, however, were in the spotlight for the Golden Wave Thursday night. Senior Ethan Owens won his fourth Southwest District title in four years, while another Wave senior, Jon Dotson, won his second crown for Grundy. The Golden Wave had 10 individual champs in all in winning its 27th straight SWD tournament Thursday at Riverview Elementary-Middle School. Owens (145 pounds) and Dotson (135) shared co-Outstanding Wrestler honors for the Golden Wave, which nearly doubled up on second-place Richlands, 286-146, in team points. Freshman Austin Compton gave Grundy its first winner, with a pin of Aaron Haywood of Richlands at the 3:11 mark at 103 pounds. Sean Vandyke (112), Jeremy Hurley (119), Dakota Vance (130), Cody Rife (145), Tyler McClanahan (160), Tanner McClanahan (171) and Daniel Lowe (215) added SWD titles for the Wave. Tazewell had two individual champions among its three finalists. Cody Wilson won the 125-pound crown, taking a 7-2 decision from Grundy freshman Justin Street. Aaron McReynolds won by fall, in 1:01, over Carroll County’s Nicholas Tober, at 152 pounds. Richlands heavyweight Zach McClanahan won his first SWD title, with a 6-2 decision over Marion’s Brent Myers. Nick Groseclose of Marion took the 189-pound championship with a 10-0 major decision over Grundy’s Jake McCowan. The most exciting match of the finals may have been Jon Dotson’s dramatic comeback win over a two-time Region IV champ, Luke Allison of Tazewell. Allison held a 4-3 lead entering the final minute of the third period when Dotson threw him to the mat and pinned him at the 5:11 mark. “That was the match of the night,†Grundy coach Travis Fiser said. “Jon-Dot stepped up and wrestled like it was his last year, and he beat a very good wrestler.†Ethan Owens joined an elite list of four-time SWD champs and dominated the 140-pound weight class in doing it. He won a 15-0 tech fall over Abingdon’s Grayson Tobler. Owens said he never looks ahead, even when he’s favored, even on a team that dominates its district, and a program that won 15 state titles from 1978-2001. Grundy appears to have its best shot in years at dethroning eight-time defending Group AA champ Christiansburg, in next weekend’s Region IV meet and at state. “I’m just thrilled to be a part of this program,†said Owens, who reached the state finals as a sophomore, but was injured in the semifinals a year ago. “I just take it one match at a time at this point of the year. You can’t take anyone for granted.†Sean Vandyke and Jeremy Hurley earned their third SWD crowns by fall. Four other Grundy wrestlers won their second Southwest District titles. Dakota Vance and Cody Rife pinned their opponents in the finals. Tyler McClanahan and his brother Tanner both won their second district championships by tech fall. Daniel Lowe pinned Carroll County’s Mike Quesenberry at 215 pounds to win his first district crown. Zach McClanahan followed in his father Mike’s footsteps in winning a Southwest District title. The younger McClanahan is a natural 215-pounder, and was out to outlast his bigger opponent. “I wanted to try and wear him down and get through the third period,†McClanahan said. “I was ready to go to overtime, I just popped him and got a takedown at the end.†Myers had defeated McClanahan twice earlier this season. “Zach is a super kid,†Richlands coach Frank Daugherty said. “He finished third at 215 last year, and he was going to wrestle there again, but we had another 215-pounder, but we didn’t have a heavyweight, so he did it for the team. “Myers beat us by one point two other times. I just told Zach, we lost the battles, now it’s time to win the war, and he did. I’m really happy for him.†The top four place-winners in each weight class move on to the Region IV tournament Feb. 12 and 13 at Christiansburg. VHSLhelper 571 Author Report Share Posted February 5, 2010 yep... full house. 16 team bracket but just 3 disttricts ... River Ridge & Piedmont take 5, we take 6 per weight. Only 2 of the wrestlers last night didn't advance; I don't have a copy of the brackets, so I don't know which weights.
