Most of those Giles and Galax kids have played on the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour for several years...experience playing in those summer tournaments has really paid off for several schools in SWVA over the last few years...

Last year, Gate City's entire team played on the BRJGT, this past summer they did not, however...

Wrong ball penalty dooms Giles’ state golf repeat hopes

staff reports

Bluefield Daily Telegraph The Bluefield Daily Telegraph Wed Oct 13, 2010, 05:00 AM EDT

HARTFIELD, Va. — A penalty for using an incorrect ball allowed Galax to capture the Maroon Tide’s second Group A state golf championship in three years over the Giles Spartans.

Giles, which won the title over Galax last year, and finished second to the Maroon Tide in 2008, actually scored better than Galax, but a Giles player used the incorrect ball early in the second of two rounds on Tuesday at Piankatank River Golf Club.

According to Greg Harrow, the director of the event, that move disqualified the Giles player, dropped his score from a 79 to 89, and allowed Galax to finish with a two-day total of 636. After the penalty, Giles finished with a 638.

“It was just an unfortunate circumstance,†Harrow said. “It was a total misunderstanding on the players’ part. It is just a shame.â€

Giles had a seven-stroke lead after the opening round over Chatham, with Galax trailing by 10, but Brock Cox fired a 75 on Tuesday to help the Maroon Tide trim the lead. Cox finished fifth as an individual.

Tanner Carbaugh of Giles followed up an opening round 74 with a 73 to finish with a 147, winning the individiual championship.

Other Giles scorers included Gunar Frazier (78-79, 157), Blake Martin (80-86, 166), Andrew Epperley (96-89, 185), Tyler Meredith (79-89, 188) and Caleb Tilley (99-90, 198).

Galax also received a of two-day 159s from John Bryant (80-79) and Dustin Thompson (80, 79, 159).

Chatham finished third in the tournament with a two-day total of 642.
