Brown has a quadruple double!!!!!

Summers County forced an amazing 52 turnovers, including 31 in the opening half take a 57-10 lead. Candace Brown led the Bobcats’ patented pressure defense with 15 steals, and also added 16 points, 14 rebounds and dished out 10 assists.

Also in the article...Raiders took 32 shots....Summers had 32 in the first quarter. Raiders had a total of 26 points, Bobcats had 26 before the Raiders scored their first bucket!

Completely crazy...domination! Can PikeView pull the upset?

I hope so...

First off, complete congratulations to ALL of the girls who contributed to the streak.

Second Summers County needs to lose because of Wayne Ryan, who runs up the score unnecessarily all the time. No need for it, and we all know it.

I know I have a bone to pick, but is this necessary?

22 02/17/11 07:30PM H WESTSIDE 99 - 44

wins: 22 lost: 0 ties: 0

They press the ENTIRE time, and officials are afraid to call fouls to get them off their back, cause of Ryan's demeanor and power in the WVSSAC. Needs to be stopped.

How often do you see a WV HS girls team score in the 90's? Rarely. Unless you run it up for no reason.

Why should they play down to their competition?

Should Bluefield football not return kicks or throw passes downfield against some teams just for the sake of not looking like they are blowing them out 82-0?

And its not like they've loaded their schedule with cupcakes...eight of their games have been against AAA competition and as I pointed out, several of the schools on their schedule are ranked in the latest AP Girls Top 10...

I have no problem with scheduling tough teams, and beating them soundly.

But what is the difference in beating a team by 30 or by 50?

Go watch one of these games. They press the ENTIRE game. Its not like they are trying not to score, like when Bluefield takes back a kick or makes a huge run late in the game. Summers likes to rub it in. Which is wrong.

Why press a team that is already down 50? Such as last night? Unless you just want to be a jerk.

I just believe in good sportsmanship.

Scoring points and winning is one thing, placing embarrassment on teams getting beat by 50 is another. Summers county is hands down better than any team they've so far faced. I don't think it would look near as bad on the coach if he would call off the press after they get up by 30 and play the entire bench. Its no fun when you are on the receiving end of it

I understand what you are saying. If you are up by 40 in football in the 4th quarter you don't keep throwing down the field trying to score 100. No you are going to run the ball and if you break a long touch down run then so be it. So why in basketball is it ok to still be in your full court press in the 4th quarter when up by 40??? If you are that good, get in half court defense and if they turn it over against your half court defense then so be it.

I believe in good sportsmanship too, but are the starters on the floor the whole time, or is this the bench? You can look at it this way too......If he doesn't get those subs in working on what makes them tick......the press....then what happens when they are in a state playoff and an injury or foul out situation occurs? I also see your point of just backing off and playing zone or man in half court, but I also agree with this is a varsity sport. You gotta get better or lose and lose badly. I'm very impressed with SC, the other teams just have to get better at taking care of the ball against the press and playing b etter D.

FG, I think this covers your question completely, and after this stat you will see what I see in Wayne Ryan.

Of the 98 points Summers County scored last night...

10 came from the bench.

These are high school kids, they are not scholarship players. There is no point none embarassing kids to the degree that they are doing. I tried to schedule Summers County years ago and was unable to at that time. We were pretty good at the time and wanted the competition, but I knew going in it would probably be at least a 40 point loss. Several years ago they beat Liberty by over 100 points. It was like 117-12 or something like that. Was that really called for? You want your subs to work on the press then put them in 4 minutes into the game when the score is already 20-2 and let them press. Then put your starters back in whenever and dont press so that they can work on half court offense in preparation for the team that might be able to handle your press. And how are you gonna feel when the other team gets tired of it and decides to play rough and injure a couple of your starters in the game up 50. Wonder why people wont schedule them, take a guess, they dont want their girls humiliated.

Throughout the late 90s and early 2000s I took numerous beatings at the hands of MCA. Often times the same situation, starters in and pressing very late into the game up 40. The first year MCA was down (bad recruiting year i guess), I had a very good team. Many of those girls had been beat bad the previous year by MCA and it had stuck with them. Our first game with them we led probably by close to 30 at halftime. I only had 8 players on the team and they all were pretty good. At halftime I told the girls we were not pressing anymore and would play many different combinations to work on different things. They said but coach, and I told them, those are not the kids that beat you last year and that is not the coach that beat you last year, we are not embarrassing those kids like they did to you.

After the game when I emerged from the locker room a fan from MCA (elderly gentleman) made eye contact with me and said coach I want to tell you something. I immediately thought oh great he thinks we ran it up and Im gonna have to bite my tongue but he said the following: "I been watching basketball here for a lot of years, and Ive seen you take a lot of unnecessary beatings. You had the chance to pay us back tonight and choose not to. I want to thank you for that.' HE UNDERSTOOD!
