The following are brief summaries of each nominee as appeared in Sunday's (May 8th) print edition. The finalists, when chosen, will each have a detailed article. Hopefully BHC will put finalists stories on-line and I will post accordingly.

Carla Suthers - George Wythe

Having dished out more than 2,000 career assists during her volleyball career, Suthers knows the importance of communication, leadership and poise.

She displays all of those traits as a student, athlete and citizen.

A four-year volleyball starter, Suthers also starred in baskeball and track and field.

She has a 4.2778 GPA and ranks fourth in her class and has attended Southwest Virginia Governor's School. She spent time observing both the operating and recovery rooms of a local hospital as part of an internship.

Suthers has also lent time to the Fit for Life Organization, Agape Food Pantry and as a babysitter.

She'll play volleyball at Emory & Henry College this fall.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Kelsey Weddle - Patrick Henry

It might be an understatement to say that Weddle enjoys playing sports.

She has earned 16 varsity letters during her high school career in basketball, volleyball, cross country, softball and track. She has completed at the state level in three sports and owns seven state medals in track including a second place in the state her junior year in the 300 hurdles.

She not only excels on the field of play but also in the classroom where she has a 4.0 GPA earning an Advanced Studies Diploma with the Governor's Seal. She has missed only two days of high school and this was due to her father having heart surgery.

Weddle also gives back to her community earning the Civics Seal for completing more than 50 hours of community service including as a camp counselor for disadvantaged teens.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Brandon Kegley - Marion

Kegley knows what it feels like to be at the top of his game as he is ranked first in his class of 155 with a 4.5 GPA.

He will graduate with an advanced studies diploma and will earn the Governor's Seal for academic excellence and the Civic Seal. He is also an Early College Scholar.

He also knows what it feels like to be at the top of his game in athletics as he was selected four times to the all-state swim team.

Kegley also participated in track and field, cross country and soccer.

Kegley makes sure he fime time to give back to his community as he has been active in many programs including Habitat for Humanity, Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry, serving as a hospice volunteer and he even went on a mission trip to South Dakota.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Samantha Boothe - Tazewell

Boothe has grown accustomed to setting a positive tone for her peers.

In addition to playing basketball and softball, Boothe has supported the Bulldogs as a football and competition cheerleader. She has already earned a spot on the cheerleading squad at Virginia Tech.

Boothe was elected senior class president and is a member of Tazwell County School Superintendent's Advisory Committee. She ranks among the top 10 in her class academically.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Samantha Balthis - Pound

Balthis scored 1,522 career points, the most of any female basketball player in school history. That's far from the only legacy she's left at the small Wise County school.

Balthis will graduate with a 4.13 GPA, is the salutatorian of her class and a member of several school clubs.

The four-time All-Region D performer in cross country also lends a hand in her community. She has visited the Laurel's Nursing Home and given gift baskets to the elderly and also helped with feeding the homeless.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Lindsey O'Quinn - John Battle

John Battle principal Jeff Hawkins describes O'Quinn as a model student who is punctual, dedicated and reliable.

Those qualities have served O'Quinn well. She has compiled a 3.93 GPA while balancing four sports and a busy schedule of community service projects.

O'Quinn was a four-year starter and guiding force behind the Trojans baskeball team, which won its first regional title since 1998 this season. She also earned first-team All-Group A honors as a goalkeeper in soccer.

Dustin Clear - Northwood

For a guy who once carried the football 51 times in a single game, Clear is used to dealing with a heavy workload. He's done it for the past four years at Northwood.

Along with his football prowess, Clear compiled a 160-41 career wrestling record and has competed in baseball.

He has a 3.6 GPA and is a member of the DECA and BETA clubs. He's volunteered at a local food pantry boxing canned goods and helped run wrestling tournaments for little leaguers in the Saltville area.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Caleb Daniels - J.I. Burton

Daniels possesses a plus fastball while on the mound for the J.I. Burton baseball team. Off the field, he's on the fast track to success.

The three-sport standout is the ace of the Raiders' pitching staff, stars on the school's upstart swim team and has played in the Region D golf tournament.

He possesses a 3.8 GPA and had an SAT score of 1120. He is a member of several school clubs and worked as a cashier this winter at a local supermarket.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Jace Devault - Tennessee High

DeVault didn't just finish seventh in the AAA state golf tournament last October or become a major contributor to the Vikings basketball squad all winter.

He did it all mere months after breaking his collar bone, jaw, pelvis and several ribs--not to mention puncturing his lungs and spleen--in a car accident in April 2010.

Once he recovered from his own injuries, Devault jumped back into his work with special-needs children and volunteering at track-and-field and swimming events.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Preston Dishner - Sullivan East

Dishner does the dirty work in athletics, but he still shines.

The captain of both the football and basketball team this year for the Patriots, Dishner was a defensive maniac for East, playing linebacker on the gridiron and routinely harassing the opposition's top scorer on the hardwood.

When he wasn't earning honors in the classroom for his pre-calculus and English work while carrying a 3.9 GPA, Dishner still found time to serve on the Student Council and was also a member of FCA, Skills USA and the National Honor Society.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

B.J. Farmer - Cloudland

A standout basketball player, Farmer excels even more in the volunteering arena.

Helping the elderly and youth alike, Farmer has, throughout his time at Cloudland, donated his free time to visiting nursing homes and helping with Operation Christmas Child and buddy walks.

He also quite literally gave of himself for others, donating blood this year.

Farmer is a member of Bethel Church of Christ and is the president of the engineering club in addition to being involved with Beta Club and FTA.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Ian Frye - Virginia High

Frye was recently honored as the Virginia High School League Group A Male athlete of the Year by the Allstate Foundation.

That award is a testament to Frye's range as a student athlete. A first-team all-state selection in football and soccer, Frye accepted an invitation to walk on the football team at the University of Virginia after attracting attention from numerous major college coaches.

Frye, who has a 3.8 GPA, was selected as president and "best all-around-boy" by his class.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hannah Hadaway - Rural Retreat

Hadaway earned a track scholarship to NCAA Division 1 Winthrop (S.C.) University the hard way. Overcoming a serious knee injury with hours of dedication, she worked her way back to become a state champion and future collegiate competitor.

She won the 300-meter hurdles at last year's VHSL Group A meet and also competes in several events on the track.

While her times on the track are impressive, the ones in the classroom are equally impressive for the National Honor Society president.

None of the finalists were from NET. Gives us an idea of where BHC is selling their papers.

These aren't the finalists, only a brief summary of all nominees--

In Part II, there are some NET nominees listed. Twenty-eight total, so breaking it down to seven for each part.
