tbgfan 856 Report Share Posted May 13, 2011 SWVA fills girls Group A AP team By BHC Sports Desk Published: May 12, 2011 SWVA fills girls Group A AP team New Virginia High girls basketball coach Mike Goforth was named the Group A coach of the year by the Associated Press on Wednesday after leading J.I. Burton to a Division 1 championship. But the accolades for Southwest Virginia’s small-school basketball players didn’t end there. Patrick Henry’s Cadence Wilmoth and J.I. Burton’s Ra’Shelle Miller earned first-team nods and Savanah Pippin (Virginia High), Chelsea Hill (Ervinton), Katie Jo Lester (Twin Valley), Haley Gilbert (Castlewood) and Fort Chiswell’s Nancy Thacker filled the second team. Miller averaged 14.3 points; 11.1 rebounds and finished her career with 1,930 points, setting the career-scoring record for Burton. Wilmoth averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks as Patrick Henry reached the Division 2 final where the Rebels lost to Radford, led by Group A player of the year Maryah Sydnor. On Sunday, Goforth told the Bristol Herald Courier that he was taking the same job at Virginia High next season, replacing Barry Reed. Beamerball 566 Report Share Posted May 15, 2011 Reed's staying at VHS, just stepping down as basketball coach, will still be softball coach and the A.D.
