stu_bean 1,058 Report Share Posted April 26, 2012 Was driving down through Smyth co this past weekend and got to thinking, when and why did they rename Saltville high school to Northwood? Was there a Rich Valley HS as well back in the day?
RichlandsAlum 678 Report Share Posted April 26, 2012 Was driving down through Smyth co this past weekend and got to thinking, when and why did they rename Saltville high school to Northwood? Was there a Rich Valley HS as well back in the day? The school in Saltville was actually R.B. Worthy High School. That school merged with Rich Valley in the mid 1980's to form Northwood. Gym 10 Report Share Posted April 26, 2012 My dad went Rich Valley High and played football back in the 70's. They combined Saltville and Rich Valley and made Northwood, dad says it was like combining Richlands and Tazewell or Graham and Bluefield, they were huge rivals. hoard 18 Report Share Posted April 26, 2012 Incidentally, for many years the kids that went to the old Tannersville Elementary used to go on to middle/high school at Rich Valley even though their residences were in Tazewell County. In 1985-86 those kids started attending middle and high school in Tazewell. I'm thinking Northwood began in fall of 1986.

Worthy (Saltville) Shakers from 1957 to 1986. Became the Northwood Panthers in 1987 when the Rich Valley school and the R.B. Worthy school merged. And yes, these two schools were big rivals. It wasn't a popular decision in either of the two communities.

stu_bean 1,058 Author Report Share Posted April 26, 2012 What was Rich Valley's mascot? Such a shame to see things like that happen. Although probably in time it will here before too long. Imagine Tazewell and Richlands becoming one school...I know I sure would hate to see that day come.

Jeff did not come until his sophomore year.
