First-place votes in parenthesis

No. 1 Clintwood at No. 7 Union

Last meeting: Clintwood 30, Union 26 (Sept. 30, 2011 in Clintwood, Va.)

This might just be the best game on the schedule tonight in Southwest Virginia. … If it is anything like the 2011 matchup, drama will permeate Bullitt Park. … Union jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter of last season’s game, but Clintwood rallied and dominated the second half. It was one of the turning points for a Clintwood season that ended with a state championship. … Gavan Meade rushed for 292 yards, scored four touchdowns and snagged an interception last season against the Bears. The senior running back is nearly impossible to contain. … This will be old-school Lonesome Pine District football at its finest since both squads rely on bruising rushing attacks, physical linemen and relentless defenses. … Get there early. It should be a good one.

Prediction: Clintwood 20, Union 10

Abingdon at No. 2 John Battle

Last meeting: Abingdon 13, John Battle 6 (Sept. 30, 2011in Abingdon, Va. )

Last year’s overtime victory on homecoming featured a bittersweet twist Abingdon. In a herculean effort, Caleb Widner rushed for 222 yards on 38 carries but suffering a season-ending knee injury. Grant Pennings provided the game-winning score. …The last time Battle beat AHS was 1991, and the Trojans haven’t defeated Abingdon and Virginia High in the same season since 1990. …With a mix of power and speed, Battle averages 35 points per game. The Battle defense has not allowed more than 14 points in a game while recording two shutouts. ... Nine different players have scored touchdowns for the Trojans. … AHS generated 179 total yards last week in a 10-0 win at Happy Valley. … Cody Rogers makes the difference here for Battle.

Prediction: John Battle 30, Abingdon 13

No. 2 Honaker at No. 4 Richlands

Last meeting: Richlands 45, Honaker 19 (Sept. 30, 2011 in Honaker, Va.)

Richlands rushed for 291 yards in this game last season, with Devon Johnson accounting for 215 yards and three scores. Honaker, which led 12-7 after the opening quarter, compiled 235 total yards. … One week after seeing its 32-game regular season win streak end at Pulaski County, Richlands opened a 48-9 halftime lead at Patrick County en route a 62-16 win. A.J. Johnson collected three touchdown passes and two interceptions. … Honaker features a balanced offense along with power blocker Jonathan Ritchie and defensive thumpers such as Chandler Miller and Dakota Stevens. … The arm of Gray Baker makes the difference for Richlands.

Prediction: Richlands 28, Honaker 17

No. 5 Tennessee High at Daniel Boone

Last meeting: Tennessee High 29, Daniel Boone 22 (Sept. 30, 2011 in Bristol, Tenn.)

This could be a defining matchup for a pair of programs that have been on eerily similar tracks the past two seasons. Both teams finished a disappointing 5-5 in the 2011 regular season, but have bounced back to post 4-1 marks at the midpoint of the 2012 campaign. … Both teams are also coming off their bye week, but Tennessee High is carrying a three-game winning streak while the Trailblazers were thumped 56-21 by Dobyns-Bennett in their last outing. … After surely watching plenty of film of Adam Mitchell’s dominant performance against Sullivan South, will Boone have an answer for the emerging Tennessee High receiver? Don’t count on it.

Prediction: Tennessee High 31, Daniel Boone 27

No. 6 George Wythe at Marion

Last meeting: George Wythe 52, Marion 13 (Sept. 30, 2011 in Wytheville, Va.)

George Wythe opened a 45-0 halftime lead in this game last season and finished with 432 yards rushing. …With several members of the GW coaching staff watching from the stands last week, Marion dropped a bitter 21-20 decision to Graham. … Behind relentless running back Ethan Richardson, Marion has rushed for at least 162 yards every game this season. … Isaac Glass is a weapon for Marion, collecting 34 points as a kicker and providing big hits on defense. Skyler Harmon, Trey Crook and Riley Blevins are also leaders for the Marion defense. … GW averages 34 points behind speedy running back Dominique Crockett, powerful tight end Hardy Lester and experienced quarterback Alex Willis. … These two schools will be rivals in the Hogoheegee District next season.

Prediction: George Wythe 28, Marion 17

In their webcast they didn't even talk about Honaker/Richlands....so I guess it isn't that important....to them....

What`s your super seven??

My biggest problem with their's is having Honaker at 2, Richlands at 4, yet Richlands being picked to win by double digits against Honaker. Honaker nor JSB deserve to be on any list that is above Richlands. Richlands will win that game handily.
