No. 1 Gate City at Abingdon

Last meeting: Gate City 42, Abingdon 21 (Sept. 6, 2013, in Gate City, Va.)

Gate City built a 35-7 halftime lead against the Falcons last season at Legion Field. The Blue Devils finished with 254 yards rushing while holding AHS to 71. The blowout was the lone victory for GC in its first five games. … Abingdon junior Raequon Jordan, who had over 150 total yards against GC last season including kick returns, rushed for 60 yards on just seven carries last week against John Battle. … New AHS head coach Darren Reed was a standout linebacker at Gate City before beginning a long run as assistant coach. … With slick quarterback Hunter Collier and powerful running back Evan Baker, GC can score from a power set or spread attack on offense. The real difference here comes from heavy hitters such as linebacker Logan Rasnick and senior lineman Nick Mann.

Prediction: Gate City 28, Abingdon 14

No. 4 Lee High at Thomas Walker

Last meeting: Lee High 47, Thomas Walker 6 (Sept. 6, 2013, in Ben Hur, Va.)

Thomas Walker has already matched its win total from a year ago thanks to a 20-14 Week 1 triumph at Patrick Henry. Shawn Williams was the catalyst for the Pioneers as he had 107 rushing yards, the game-clinching touchdown, the game-saving interception and eight tackles. … Lee High blasted J.I. Burton with surprising ease last week, 40-22, as running back Cody Haynes led the way. … Haynes and Houston Sage each rushed for two touchdowns as Lee trampled TW last season. … This Lee County rivalry will continue to be lopsided.

Prediction: Lee 48, Thomas Walker 6

Graham at No. 5 Tazewell

Last meeting: Graham 30, Tazewell 14 (Sept. 6, 2013, in Bluefield, W.Va.)

Graham accumulated 308 total yards against the Bulldogs last season while allowing just 198 total yards. Tazewell’s Jacob McReynolds rushed for 107 yards on 19 carries leaving the game due to an injury. … The celebration was long and loud in Tazewell last week after the Bulldogs posted a 37-22 win over Virginia High. Quarterback Malik Davis and relentless running back Nick Blankenship posted big numbers behind senior fullback Garrett Jessee and experienced lineman such as Andrew Comer (6-1, 312) and Alex Hayes … Graham opened the season with a 76-48 loss to crosstown rival Bluefield at 10,000-seat Mitchell Stadium. Bluefield churned out 573 yards of total offense. … The leaders for Graham are four-year regulars Jarrod Richmond and Dylan Cook.

Prediction: Graham 21, Tazewell 14

Union at No. 6 Richlands

Last meeting: Union 27, Richlands 21 (Sept. 6, 2013, in Big Stone Gap, Va.)

It will be hard to top the 2013 meeting between these two teams at Bullitt Park. With Colton Staten grinding out 175 rushing on 24 carries, Richlands collected 321 total yards. Union pulled out the win thanks to a 39-yard interception return for a score by Brandon Hubbard on the final play of the game. … Union managed 97 yards rushing last week in a 19-13 win over Clintwood, but senior quarterback Tanner Hall and freshman James Mitchell posted solid numbers. The Bears actually built a 19-0 lead before Clintwood rallied. … Richlands displayed some offensive balance last week against Gate City with durable quarterback River Michaels and quick senior running back Griffin McCauley, but the Blues must recover from injuries to 6-1 receiver Bryce Farris (collarbone) and massive lineman Anthony Cordle.

Prediction: Richlands 21, Union 20
