No. 5 Gate City at No. 1 Richlands

Last meeting: Richlands 35, Gate City 28 (Nov. 29, 2014 in Gate City, Va.)

This will be 41st meeting these two football hungry schools. Surprisingly, last November’s clash at Legion Field was the first playoff matchup between the two. As usual, interest is high in this rematch with fans likely to arrive at least two hours before kickoff. … Gate City rushed for 262 yards and overcame a 10-7 third-quarter deficit en route to a 28-17 win over Richlands in the storm-delayed opening game last season. Richlands then gained revenge in the playoffs, as quarterback River Michaels completed 20-of-28 passes for 335 yards and three scores while running for 77 yards. …Michaels is gone, but Richlands coach Greg Mance has restocked with all sorts of skill-position athletes that should flourish in the spread offense. First-year quarterback John-Luke Asbury is accurate, while 6-foot-4 junior transfer Cody Howie could be one of the top newcomers in Southwest Virginia. … Gate City must replace speedy Caleb Herron and powerful Evan Baker in the backfield, but quarterback Hunter Collier can run and throw.

Prediction: Richlands 28, Gate City 14

No. 3 Tennessee High at Sullivan South

Last meeting: Tennessee High 35, Sullivan South 28 (Aug. 29, 2014, in Bristol, Tenn.)

Tennessee High’s comeback win over South early in the 2014 season looked even more impressive as the year went on as the Rebels didn’t lose again until the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs. The 35 points scored by the Vikings were also the most the Rebels allowed all season until their postseason setback. … Games between Tennessee High and South have featured their fair share of aerial highlights in recent years, but the skies should be mostly quiet tonight. The Rebels passed for only 42 yards in a 21-14 victory over Boone to open the season, while Tennessee High managed just 40 yards through the air in its 45-14 setback to Dobyns-Bennett last week. … South has beaten the Vikings 17 times, but its 19 losses to Tennessee High are the most against opponent other than D-B. … After a shaky showing against D-B, the Tennessee High defense must make a statement tonight against a strong South offensive line.

Prediction: Tennessee High 35, Sullivan South 14

Radford at No. 5 George Wythe, 7 p.m.

Last meeting: Radford 35, George Wythe 14 (Aug. 29, 2014 in Radford, Va.)

Just call them the new-look George Wythe Maroons. Head coach Brandon Harner’s club returns just three full-time starters on offense and five starters are back on defense. … Gavin Gray, Larry Isaac, Jason Jones and Parker Coe are sophomores who will start on GW’s offensive line. Gray started last season. … Heth Grant (the nephew of Clintwood legend Johnny McFall) and senior quarterback Marcus Finley are the headliners for Radford, which has speed to burn at the skill positions. … Former Rural Retreat head coach Quinton Hensley is now an assistant at George Wythe. … Both of these clubs had their seasons ended by Honaker last year. Radford lost to the Tigers in the second round of the playoffs, while GW was sent packing by the Russell County squad in the state quarterfinals. … Radford holds a 35-22-1 edge in the series since 1951.

Prediction: Radford 21, George Wythe 10

John Battle at No. 7 Abingdon

Last meeting: Abingdon 60, John Battle 20 (Aug. 29, 2014 in Bristol, Va.)

This game might bring back nightmares for John Battle fans. Behind the dominant play of quarterback Jake Sturgill and running back Raequon Jordan, AHS built a 47-0 halftime lead. Just two days later, first-year Battle head coach Brian Lee resigned. The highlight for the Trojans was the play of quarterback Matt Tipton, who passed for two scores. … Abingdon must find a running threat to replace Jordan, but Sturgill is surrounded by a cast of tall and sure-handed receivers who excel in the quick-fire spread offense employed by head coach Darren Reed. … John Battle experienced mixed results in the preseason. After being overwhelmed by the power of J.I. Burton, the Trojans tied Fort Chiswell 7-7 last week as senior Seth Leonard supplied a touchdown. … At the start of practice, new Battle coach Britt Stone greeted 18 seniors among a roster of 67. … Michael Musser provides power at running back and linebacker, while Tipton is creative. … The quick pace of AHS will be too much for Battle.

Prediction: Abingdon 35, John Battle 7
