i was thinking the other day about rivals in football.. usually it is between schools that are close to one another, like pitt and wvu. two people could actually be next door neighbors and go to different schools. so i thought this may be fun to do

examples......

Big Creek....going clock wise on the map MtView, Pocahontas, Tazewell, Richlands, Twin Valley, and Iaeger.

thats 6 school that could be rivals.. but they only played two

example 2

Tazewell....clock wise.....BigCreek, Pocahontas, Graham, Bland co. Northwood, RIchlands, and Twin Valley. out of those 7 they play 2.

example 3

Graham... Pocahontas, Bluefield, Bland co. and Tazewell... only 4 and they play 2 of them.

I see where you're coming from, but sometimes a geographic rivalry doesn't help a team get into the playoffs. Doesn't the VHSL use some kind of power point system now? If so, Graham wouldn't want to play Pocy or Bland. Nothing against those two schools, they're just smaller and from what is considered a weaker district.

Just for fun though, if Gate City did the clockwise thing then they would hopefully play Dobyns-Bennett or Science Hill or Graham.

Back in the day the two were big time rivals, but now a days its not that big. And the reason for that is they dont play against each other in any sport. The most recent time these two have played in any sports was in 2004 when they played basketball. That game was not even arranged between the schools in came in a christmas tourney at Twin Valley. But the intinsity and passion was still there. With both programs being in "Transition" periods in all sports it would be a good time to start it back up.

Up until this year Mount View and Big Creek had been playing each other for the past several years, but Big Creek decided not to play MV this year, and when they seen they weren't going to be able to fill their schedule they contacted Mount View at the last minute wanting to play just after MV picked up South Point,Oh to make 10 games. No disrespect to Big Creek, but their football program has really fallen on hhard times with the lack of kids participating in football there, and the fact that they are a single A school it really doesn't benefit MV to play them, because it hurts point wise. I honestly would be surprised to see the 2 schools play each other again in football before the consolidation takes place.

Montcalm has always been a rival to Pocahontas in basketball, even ugly at times, and it's carried over to football when Montcalm started a team.

yeah true.. but in the 70s and 80s when i went to bigcreek we played northfork gary and welch and tazewell and richlands and grundy some.. ieager wouldnt play us... northfork had never beaten us at that point niether had ieager, in the schools history or so thats what turner told us. welch and gary were tough games. then they combined welch and gary and they were AAA and mtview was an easy win every year for some reason. in their first few years (of course that was the bigcreek glory days of abercombie jameson wilson and muncey.) we hung 50 on them about every year.
