KHS looks to shock the world against Bluefield

By TONY CIMAGLIA Tribune Managing Editor

Heading into this year's state playoffs, Keyser head coach Sean Biser thought his Golden Tornado might be the sleeper team of Class AA, but after a 53-16 waxing of No. 9 Sherman last Friday, that may no longer be the case.

"Not a lot of people around the rest of the state know who we are or know anything about us, because we don't play a lot of teams down south or in the western part of the state," Biser said. "We're not going to get any respect, and a lot of people thought Sherman was going to come up here and wipe us off the field. I think we might have opened some eyes against Sherman, so maybe we're not the sleeper anymore."

No. 8 Keyser (8-3) can open a lot more eyes this afternoon when it travels to take on the top-ranked and undefeated Bluefield Beavers, widely considered the best team in West Virginia in any class.

"They are very aggressive and have great team speed," Biser said. "They have three running backs plus the quarterback who all run well and carry the ball an equal amount."

As a team, Bluefield rushed for 2,288 yards this season without a single back gaining more than 716 yards.

Derrick Steptoe led the team with that 716 and nine touchdowns. His brother, Quintin, was third on the team with 510 yards and 15 touchdowns, while David Perdue rushed for 546 yards and 12 scores.

Even the quarterback, Rusty Coeburn, found the end zone five times on the ground.

"They run that Jet Sweep really well, so we have to make them throw the ball," Biser said. "They throw it well, but I'd rather make them throw it than have them run it down our throats."

Forcing the Beavers to the air may be a risky endeavor, as Coeburn completed 80-of-124 passes (65 percent) for 1,750 yards and 16 touchdowns. His favorite target is Michael Davis, who caught 38 passes this season for 865 yards and nine touchdowns.

In 11 games this season, Bluefield failed to score at least 31 points only once, a 17-14 victory over Mount View, a team they destroyed 58-0 in the first round last Saturday.

The Beavers scored in the 40s six times this season, and even put up 61 points against Shady Spring in Week 7. They are averaging 42.9 points and 337 yards per game.

Defensively, the Beavers are allowing 12.2 points per game with one shutout and two 6-point efforts.

Daniel Wells leads the defense with 85 tackles with Tracy Coppola not far behind with 84 stops.

"They're defense is very aggressive," Biser said. "They get up the field and penetrate. We have to stop some of that penetration and run some counters to slow the linebackers down. We'll also have to throw the ball when their corners and safeties get up in the running lanes, and we can't run plays that drag out and take too long to develop because they're going to be on us quick."

Despite the fact that many people had Bluefield penciled in to the title game before the playoffs started - they handed Martinsburg its only loss of the season - Biser feels his team can compete mainly due to a grueling regular-season schedule.

"I think we played the toughest schedule of any double-A team in the state," said Biser. "When you look at the teams we played - Fort Hill, Allegany, Loyola, Frankfort, Moorefield - that has prepared us. The kids respect Bluefield, but no matter what happens in the game, we have played teams with their speed and size so that's already taken care of itself."

The one advantage the Golden Tornado may have over Bluefield is their size, and Biser hopes that edge can negate some of the Beavers' speed.

"I think we have pretty good team speed, but not as good as theirs," he said. "It's kind of like a heavyweight fight. If we can get some body shots in and wear them down, we have a chance. They are well-conditioned and coached very well. They do a great job with their speed and strength programs, and it shows in the way they play. It's going to be a tough, tough game."

Today's winner will take either No. 4 James Monroe or No. 5 Weir in the Class AA semifinals.

Kickoff is slated for 1:30

The team doesn't need any bulletin board material. It's the playoffs and if you cannot get up for a playoff game then you better stay home. I believe it's going to be a very physical game today and you know how this team loves those...

Forget the Martinsburg game, it's over and we don't get points on the scoreboard b/c we beat Martinsburg. It's nice to have did that, but now the real order of the season is underway...
