BLUEFIELD - For the second consecutive game the Bluefield Beavers had to go to overtime, and for the second straight contest the Beavers came out victorious. The latest episode being a 77-70 overtime thriller against the Oak Hill Red Devils at the BHS gymnasium.

A free throw by Quintin Steptoe with four-tenths of a second to play in the fourth quarter sent the game to an extra session and it was all-Bluefield in overtime.

Offensive firepower from Bluefield came from its perimeter as Dexter Moore and Johnathan Repass combined for 16 first quarter points that gave the Beavers a 25-19 lead after one. Oak Hill stayed close with its hot free throw shooting, a perfect 6-for-6 in the opening stanza.

The Beavers, playing without big men Rusty Coeburn (medical condition) and Tremayne Matthews (disciplinary reasons), had scoring woes in the second, putting only eight points on the board, the last ones coming on a three by Repass with 3:39 left in the half.

"The problem in the first half was not having a presence in the paint," said Bluefield head coach Ernie Gilliard.

Eric Kittle's put back with 1:15 to go pulled the Red Devils even at 33 and that is where it stood at the half.

Bluefield was 0-for-3 from the charity stripe and Oak Hill 9-for-9 in the first half.

The Red Devils claimed the lead from the line and extended it to as many as four points midway through the third quarter. But Moore's bucket off Jerome Powell's steal put Bluefield back on top with 2:31 to play. The Beavers would lead by five, 50-45 going into thefinal period.

Oak Hill retook the lead only to see Repass bring the Beavers back and recapture it with a three with six minutes to play in regulation.

The Beavers' full court press and defense forced the Devils into turnovers and the home team built a 64-58 lead with just over four minutes to go.

Up by one with two minutes left Bluefield took the air out of the ball. The Beavers ran the weave for a minute before a steal and bucket by Eric Harvey put Oak Hill back in front.

The Beavers would then tie the game on Steptoe's free throw with less than a second to play in regulation time.

In overtime Oak Hill scored the first basket. Moore would drill a three to draw Bluefield even at 70, before Repass hit the bottom of the net with a three to put Bluefield ahead 73-70.

Repass would then steal the ball on the opposite end of the court, tip it to Jonathan Payne who passed back to Repass for another trey. Moore hit two free throws , Payne had a steal, Moore hit another free throw and the game ended when Repass stole the ball and laid it in at the buzzer for a 77-70 Bluefield win.

"I'm very proud of the kids," Gilliard said. "They fought hard, they battled, they hung in there and we got a win.

"What was established tonight was we are a team and we have some other kids capable of stepping up in clutch times and doing a solid job for us."

The Beavers (5-2) were led by Repass with 25 points including five three point baskets. Moore had 23 points and also five treys.

John Lafferty led Oak Hill (1-4) with 26 points and Michael Donnelly added 21.

"In the fourth quarter we're up by one and we've got two foul shots and the ball," said Oak Hill head coach Fred Ferri. "We missed both foul shots, then we missed a one-and-one. We make those foul shots and we win the game...they won the game, don't get me wrong, but if we make the foul shots, it's a different story.

Bluefield returns to the court Friday night at Graham.

They weren't missing much with Matthews. Stick a 5'5" guard down there and you'd have the same presence/production, probably more.
