  2. The question is how does states around us continually build new schools? KY, WVA, NC, SC do it and are they really better off financially? I think it comes to the above post and forward thinking. Building are not going to last forever without major overhauls. But both supervisors and school boards do not plan for those items. Schools get to a point of being patched for so many years that when there is no choice but to build there is no money. Ad declining enrollment and our economy is makes for hard times. Just wanted to make a comment

  3. Guys I have been watching SWVA football for 30 years. Chilhowie has a chance for many reasons but I will speak on two. First sometimes teams just get on a roll and play very well and magic happens (1988 Jonesville Bullddogs) and this year Riverheads are not the Riverheads of the last few years. That is not a slam to Chilhowie but just the truth. I think Riverheads pulls away late but give Chilhowie credit I think they are going to surprise a lot of people.

  4. Ihave seen CHilhowie, Narrows and Galax this year. I my opinion Chilhowie is a better team than Narrows and that is only a compliment to Narrows because they have a good team. If Chilhowie can handle the moment and play football they can beat Galax. Tall task for sure but this could be a great game. As people stated in the other threadd you better get Galax this year or nobody in Single A may for 3-4 years.

  5. Just a question since we are talking about coach of the year. lets discuss this. Are you choosing because they won or the coaching jobs they did. How would Mance, Turner, Carrol do at lets say Rye Cove? I mean if they are great coaches would they have would 6? My thoughts of a great coach isn't necessary winning a bunch of games but putting a hard playing fundamentally sound team. I think there are many coaches at small schools that could win 7 or more at the bigger schools but could the coaches at the bigger sholls win at the small schools? Just food for thought

  6. I think that too many times the coach of the year is selected based on how far they go in the playoffs. No disrespect to any but the best teams usually go the farthest. Now a great team needs great leadership but there are some very good names thrown out here and their season has ended. Great discussion.

  7. I was told last week that the kids in school loved Akers and the rest of the staff. Funny thing that the two teams traded film and coaches met to make a gameplan. Objection upheld hearsay! Gate City after years of cursing the opponents and fans sitting on thei opponents sideline and blowing that terrible horn is having it handed back to them. It just happens that Akers is at the helm. And if the previous staff isnt' at least 3/4 to blame then Akers needs to be hired somehwere because in two years he destroyed the Great City football traditon maybe you can send him to Russia and he can bring Putin down down by next Christmas or may he can join ISIS and stop the terrorists in their tracks............. geesh give it a break.

  8. I have been following this and I see a problem. Eveything the coach says may be true but if he cared about the students he would not have waited until he needed to pul an ace out of the hole. I beleive both sides are at fault and the coach should be releived of his dutes while there is other heads that must roll. What a mess

  9. The fans deserve better? Not sure I can agree with that. As they do pay to get in but outside of that everywhere they are usually to criticial or too overconfident. I am not trying to  ruffle your feathers but I think if kids played the game and no one attended there would be far less problems in sports. Now I know the money pays the bills and fans can fire up the team but for every great fan there are two that are bad. I am sure the fans on this site want what is best for the program but all of this talk has only hurt your program. The kids and eveyone is reading all about the program and that doesn't help. Wish you guys the best in what ever direction the school chooses to take. This area needs strong football tradiotn and Gate City is one of the finest.

  10. "The talent is at GC. They just choose not to play football because it's in shambles. I could name about 10 kids who used to play that have transferred out or decided to just play other sports due to the State of the program. You're starting 5 on the basketball court used to play football. Those 5 kids alone would make a difference. They probably made they right move not playing health and future wise. Our football program is not appetizing to these kids anymore, what reward is there to play? Not the kind that's seen on the basketball court at GC now. We have went stale."

As a life long resident of SWVA this statement is interesting. I have no knowledge of the current coach but do recognize past coaches names. My question about this statement is those 5-10 kids that atre not playing that could help is when did they quit?  quit the day they met Akers? If so he was never given a chance. If they had already decided no to play that is on the old staff. GC may just have hit a rut like many schools do although they are 2A the school is not that big. Talant coens and goes. It does seem to be a mess and the fine folks that do deeply care about the program need to continue to support the young men that are sacrificing for the team. I wish the Devils the best.

  11. Guys just watched the play and that is a football play and no he didn't even go to the ground. But in 2017 that is illegal. This is the rule "

The definition of a blindside block established by the committee is “a block against an opponent other than the runner, who does not see th We may not like and it is too late now for the Mullins kide blocker approaching,” and now results in a 15-yard penalty.

The committee stated that the blindside block “involves contact by a blocker against an opponent who, because of physical positioning and focus of concentration, is vulnerable to injury. Unless initiated with open hands, it is a foul for excessive and unnecessary contact when the block is forceful and outside of the free-blocking zone.” It is too late now for the Mullins kid and would not have changed the injury had a flag beeen thrown but it was illegal. Not cheap just illegal.
