It’s because the new strength of schedule points they added to the system this year. JM played a tougher schedule. Finishing with 3 AA teams and beating all 3 really helped. Plus we got tons of bonus points from Narrow’s and Summers County. West beat us 25-8 didn’t realize that was the meaning of domination. JM actually was up 8-0 in that game and penalties and a couple blown coverages killed us. West has a great team but they have a weak schedule. One of their assistants told me they have trouble finding opponents and they are losing more teams next year. In fact he said they signed a 2 year deal with a team out of Ohio starting next year which is just ridiculous they’re having to do that! He said he was never in favor of the state stepping in and making regional teams play each other but he thinks it might be a good idea now.

Bluefield still has the skill players. What hurt them this year in my opinion was a obvious lack of depth, no true passing QB for a big part of the season and finally their line play on both sides of the ball wasn’t up to their usual standards. That’s where games are won and lost.

Yeah I thought the same thing at the time. Me personally I would’ve used the timeouts and tried to have scored. I was surprised he just let the clock run out. Were those 2 backs at the end of the game for Giles brothers? Looks like both will be good runners in the future. By game plan I meant the way they were trying to run the clock but yeah they should’ve thrown the ball more in the early downs to keep Bluefield honest. I’ve seen you guys talk about your coach a lot. Do you think he will be stepping down?

That was my first time seeing Giles play this year. Offensively I liked their game plan and thought they really got after it. That 21 has some good speed especially as tall as he is. They should try to throw to him more often. I even saw him run wade down from behind on one play that was called back on a penalty. That was pretty impressive! Defensively they obviously didn’t have the overall team speed to keep up with Bluefield but 2 things that stood out to me was they took very poor angles over and over and very poor tackling. Overall I applaud the kids from Giles for coming out and giving their best. With the season they have had it would’ve been easy to just come out and lay down. Seems like they have some pretty good young players coming up so I think they will be back sooner rather than later.

By the end of the 3rd quarter it looked like Bluefield was just ready to go home. Field conditions didn’t help them as they like to run to the outside. They had to try and play power football which worked into Oak Hills favor cause they had some big old boys up front that Bluefield just couldn’t move.

James Monroe had a chance right before halftime. The receiver got behind the defense and the Quarterback over threw him. Would have been an easy touchdown. Same situation in the 3rd quarter. James Monroe ran the same play. Receiver got behind the defense and quarterback over threw him again. Then in the fourth JM got down to the 10 yard line and fumbled. JM could have had at least 2 touchdowns if not 3. Graham never really got close. I think they only made it past midfield once or twice. For the most part both defenses dominated. It was a hard hitting game by both teams. Do you know what Graham’s record was coming into this game?

You’re right it’s on both of us! I know being a AD and working out schedules for every sport must be a major headache! Football wise though we go through this every year so you should learn from your mistakes. We had some issues a few years ago where we didn’t have enough to have a JV but luckily now our numbers are back up again and hopefully it will stay that way. I know our varsity’s were supposed to play each other this year but Nicholas County wouldn’t let us out of our contract and that’s the only date Giles and JM had open together. So hopefully in the very near future we will be playing each other and things might be better for both of us scheduling wise.

I don’t know how it is for everyone else but James Monroe’s JV hardly ever gets to play their schedule. Every year a couple of these teams end up canceling on us due to lack of players or guys being moved to the varsity. I don’t know why we keep scheduling them. In fact we’re playing Greenbrier West twice this year in a home and home series. I think that’s the answer for us going forward. Find teams you can count on and see if they are willing to do that. These kids deserve to be able to play plus it will help keep them interested in playing through their varsity years too.

Mavs JV moves to 4-0 Greenbrier West. 34-0 Shady Springs 26-8 Narrows 36-0 Bluefield 36-6

Actually our offense has been pretty good up to this point. We scored 45 against Wheeling Central in a rematch of last year’s semifinal game. We scored 54 against Pikeview. We came out flat against Narrows tonight but I also have to give credit to Narrows. They did a good job against us. They are a solid team from top to bottom. That QB is an athlete! I felt sorry for him a little at the end. I bet he wakes up sore in the morning. You have to remember this is just our 3rd game. We played week 1 and had a bye week 2. We played week 3 and had a bye week 4. They are still trying to figure things out. Our offense carried us the first 2 games and our defense was lousy. Tonight it was the complete opposite. I don’t know the strength of the teams Narrow’s has left to play but they better bring their A game to beat Narrows!

Yeah this one surprised me. Montcalm used to be on the other end of these type of games a lot. Maybe not as bad as this but by enough to think they would no better to do it to someone else! But I guess not.

Apparently consolidation was a very good move for Alleghany. I keep seeing where their JV squad has just been blowing people out too.
