  1. [ QUOTE ] I know Graves from Graham never went anywhere after HS but now i heard he is running back for the Barons so maybe he will end up going somewhere... [/ QUOTE ] How will he "end up going somewhere" if he plays for the Barons? Under NCAA rules, he will no longer be eligible to participate in college sports...he will have lost his "amateur" status. And certainly, the odds of ANY of these guys going beyond this level as a professional are zero...
  2. Some more "nazi-type" regulations passed by the NCAA just recently in regards to amaturism of student-athletes. It was in a story on ESPN not long ago, may try to search their website or the NCAA website for the new rules...
  3. I think the reason they've done that is due to the new NCAA regulations that don't allow video game makers to use the name or likeness of NCAA players anymore. You will notice the changes when the new games come out...
  4. [ QUOTE ] listed at 5'7" on the football roster [/ QUOTE ] Slightly exaggerated I'd say...
  5. Congrats to all who were honored! BTW, just how short is Theo Justus??? Looking at the pictures, he can't be more than 5'4"...
  6. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] 1st- Abingdon: I never go to a place and expect to lose. District:3-0 Overall: 6-4 [/ QUOTE ] Sounds like you "expect" to lose 4 games [/ QUOTE ] Grundy, Richlands, Graham, Tazewell...lol [/ QUOTE ] I don't think they expect to lose to Graham this year...they aren't playing Graham in '05...
  7. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Not so fast fatboy!!! [/ QUOTE ] goodness someones gonna get their feelings hurt if you guys arent careful!!! [/ QUOTE ] Yeh, sometimes the truth does hurt...
  8. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Then why would he let Bradshaw run roughshod over his program for 3 years? [/ QUOTE ] Only in the eyes of an outsider... [/ QUOTE ] Man the way you are talking down about the god of swvafootball and how he handles his business.....I would think you were an outsider! [/ QUOTE ] Well, no. The way I see it, AB ran roughshod, as you put it, over EVERY football program in SWVA.
  9. [ QUOTE ] I dont think vick will get hurt this season though. [/ QUOTE ] Vick gets hurt EVERY season...
  10. [ QUOTE ] Then why would he let Bradshaw run roughshod over his program for 3 years? [/ QUOTE ] Only in the eyes of an outsider...
  11. I was at Graham '81-'82, '82-'83, '83-'84, and '84-'85...you figure it out...3-2...
  12. Also I failed to mention this in regards to SWD baseball back when I played...my soph. year, V-High won the AA State Championship, my junior year, Abingdon lost in the AA State Championship game, and my senior year, V-High lost in the AA State Championship game. The SWD WAS the dominant district in high school baseball back then. In the six years from '81 -'86, a SWD team played in the State Championship game five times.
  13. [ QUOTE ] I'll give ya that one. Tazewell has only been dominate since around 88 or 89. Almost 20 years. Hell Billy Wagner graduated in 1990. Thats been at least 15 years of dominance. Also let us not forget that when the G-man went to school they very rarely...if ever, beat Tazewell in football. (had to get that jab in gman) [/ QUOTE ] Not so fast fatboy!!! If I recall correctly, we played Tazewell 5 times while I was at Graham...with Graham winning three times (13-0, 6-3, 20-11) and Tazewell twice (13-6 and 7-6). If that's "very rarely", I guess that "winning streak" from '89 to '99 was just an ocassional victory for Graham...
  14. No, I don't think he fell victim to politics. I think he's just too proud to change boats in midstream...and that ruffled a few feathers, that's all...
  15. Coach Lou, who I respect VERY MUCH, did everything he needed to to build Tazewell into a very good program. Tazewell was also fortunate to have lots of financial help from parents and alumni who had DEEP POCKETS. You can't deny that Tazewell has the best baseball program in the SWD and they should because of all the time and effort put into to it by everyone involved. If they "talk big" sometimes, they have every right to until the other schools prove them wrong...
  16. 20 years ago, Tazewell was a middle of the road team in the SWD...V-High, Abingdon, Richlands, and John Battle were the class of the SWD. Tazewell was no better than Gate City, Patrick Henry, and Lebanon. Graham, Marion, and Grundy were still in the basement. As a matter of fact, the years I played baseball for Graham, we were .500 vs. Tazewell in baseball and we were BAD at best!!! The best win against them was my sophomore year when we beat them in the Semifinals of the Coppinger tournament. We came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 in the seventh inning. I still have a scare on my elbow from where I caught it on the corner of home plate while sliding in with the game tying run, just beating the tag...it was a good slide that did it, the throw was up the line a bit but on time to get me...I went inside the catcher sliding sideways reaching back for the plate, he just missed the tag. That game was also my "big break" in high school baseball as I replaced our starting second baseman who dislocated two fingers when he dove head first into second early in the game...I started every game the rest of my high school career. That was back when the Coppinger tournament was a "real" tournament having between 24 and 32 teams that were bracketed, instead of this "round-robin" crap they play with eight teams now. Does anyone else remember that? Tazewell's "dominance" of the SWD didn't start until after the Highlands teams broke away. Even then, they were still "middle of the pack" for the first few seasons ('86-'88)...Richlands, Lebanon, and even Graham for a couple of seasons beat the 'Dogs on a regular basis. Tazewell didn't become the "Top Dogs" until the Wagner-era around 1989-1990.
  17. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I have been to QB camp with Workman and Matthews and based on what I saw there Workman should have been playing all along! [/ QUOTE ] Lots of folks in Bluefield have felt the same way, but the one in charge didn't see it like that... [/ QUOTE ] I would have to say that the one in charge knows a little more about the situation than lots of folks in Bluefield. If the folks in Bluefield really respected the one in charge they would never question his judgement. [/ QUOTE ] Actually, you don't know what you are talking about...some things you don't know in regards to this situation...definitely a case of the better player not getting the opportunity to play due to several circumstances, some football related, some not...wouldn't be suprised if he gets "overlooked" again this year even though he should be the "heir apparent" to the position...
  18. Well guys, I think you all are missing ONE KEY THING...this was a COLLEGE GAME. They don't have a ten run rule in college...just like MLB, score as many as you can. Although, I do think they invoked the "mercy rule" in this one since it only went five innings, unless it was called due to rain or darkness.
  19. I agree! They should get rid of that darned old Coppinger Tournament...and while they're at it, cancel that blessed James H. Drew Carnival that comes to town the last week of May!!!
  20. [ QUOTE ] I have been to QB camp with Workman and Matthews and based on what I saw there Workman should have been playing all along! [/ QUOTE ] Lots of folks in Bluefield have felt the same way, but the one in charge didn't see it like that...
  21. I totally agree with you guys and as I said I was only posting what the fellow told me. Unfortunately, Freddy's rep is not that great around the state of WV. And lots of coaches only see the final scores, not the actual games. I certainly agree that Bluefield could have scored whatever they wanted to on lots of teams last season, and yes, they did pull the starters EARLY AND OFTEN. But the result remained for those that aren't "in the know" to criticize and make the accusations of "running up the score". Seriously though, if those teams mentioned do pull a slick one and create an 11 team AA Conference in southern WV, Bluefield and James Monroe are going to have to "travel the world" to make a 10-game schedule.
  22. [ QUOTE ] that'll never happen. i've never heard of high school teams playing each other twice during the regular season... but it would be interesting. could you imagine having the BEAVER - graham game twice in 1 season? WOW!!! [/ QUOTE ] High school teams have played each other twice during the regular season in VA. One AAA district up around Fredricksburg plays home-home vs. every team in the district every season. Of course, that's only because the County School Board won't let them play out-of-county schools. Also, Dan River and Tunstall played twice last year to fill out a 10-game scheduel after the school mergers in Henry Co. There was talk of Graham and Bluefield playing twice last season until Martinsburg landed on the Bluefield schedule. I know for a fact the Graham coaches offered to play twice last season but Freddy wasn't interested. Fortunately, Princeton had an opening that coincided with one of Graham's open dates and they were able to make a 10-game schedule as well. Bluefield and Graham both need games this coming season...and if a second game was to occur, I don't think it would be on 9/30 as mentioned above...more likely 11/4...one to start the season and one to end the season.
  23. [ QUOTE ] I seriously wonder why nobody wants to play us? I mean its not like where the powerhouse we were last year, ya know? I figured it would just be a tough game for most teams... [/ QUOTE ] You want the honest truth to that question? In speaking with a gentleman who is a well respected official that works lots of games in southern West Virginia, I asked him why it was so difficult for Bluefield to schedule 10 games. His honest, and I would say educated reply since he named MANY coaches whom he had personally talked to about this very subject, was that no one wanted to play Bluefield because they felt that Bluefield has a tendancy to "run up the score" on some opponents. He said this is a fairly "state-wide" opinion of Bluefield as well. Several games were mentioned...playoff games where they scored over 60 points (Webster Co.) and a couple of playoff games from the late 90's where Bluefield scored 70, blowout games against certain out-manned schools (Man and Wyoming East), and games where Bluefield was obviously the better team but wanted to "prove" something to others (Liberty-Raleigh, Oak Hill, Shady Spring, Mount View, Wayne). He also said that if Shady Spring still had the coach they had last season, they wouldn't have Bluefield on the schedule this year. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the one saying these things. These are quotes from WV Coaches who have talked with this certain WV Official. I can see his point to some degree...if you know you are going to take an ass-whipping, why even schedule the game? He also said that this is the main reason that they can't get a "Conference" for football going in AA in southern WV...and if they do, Bluefield would not be invited to join. He added, don't be suprised if that scenario plays out in the near future...several schools creating a conference in football with enough teams to fill out a 10-game schedule and Bluefield not being part of it. He did mention names...Westside, Wyoming East, Iaeger, Mount View, Logan, Independence, Liberty-Raleigh, Oak Hill, Shady Spring, Summers Co., and PikeView. WOW! Talk about making it difficult for Bluefield to even make a schedule for football. That would also leave James Monroe in a tough position as well...HMMM, didn't they used to run it up on lots of teams too??? I'm not sure what, when, or if anything will happen, but Bluefield and James Monroe better start looking out for the best interest or this could turn into one HUGE problem for both schools.
  24. The way I see it...the baseballs are juiced so why not let the players get juiced??? Also, they should allow pitchers to use the grease, a file, or anything else that will make their pitches harder to hit. Then, they need to move the fences back to about 500 feet and let the hitters use aluminum bats. And since the fields will be larger by doing that, they should move the bases further apart, add an extra infielder and two more outfielders.
  25. First game between the two was 14-1. Yesterday's game, 18-1, Graham... BDT HS Baseball Scoreboard
