Subject: "That league's in trouble."
Posted by: Will Stewart on Thu Nov 18 2004 9:56:42 AM
Message:
I was in BW3's last night, and the ESPN crew and Burnop and Roth were all there. Most of them left early, but Roth hung around and talked for a while.
One of the things we discussed was the Big East. Roth told me that Jake Crouthamel resigned from Syracuse yesterday (see Hokie News).
He said that since the ACC snubbed the Cuse, both the school president (Buzz Shaw) and now the AD have resigned.
Roth also said that last week's de facto Big East championship game of BC and WVU wasn't even on TV in Philly and NYC. He mentioned that the Big East football TV contract with ABC is in arbitration, and could be renegotiated to as low as $5 million per year from its
current $15 million or so. (We had heard $7-$8 million before).
"That league's in trouble," he said, and I agree. And Bill didn't say this with any pleasure, of course. He worked that league for over 10 years, has a lot of personal relationships in it, and is a Syracuse grad.
Just a reminder that that could have been us, folks. Never forget that. And while I have no love for the Big East, its schools, and its administrators (both at the AD and presidential level), I do have some sympathy for the fans of some proud programs that will not enjoy the next few years, or beyond.
Part II of the post regarding TV & $$$$$...
Subject: BTW, let me point out some numbers.

Under the ACC's new football TV contracts, they'll be earning $37.6 million a year from ESPN/ABC and $4 million a year from JP-Raycom, for a total of $41.6 million per year.
The Big East is staring at $5 million a year.
WOW. The ACC will get almost as much from JP-Raycom as the Big East will get from ESPN/ABC.
THANK YOU ACC!!!!!!!!!!!

I doubt Adibi will get that assignment...true, he's a great player but he hasn't quite gotten his cover skills to the level that he can cover Miller. He will be utilized more in stopping the run and pressuring the QB...

CavDad,
The Bassett coach emailed me and said the game was moved due to the forecast on Saturday...had nothing to do with another event.
Yes, the game was originally scheduled for Saturday because of the Monday game that Bassett played. However, they felt OK with moving the game to Friday because their starters got lots of rest Monday after jumping out to a 21-0 1st quarter lead against Dan River.
I hope everyone makes it Friday as well...that's the reason I've posted and tacked this message at the top of the board.
-
You are right but I was just wanting folks to get there early! LOL
-

Good job on the numbers...would have done it last night but fell asleep watching Memphis-So. Miss....woke up this morning and came to work.
BTW...who won that game?
-
G.W.-Halifax Co., ppd, Saturady, 12 Noon
E.C. Glass-Franlin Co., ppd, Saturday, 7 PM
Bassett-Dan River, ppd, Monday, 7 PM
-
Yeh, you can't overlook UVA's "layered depth"!!! LOL
-
Vic Hall brought his game to a mudpit last year...Mitchell Stadium...didn't seem to slow him down. Actually, the muddy field hurt Graham more than it did Gretna. That was probably the worst I've ever seen Mitchell Stadium's field since the '89 Graham-Rustburg State-Semi.
-
Don't forget about those big wins over FAMU and Duke!
At this point who cares what the margin of victory is...in the words of Al Davis...JUST WIN BABY!!!
-
B_R...that is exactly what I was going to say when I read his post! I wish people would become a little more informed before taking up valuable space on the message board...

The VHSL has released the latest ratings and the four teams that will represent Region D, D-1 are J.I. Burton, Twin Springs, Twin Valley, and Hurley. Pound finished a "close" 5th behind Hurley.
-
Twin Valley is in the playoffs...check the website tomorrow for more details...

Graham still has a chance to get in the playoffs even if Martinsville wins.
Graham currently has 168 points with the possibility of 2 more IF Blacksburg beats Christiansburg (at Blacksburg).
Graham will finish with either 168 or 170 points.
Martinsville currently has 141 points and can earn 22 points with a victory over Patrick Co.
Martinsville is guaranteed points from the following games
Magna Vista-Tunstall (at Magna Vista)...1 pt. if Magna Vista wins, 2 pts. if Tunstall wins
Bassett-Dan River (at Dan River)...1 pt. if Bassett wins, 2 pts. if Dan River wins
Martinsville can also receive bonus points from the following games...
2 pts. if Rustburg beats Brookville (at Rustburg)
1 pt. if Franklin Co. beats E.C. Glass (at E.C. Glass)
1 pt. if Heritage beats Amherst Co. (at Amherst Co.)
1 pt. if Giles beats Glenvar (at Giles)
2 pts. if Halifax Co. beats G.W.-Danville (at Halifax Co.)
Martinsville is guaranteed to have 165 pts. with a win on Friday, with a possibility of 7 more bonus points.
G.W. should easily handle Halifax Co. eliminating any chance for 2 pts.
Graham fans need to pull for Blacksburg, Magna Vista, Bassett, Brookville, E.C. Glass, Amherst Co., and Glenvar to win this Friday for the G-Men to have any chance at making the post season.
If the two teams end up tied with the same number of points, Martinsville will win the tiebreaker and make the playoffs.
-
Virginia High is in regardless...they won the Highlands.
Martinsville bombed Dan River tonight and still has Patrick Co. left...pretty much a sure victory. If Martinsville loses to PC...it will still be very close.
BTW...Tazewell won.
-
ZERO...it is now basketball season in Bluefield, VA...
