  1. Has any actually candidates came foward or are any known at this point? Also, any word on where Adams is heading from here?
  2. Giles runs a set of the single wing that basically is perfectly planned choas. Steve runs Harry's old plays to this day and they still work like a charm, with deception being the name of the game. A lot of cross-bucks in there and vertually every passing play comes out looking like a trick play. Very few plays are direct snaps and straight point of attack runs. But with this deception, if you don't have a smart MLB and a strong d-line able to hold their own, you can out talent them all you want and you're still gonna give up yards from not knowing exactly what your reads are. JM and Craig Co. though, the oppisite end of the spectrum. Direct snap back to TB, and usually follow the pulling guard. Throw in a hand off to the FB and playaction to the FB to keep the defense on their toes. If there's fakes, with JM especially, it was usually a bootleg right. I feel like I just described WVU's offense. And basically, that's what JM appears to run. A shotgun - 1 back set with a Blocking Back rather than a split reciever. Very simplistic compared to the Giles way, but it still works when you have the hogs up front to block and the boys in the backfield to hit the holes. Usually though, when you're outmanned as far as talent, this simple style will get you in trouble. EX: JM and Bluefield. Another point completely different: I found out Giles has added Grundy to their schedule. They dropped Twin Valley to pick them up. And from what I can tell, Grundy will come to Pearisburg first unless someother team on Giles' schedule agreed to come to Pearisburg for the second year in a row. That should be very interesting to see. Hopefully, Narrows will have a off-week that week and I can go check that out.
  3. I know Craig County runs a very similar set of the single wing to James Monroe. But to be honest, I don't really consider the Craig and JM version the single wing. If it is, it is a VERY stripped down set. No where near as smooth or deadly as Giles' set or Narrows' set back in the 60's, which is pretty much the exact same thing.

  5. I don't know about the whole weeding out thing. The last time I remember a team making the playoffs with a losing record was in '94. Blacksburg finished 4-6 and won the last New River District championship. The only teams they had to beat was Christiansburg and Carroll Co. They ended up winning Region 3 Division 4 with a win over Richlands in BBurg. They lost in the next round but still not too bad for a team that finished the season with a total record of 6-7.
  6. The number 3 (Council),4 (Riverheads), and 5 (Narrows) teams in VA A ball have lost this week since the new poll has come out. Council obviously to Twin Springs, Riverheads to Bath County and Narrows at Eastern Montgomery. Looks like Radford moving up to no less than 4th next week.
  7. I've seen them twice and I'm thinking coaching completely up the ranks needs overhauled at JM. What got me was that in both games I saw, the varsity head coach didn't have a clue on how to slow down the tempo of a game. Now whether he just wanted to run or not I don't know but I'm thinking this team would be much better suited with a slow game.
  8. I thought I saw something on the news last week about the closing of the schools being postponed until the plan for consolidation could be further reviewed. I saw this on channel 7 sometime last week.
  9. How about A? I haven't seen it at all in any local paper.
  10. *Roanoke Times writeup* Narrows 63, Giles 42 In Pearisburg, Joe Kinzer scored 31 points as the host Green Wave took a 14-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Brandon Martin contributed 14 points for Narrows (7-1). Marcus Haynie led Giles (5-5) with 12 points. NARROWS (63) St. Clair 3, Farley 5, Patel 2, Brandon Martin 14, Akers 8, Joe Kinzer 31. 11. Roanoke Times write-up: Narrows 74, James Monroe 55 Senior Brandon Martin had a career night as he led the hot-shooting Green Wave to an easy win over visiting James Monroe from West Virginia. Martin finished with 24 points including four 3-pointers for Narrows (5-0), which as a team shot 11-for-22 for 3-point range. Joe Kinzer added 12 rebounds. Tanre Franklin had 16 for James Monroe (0-4). James Monroe (55) Franklin 16, Woods 10, Eggleston 1, Robertson 2, Comer 3, Payne 9, Harvey 2, Miller 4, Canterbury 4, Miller 4. 12. Having went to school there for only one year and a fan for a few years, I still have sort of a outsiders point of view of VA High athletics. And it strikes me that they seem to have the same attitude as Grayson Co. Basically, as long as baseball does well then it's a good year. Anything else is just extra gravy for the taters so to speak. I know they have the talent year in and year out. The football team is finally starting to show some of that. The whole attitude of the community and majority of the fan base still holds everything back from progressing. I've got a firm believe that Coach Adams is turning things around in football slowly but surely. Football is just not something you can turn around for good in a year or two anyways. But I think the problems for the down sports all have different reasons. Basketball, yes I'll go with coaching, only because of the system. A fast paced, up and down the court style would suit them a whole lot better I think because of their continual lack of size. Now, with track, simply the facilities. It's a health hazard to runners to run on their own track.
  13. Everybody seemed to contribute their part in this one. This was obviously the best shooting performance the Green Wave have had up to this point in the year. Chastin Akers, Wes Underwood, and Jake Lewis were the main contributers tonight with either a lot of offense or defense or both. Great game all in all and waiting for Floyd to come to Narrows on Thursday. On another note, the girls game between Narrows and James Monroe was rescheduled to January 12th due to the weather.
  14. I'd would say you're best bet would actually be microfilm archives at local libraries. You might wanna check the collecetion at VT's library. They have a very extensive catalog there. All other archives I can think of like the one you would be looking for are on subscrition biases and don't go nearly that far back. (Roanoke Times for example)
  15. The Green Wave started out on a 7-2 run and never looked back. Jake Lewis and Brandon Martin came up big in the first half with both defense and their shooting on the perimeter. Narrows was up somewhere between 25-30 points mid-way through the 3rd quarter before Coach Lusk emptied the bench. Jon Butler, Wes Underwood, and Chastin Akers also all played very good games in this highly physical and emotional game. I'll have stats and Roanoke write up on here tomorrow.
  16. HAHA You know it will. Hell, it took a act of congress just for them to look at the BCS system to begin with!
  17. They came to Narrows and showed that it was a reloading year. Narrows won 60-46 after leading by double digits since half way through the second quarter. James Monroe's last lead was late in the first quarter before Narrows tipped on one in at the last second of the quarter to take a 13-12 lead. Narrows simply won this game with solid shooting and a patient offense that always seemed to settle for the best shot availible and with killin the Lady Mavs on the boards. If JM can figure out how to rebound again they'll be fine. They still seem to have pretty good guard play but seem to have problems with pressure defenses like Narrows threw at them.
  18. 13-8 heres the link to the Roanoke Times story... http://www.roanoke.com/roatimes/news/story159549.html
  19. 1) How about the Super Bowl's in the cold weather cities. Albeit, in domes and also Super Bowl IX in New Orleans between Steelers and Vikings. How about Palo Alto in January of 85 between 49ers and Dolphins and the fog. 2) No. I don't consider them a complete team because they weren't able to do what they needed to when they needed it in order to get the job done. For example, '96 Florida and '93 Florida St. won NC's with mainly "throw'em deep" big play offfenses. However, they were able to run the ball when needed, especially FSU with William Floyd. 3) It doesn't matter what kinda speed I got because I'm not outthere to win individual awards. It's what my team can do that important. My suggestion is find a dome or quit complaining.
  20. My point is a state champ can run the football when the conditions warrant it. And if a team deserves a state title, then they'll make the proper adjustments on defense to get the win. Pure and simple. If you want, petition the proper people to have the state title games moved to Johnson City, TN too so you can stay out of the cold while your at it. And yes I threw JC out there just to make a point.
  21. I remember quite a few super bowls in cold weather states and in bad weather no less... I don't care what excuses people come up with, playing in the weather is part of football. I mean, college games are played in mud also. If a recruit is there to watch a particular player, 99% of the time they've already seen a lot of tape on the kid. And where will it end??? Every team in the country thats worth anything will have to win at least one game in incliment conditions through out the year. Another point, for example you got a pass happy team that got there with great speed on the outside and throwin it deep but can't win the state title because of a torn up field then they don't deserve it anyway because they weren't a complete team that was able to do whatever it took to win at the time. If you're worried about tearing up the field bad enough, then have the games split up like in VA and got with that. I've been to 3 state title games at Ladley (watching Peterstown back in the early 90's) in Chareston and personally I would like to see a mudbath than a game played on concrete anyday. Also, why in the hell do you wanna make a team play the biggest game of their life on a surface they've never played on before??? That concept alone boggles my mind.
  22. Narrows over came a 7 point deficit to start the 4th to pull out to win late in a non-district home game. Plagued with turnovers, they trailed most of the game. East Mont got in late foul trouble as a team and Narrows shot their way back in it with free throws and forced several East Mont turnovers and also was able to convert them into points most of the time. It was a great game to watch all in all and can't wait for the rematch in Elliston.
  23. I can say that us on the VA side of the border are lucky in that regard. About the only situation like that over here happened in Bland Co with the consolidation of all sports. Although I'm fairly sure most people saw it coming sooner or later when Bland Co. started up a football program in the late 80's - early 90's. Luckily, fan support hasn't seemed to change very much at all in comparison with old Peterstown and Oakvale High's. Hopefully, it will stay that way.
  24. Hard fought, and sometimes nasty game. Gretna started with a 20-0 lead before the first quarter was over and Graham couldn't over come it. Graham cut to 27-22 halfway through the 4th quarter but couldn't capitalize on a interception they got deep in their own end of the field.
