  1. jeez my man...naming an exact score is kind of what you would call a 'figure of speech'. the point is...bassett was much, much better than graham. a team like tunstall, whose not-so-great record i gave above, actually led bassett at halftime in one of their games. their two games with bassett were a lot closer than the 23 point shellacking graham took at home to the bengals. i'm in no way trying to degrade ghs or their kids, i'm just using like opponents and arriving at a somewhat logical conclusion....again, it's my opinion that graham is likely in trouble the first game they play outside of a swd opponent. i'm not questioning their manhood, doubting their abilities, talking trash, etc. etc. etc. Only stating an opinion. that out of district record gman posted for the entire swd speaks VOLUMES. especially considering a bunch of those games (wins and losses) came against single a competition. and this just in about lee...while they are one of the best teams in aa again this year, they're not nearly as good as they have been in the past. so the game against draft isn't a big shocker. they've had several games in the last month or so where they had to pull one out in the 4th quarter. NEWSFLASH - AA basketball as a whole is down this season as opposed to recent years.
  2. to take it one step further... patrick county finished the season 4-19 overall (0-8 in the piedmont). the cougars beat carroll county twice - once by 10 and once by 15. graham beat carroll by 6 and by 12. i just think graham is probably in trouble as soon as they step out of the swd.
  3. i like your thinking GMan. i was told by a pretty good source that bassett could've just about named the score the night they won by 20 something down at graham. the bengals were that much better. and i think just about everyone would admit that this is a definite down year in the piedmont. i could easily see graham as the swd's top seed losing to a team like tunstall in the opening round of regionals if they got matched up...and tunstall finished the year 5-15 (3-7 in the piedmont). i don't know the brackets or who gets byes or whatever, but tunstall will likely get graham or cave.
  4. so they're still not the tallest midget?!? that one still makes me laugh.
  5. Jefferson Forest 38, Bassett 18 Patrick County 47, Magna Vista 18 Martinsville 11, Tunstall 0
  6. sad indeed...i was talking to someone just today and said with confidence that MHS's enrollment was in the neighborhood of 850. and that's down from the high 800s it has been within the last 4-5 years. to my surprise it's down under 800 now. one plus might be that there aren't many teams in the new proposed AA classification that could even stay close in the first half with a mavahi basketball team.
  7. this site says the dogs were fifth going into last night.... behind tazewell, patrick, richlands and cave. 3 of those 4 lost though.
  8. martinsville comes out slow, but wins 28-14. mhs only had 24 or 25 guys in uniform tonight. a starting wr/db (and soccer goalie) is likely done for the season as i heard he had a broken jaw. two brothers, one of which is a starting lb and plays some tailback, weren't in uniform tonight. lots of questions going forward into next week...not a good thing as the dogs are trying to play their way into the d3 playoff picture.
  9. there were only 4 home games scheduled this year b/c of a dropped return game from last year. the first two have been played on saturdays. the other 2 home games are the last 2 weeks of the season against bassett on 10/31 and patrick county on 11/7. the old lights were taken down weeks ago. from what i've driven by and seen, the work started on the new lights about 8 or 10 days ago. i think the plan is to have everything in place and hooked back up to play those last 2 weeks at dan greene.
  10. yea, cave will likely lose their last 6 games. but since they'll be mostly against d4 teams that have multiple wins, their power rating won't drop that fast. graham, marion or martinsville have good shots at moving into their spot before the end of the season with a few more wins.
  11. so much for that....i just read on ncpreps that mchmichael (nc) beat bassett tonight.
  12. harris is listed as 5'10 180...and here's an impressive excerpt from the roanoke times... More rare than a pro athlete in these parts is a youngster with Harris' speed. Roanoke's Edge Sports Performance Center listed Harris with the fastest 40-yard dash time in a SPARQ (speed, power, agility, reaction, quickness) testing combine in March at 4.28 seconds.
  13. i've told a few folks who've asked that the dogs have about the best group of starters that they've had in several years (just my opinion)...at least this early in the season. the running game is especially solid. problem is, at least 5 or 6 of those guys are starters on both sides of the ball. depth is a big issue. mhs led gretna 14-0 early and 14-12 at half, only to give up a bunch in the 2nd half. they killed rustburg early and then gave up some 2nd half points that made the game a little bit closer. they led the entire game at mchmichael only to fold in the end. they were tied with liberty at the half and fell apart. but yesterday, it finally looked like a complete game. halifax beat heritage pretty bad just last week, so one would think that was a pretty good squad that mhs beat soundly. and oh yeah, which side are you sitting on next friday night?!?! i've got plenty of extra bulldog gear if you need some! :-)
  14. mvhs has played a brutal schedule...both this year and last. especially considering that they are in 'rebuilding' mode. carlisle may come calling on some of his guys during the offseason. with all the losses the warriors have been enduring, it wouldn't be surprising to see some of the kids jump ship. a couple already left before this season. the chiefs will lose a lot of their 'recruited' players to graduation this year, so all 3 of the local publics may be targeted.
  15. well, sort of... Martinsville led all night at McMichael (NC), only to give up a late TD and the lead at 17-16 with about 4 1/2 - 5 mins to play. The Bulldogs then pound the ball down the field and had a 3 and 1 from the 2 with about 90 seconds to play. The give goes to the upback, he stretches for the TD near the goal line and puts the ball on the ground...turnover. They run the clock out...game over. Unbelievable.
  16. no clue as to why you quoted me and then went on to talk about floyd county being no slouch. i made no mention of floyd. they beat a solid john harris led patrick county squad, so i'm sure they're a pretty good team. just to make it easier for you to understand, my only point was that i think it was a bit presumptuous of trigger up above to say that patrick should be expected to only lose to bassett the rest of the year. in fairness to trigger, though, that's his opinion and i can live with it.
  17. You may very well be right with your prediction, but Patrick does have to play on the road at Martinsville this year...Martinsville's got a pretty solid group of starters this year. MHS came out as flat as ever, laid an absolute egg in Stuart last year, and still almost came out of there with the win. Even though it's a home game, playing a team like William Byrd is never a gimme. And for that matter, Botetourt gave Hidden Valley all they wanted, so I'd be hesitant to chalk a game like that up as an easy W either. John Harris is definitely a man amongst boys, but like you mentioned....if they can't pass the ball people will continue to load the box and key on the run.
  18. patrick's game against north stokes was actually a scrimmage...their record stands at 1-0 at this point.
  19. martinsville will be fine. they'll have quite the 1-2 punch in the backfield with rising sophomore marquill eggleston and rising junior javon tarpley (who missed last year due to injury). i've heard that the number of guys in the preseason strength and conditioning sessions is way way up.
  20. what a crock...the vhsl continues to not get it. the article over on preps does mention possibly making a better move and going to a 5 classification system. the only problem is that i think it said that can't be done until at least 2010-2011.
  21. Joe Favero appointed head coach Friday, March 7, 2008 The Henry County School Board approved Joe Favero as the new head football coach at Magna Vista High School on Thursday night. Favero will succeed Kenny Moran, who stepped in for John Curia at the start of the 2007 season. Favero has been employed by the Henry County School System since 2002. He also has been the defensive coordinator for Bassett High School for four years and offensive coordinator for one year. During his time at Bassett the team won four Piedmont District championships and two Region IV titles. He has also served as the varsity boys soccer coach since 2003. Favero was unable to attend Thursday’s meeting due to a soccer game. A statement was released in his absence. “I believe in a culture of strong character, commitment and competition,†he stated in the release. “I have enjoyed being a part of the many successes of the Bassett High School football team and look forward to the opportunity to be the next head football coach for the Magna Vista Warriors.†In addition to coaching, Favero will teach physical education at Magna Vista.
  22. [ QUOTE ] 4. Admission Fee: $5.00 [/ QUOTE ] i paid $6 at the district finals AT BASSETT. then i paid only $5 for the opening round of regionals AT MARTINSVILLE. then bassett charged $7 for the regional quarterfinals AT BASSETT the other night. their reasoning was that it was a "doubleheader"...with the girls game first. even though i'd rather watch paint dry than watch a high school girls game.
  23. i agree that the entire system needs an overhaul. but in this particular case...the records of the teams they showed in the article were bad, but they all won at least a couple games. the attitude of "if i can't win all the time i'll just take my ball and go somewhere else" is just another unpleasant reminder of the world we live in. how's that song go? it was a different life when we were boys and girls.
  24. this makes my stomach turn "We're not giving our kids any experience in those sports," she said. "They're not getting any experience winning." so it's all about winning? having already watered down the football championships, now we've watered down the basketball championships with divisions in single A. AA is sure to be next. besides the vhsl's love for money, it's all a product of making sure little johnny and susie get a trophy. losing is not the end of the world. to me it should only be a motivational tool to make you want to work even harder to get better!
  25. you need to take that up with the gman
