  1. On 8/12/2018 at 10:18 AM, Bluefield researcher said:

Coach Carlock told me himself that he picked the Redskins colors because he was fan. "Pigg" designed the G-Star.

The late Ray Brooks designed the G Star.  He was a TV personality on the WHIS TV (now WVVA).  Formerly a member of Snoop and Scoop fame.

  2.

In the scrimmage each team was given 10 plays on offense to work their first squads against the other team’s first squad defense. After a swap, the second units faced off for five plays. Players were substituted early and often throughout the contest.

The junior varsity Cougars took the field first, facing off with Bluefield. Each team scored a touchdown in the contest. The Cougars faced off with Magna Vista in their final session, scoring one touchdown while allowing none by the Warriors. The other JV contest saw the Bluefield squad run over Magna Vista, scoring multiple touchdowns.

The varsity portion of the day started with the Cougars facing Magna Vista. Senior quarterback Kade Akers connected with Kent State bound E.J. Horton on a long touchdown pass that was called back and later Akers ran for what appeared to be another touchdown, extending the ball across the goal line and knocking the pylon down, but the official ruled it out of bounds. Senior Noah O’Dell also had a catch and sophomore running back Jakari Finley, junior Gage Mannon and junior Luke Russell had good runs throughout the day.

In their second scrimmage the Cougars faced Bluefield. More ground game by Finley and Mannon, along with a pass from Akers to Horton were good signs, but neither of teams first units were able to score. The Beavers were able to score a late touchdown with their second unit offense.

With the controlled portion of the day ended, the three teams went to a more game-like situation. The Cougars started against Magna Vista. Their opening drive was a mix of running and passing that ended when Akers hit Horton for a four-yard scoring pass. Ryan Castle hit the point after kick to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead.

Magna Vista got the ball next, but the Cougar defense took over on downs quickly. One of the few mistakes of the day came when a pass from Cougar junior quarterback Chris Shay was picked off at the Cougar 45-yard line. The Cougar defense again held strong, getting the ball back for the offense.

After a Pulaski County punt, the Warriors tried to push the ball in for the tying score, but the Cougar defense stepped up again, breaking up a pass on fourth down and goal to end the game.

In the final matchup of the day the Cougars faced off again with Bluefield. Both teams showed  solid ground attacks and passing games, but neither was able to put the ball into the endzone until the Beavers scored late against the Cougar second defensive unit.

  3. Our special teams has been hurting us this year. Charlotte Latin returned the opening kickoff for a TD last week if i'm not mistaken.

You are not mistaken and it looked like an instant replay to me. Both went down the home side line to the house. De ja vue all over again as Yogi Berra says. That bunched kick off that the Beavers use leaves them vulnerable to a return unless the kicker can really "place" the ball where it needs to go.

  4. not a bad thing, maybe the kids will use the chin straps more now.

There has always been a rule in high school football that requires the use of chinstraps. No official would ever let a play start with either a chinstrap unfastened or a mouth piece dangling. The problem is that a lot of programs do not know how to properly fit the kid for a headgear and the suspension is either over inflated or under inflated. I think this new rule will hopefully correct that and both coaches and players will recognize the importance of a properly fitted head gear.

  5. Congrats to the Blues they have a tremendous program and I am sorry to see their season end earlier than they would have liked. I would, however. like to offer a independent observation from an outsider looking in.

I did not see the game nor did I even see Richlands play all year other than in a preseason scrimmage, but it seems to me that they need to beef up their schedule and face teams that have speed and talent in the regular season. Trying to cope with this when you only get to see it in the playoffs is very difficult at best. Virginia is a big state and you ARE going to encounter it some time if you play long enough so why not do it early when you have a chance to make some adjustments. Just my opinion for what it is worth.

  6. Wow what a mess! I hate to see these type things happen to any program. If Tate does leave, and I hope he does not, how would you ever find another coach of any quality to step into this hornet's nest? Everyone should certainly hope and pray that Coach Tate stays on and turns this mess around or else it could really get ugly.

  7. I heard a while back when jack harry(r.i.p) was going to put up money for a turf field that the field at tazewell wasn't big enough to fit it? I don't know if that's true, or if iy even makes sense but that's what I was told. Then I heard a rumor about bermuda grass?

Not big enough for a turf??? What? The field is the same size either way! That makes no sense at all. If you got room for grass you got room for turf.

  8. my point exactly and well said uvaobserver. no matter how you look at it getting blown out of a game when a team has the game well in hand only has the effect of teams not wanting to continue the games in the future, points or no points. and i do not think that ghs playing beaver has ever hurt ghs in the point system over the years when carlock was alive and coaching. seems ghs made the playoffs many years even when beaver beat ghs. so saying rhs would not benifit from playing beaver because of the points i do not think is a real valid point when rhs is playing single a teams in va. they need to get off their respective cans and start playing blfd. otherwise people will always say rhs is afraid to play them on a regular basis. wether or not that is the reason or not it will look that way to many.

Gate City won the State Championship last year despite losing to the Beavers in mid season. So it certainly does not hurt anything to play them it looks like.
