Ryan, the Ole saying is that Defense wins ball games, and RHS obviously
Did just that, and won. Good game plan. On the other hand the school that
that played GC did not play much defense, and still won. Go figure.Best of
Luck to Richlands and Gate City Saturday. Stay healthy guys and play with
A great deal of Pride.
On a different note, the McClung athlete from GC; How would you rate him next
To Calvin Talford, and Trazell Silvers. That goes a little ways back, and the
Game has changed somewhat since their day, but both were very good players.
I watch Talford put 76 on Chilhowie one night at Castlewood, with about 12
Throw downs and cartwheel dunks. He was no fluke at the D1 level. He played
Above the rim!
ETSU was a 14 seed that year, Arizona was a 3 seed. ETSU had Talford, Mr
Jennings, Story and Rodney English, and a solid bench. Coach Olson from
Arizona team just could Not do much against State's quickness and athletes.
It was 87 to 80 ETSU. I think that was 1992.
I got to know States recruiter back then, and State signed Greg
Belcher from Chilhowie as a shooting guard. State's coaching
Changes took it's toll on Belcher in just two years.

Talford was the best from this area i ever saw, Mac is the same kind of athlete, but a smaller guy at 6'2', Calvin was 6'4" and probably the best all around athlete, he was a track star and a basketball star, i think he played one year of football and was all-state. Mac was a great receiver as a freshman and no doubt in my mind could play D1 receiver. Silvers was 6'7' or so and totally not that kind of athlete, although a really good player. Clavin dominated the SOCON on a very good ETSU team, when he got hurt one year ETSU was ranked in the mid to low teens and they ended up getting a very low seed the comittee said it would have been a 5 or 6 seed with him, i think that may have been the year they lost to the fab 5 of Michigan. For you young punks :) go to youtube and look up Calvin Talford, he won the NCAA dunk contest his senior year that they hold during final four weekend.
Those were the Glory Days of the SWD....and it was brutal!
You ain't kidding brother! The travel alone was brutal for other sports besides football, going to Grundy, Graham from GC for a weekday basketball or baseball game then getting back in the middle of the night was "fun".
In football you better not lose 2 games or the playoffs were out. I remember one year in the early 80's when GC was 8-2, lost to Abingdon, and Graham in close games and beat 9-0 Tazewell 7-2 in the 10th game. I think they all finished 9-1
Anybody alive that remembered 70s Clintwood or GC?
Lol wasn't sure how far you guys wanted to go back. 1970 GC Phil Rogers and his Brother Stan, FB Don Frazier Line was huge for that time. Phil went to VT played QB with Tiki and Ronde's fatherJames playing RB. As an option QB was still VT's all-time leading rusher until Cyrus Lawrence came along in the early 80's. Phil was the best high school back i ever saw. I only saw Thomas once in high school live, was gone in the military during that time.
1974 GC Mickey Rogers (299 yds on 14 carries against Amherst in 74 semis, GC won 71-18?) LB Dennis Wolfe went to UT was 3year starter and defensive captain, Rick Begley OL/DL strongest man ever at GC went to Vandy, Rick Shoemaker OL played at ETSU.
Clintwood mid 70's Johnny McFall RB very strong runner, may be one of the strongest runners i ever saw led them to 3 straight titles (his son was a pretty good RB at Jefferson Co a few years back)
1975 Martinsville was very good, Dennis Mahan was the fastest back i ever saw. Got to see him run all over the field against GC in the 75 semis as a soph?. i still have a magazine that was from 1977 that had him as a first team all american.
Blacksburg 1977 RB Mark Dymock? led them over GC in the regional.
Not SWVA but the 1978 Southampton team with Cyrus Lawrence (definitely the strongest runner i ever saw) and Ashley Lee
GC 97' Jake Houseright so fast for his size it wasn't fair.
it is an awesome win, and a great comeback. Unfortunately i really think the inability to run consistently is the one chink in the Richlands armor when the play teams with equal or better talent. Fortunately that doesn't happen very often for the Blues, maybe a few times each year. Congrats and hopefully they can pull one out in Salem. I think they will have their hands full with a very good Appomattox team.
it's a shame you can't get some of the D from Greg's teams with some of the offense from Scottie's they would be unbeatable. GC rarely got drilled by 30 when Greg was coach, although some games made you want to throw up 35-33 etc
Don't forget the 2002 George Wythe Maroons in the Division 2 State Semis versus Gate City. A VERY good Gate City team who was undefeated rolled into Wytheville and had to be a sizable favorite. George Wythe defeats Gate City in overtime and goes on to defeat Buckingham County for the Division 2 State Championship.
thanks DJ, could have gone most of my life without reliving that game over. A big difference is Appomattox isn't coming to Big Stone, and probably not a blizzard the night before. This isn't a knock on Union, i think Appomattox is really good and it will take a really well played game, and probably several mistakes by the home team to stay close. The Bears are good, and have the best player on the field. i hope they win but i expect an Appomattox win by 3-4 td's. i saw where one poster said to throw, that may work, but Giles throws so little it is nearly a shock when they do, so i wouldn't put too much stock in 3 wide open guys. I don't put much stock in predictions on vapreps or Espn, etc.. most of us had the Bears penciled in to the finals last year, we saw what happened there. So my opinion, while important to me, matters very little to Appomattox and Union. Go Bears!
This game really intrigues me, i too want to see if Union shows up, they can rely too much on one player at times (he darn near single handedly beat GC) but what a player to lean on. I hope they bring a victory back home to SWVA.
I saw Appo play several times (film) last year, and twice this year. I haven't seen Giles play, i hope they pull the stunner, but i think Appomattox will win by 3 td's or more. Their line looks really good, the rest of the team swarms to the ball. Amherst isn't terrible and Appo could have killed them (up 36-6) before they called off the dogs.
Great job by the devils all year, never say die attitude even when over matched. Proud of these kids. Collier had a great career with over 100 tds and close to 9,000 yds. He was fun to watch.
5-6 doesn't look good but they were 5-1 the last six.
Blue Devils stack up Leonard short of the first down at the 30 yd line. Hamilton and Collier back for GC. Devil ball at the 49 with 1:22 left in the game
devils only have one timeout left, Leonard gets about 4 yards bring up 3rd and 5. GC timeout with 2:07 left. IF GC gets the stop we will have at least a minute to try and score.
