  1. Even though you may not have a problem with it, there are MANY people who do, myself included. And there are enough who care for this to blow up to epic proportions. Congress was very well within their rights to get involved here. Using steroids is highly illegal, obviously. And the illegal trafficking of steroids is a BIG issue in interstate commerce. Congress has the powers to tax and spend, and in no uncertain terms has the "power of the pursestrings" granted it by the Constitution. This is easily within Congress's domain, though what the public sees is: "Oh no, they're coming after our baseball players, what's the country coming to?!?!" But the basis is valid.
  2. Haha, Gore was flagrantly misquoted on that. His words were exactly, and I quote: "I helped to create the internet". Which he truly did: he threw a LOT of his weight behind the technological initiatives of the late-1980s through late-1990s. Back when people actually listened to him. Now, Gore just sounds stark raving loony and misguided. I wish Gore were half the man he was 10 years ago.
  3. Great post, TBG. Laughably, New York is the only state in this great Union that does not have a fully-functioning legislature. We have a large NY contingency at the Dickinson Scool of Law, and they're by-and-large absolutely livid with how poor the New York General Assembly is. In lawyer speak, we'd say that "the public policy interest furthered by the New York legislature is not substantially related to the activity the statute is seeking to prohibit." In common speak, we'd say that "this law's stupid, we're big boys, we can handle it." I'd love to bring a challenge against this statute in state court.
  4. I have typed much upon the subject in other threads. I have just three things to say after reading the posts: 1. The Democrat-controlled 109th Congress passed the least amount of legislation from a Congress since the Spanish-American War. 2. Obama's cabinet = laughably poor. Much like his first month in office. 3. There is enough pork in the Obama stimulus package to serve this nation bacon for 8 years. 4. Priming the economy by getting $1T more in debt = dumb, dumb dumb dumb dumb!
  5. I apologize for not responding to the litany of posts earlier, my fiancee was in town this weekend, and I just couldn't get to a computer in time. But I think this post right here hits the nail on the head. I really couldn't say it any better myself, with regards to fandom or Simmons. To respond to Hokie07. If my child gets denied from UVA and goes to JMU (which I hope he'd/she'd do anyway if they have an inclination toward liberal arts, but I digress), then I firmly believe that JMU should be their school. In fact, if they're rejected from UVA, that really should add a little more "fuel on the fire" to distance themselves from UVA, one would think. I know if I hadn't received the acceptance letter from UVA the day after I received it from VT, I'd probably be a bigger UVA-hater than anyone on this board. Yes, even you, GMan, LOL. I hope I'm hitting the crux of the debate here, as I don't have the full text of the post right in front of me. Bandwagoning just looks very suspicious when one school is very good in football, another school is very good in basketball, and neither school is very good in the area the other is very good in. Wanting cake, eating it too, etc.
  6. A big accomplishment, but I have very mixed feelings on Summitt. Especially that hack job that cost UVA the 1991 Women's national title.
  7. When in the **** did Ralph Friedgen get enough clout to name his successor? Friedgen should be worried about not getting canned for too many mediocre seasons. The man won ONE ACC title nearly a decade ago. Bobby Bowden? OK. Joe Paterno? Sure. Even Frank Beamer? Go for it. Ralph Friedgen? LOL.
  8. The USOC has always had the requisite anatomy of a field mouse. Absolutely ZERO effect in the long run. And I totally agree: the Kellogg's sponsorship withdrawal hits him where it hurts much more. Phelps's activities were mind-blowingly stupid. He shouldn't be doing it anyway, but if he does, make sure there are no cameras within a mile radius of where this is going on. It's not like this is Phelps's first time around the block, either. Phelps did apologize, but in the sort of "I'll say I'm sorry, but I don't really feel that way" sort of public face-saving motion. I say, go Kellogg's.
  9. Alex Rodriguez, 1996: http://www.hollywoodcollectibles.com/autographed/memorabilia/sports/collectibles/authentic/Baseball/Alex_Rodriguez_SI_MID.jpg Alex Rodriguez, 2008: http://www.sportable.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/arod.jpg I can sure tell the difference in these two. Baseball's becoming a complete and absolute sham. Start barring players for life upon the first positive test for anabolic steroids. That'd open some eyes, I guarantee it.
  10. I think WVU makes it. I think VT does not. The ACC is interesting this year. If all else goes according to plan, we have 4 locks in the ACC: UNC, Duke, Clemson, Wake. There are 4 teams fighting for spots 5-8: FSU, Miami, VT, BC. VT has the worst non-conference schedule (strongest opponent: Xavier; two ugly losses to Seton Hall and Georgia) and record among the 4 bubble teams. VT has a fair chance to end up 9-3 looking at their last 4 conference games (GT, @Mary, @UVA, FSU). They also have a great chance to end up 9-7 (@Clem, Duke, UNC, @FSU). I think 9-7 is the likely scenario for VT, though perhaps not in this order. This would leave the Hokies at 19-11 (9-7), having lost their last 4 (or 1-4 in their last 5 entering the ACC tournament, or something like this). A first round tournament victory is a MUST. Otherwise, that's VERY iffy for a bubble team, especially with some very strong mid-majors lurking if upsets come calling in the conference tournaments (see: Utah State). In short, I see VT being 7th in an ACC that has 6 teams invited to the Dance. And I don't know as much about WVU to comment on detailed specifics, though I do believe WVU will end up at 20-11 (9-9 BE). With a much more palatable OOC schedule than VT (losses to UK and Davidson, no real shame there), I think WVU makes the tournament based on their merits and the fact that they come from the Big East.
  11. Bravo, Georgia Tech. I'm glad to see them hold a player accountable for his actions.
  12. According to Bill Simmons' holy grail of sports fandom books, you're allowed to have exactly 1 favorite D-IA school. Namely, on the chance that Miami-LSU play each other, you'll feel conflicted on who to cheer for. By those same rules, you all but lose the fancard if you play the "I can't lose" game when they both play. Also, by these rules, if you root for a school that's been wildly successful in the past decade, you really need to have had ties to that place. For example, I have a friend who grew up not 2 blocks from the campus of UCLA. He went to UVA, and thereby traded in his fandom for UVA fandom. That's how it works. And that's why I give people a very hard time when they cheer for the Hokies in football and then cheer for UNC/Dook in basketball. BIG no-no in the book of fandom.
  13. You wouldn't be bandwagoning, would you? Especially considering we live 1000 miles from LA.
  14. You just did a better job than Corey Henderson could ever hope to do.
  15. Virginia got their biggest fish in Morgan Moses! I'm happy to keep him in-state (and away from VT). Here's the list of Virginia's targets/signees: http://www.thesabre.com/recruiting/signees/2009/ http://virginia.rivals.com/commitlist.asp?school=91 I'm thrilled about getting Moses and Aboushi on the line to compliment one another. Tim Smith is a GREAT WR prospect; hopefully, Ball State's OC knows how to use them. Dominique Wallace is a solid 4* fullback who could make some big inroads for our running game. 5 4* prospects in general, and a recruit ranking of 33 according to Rivals (if I recall correctly). Of course, I'd like it to be much better. But I won't complain with progress.
  16. I've been around the block a time or two, and even I thought these were tasteless. Now, the Cash4Gold.com commercial was absolute comedic gold (pardon the pun). MC Hammer and Ed McMahon.
  17. Morgan Moses to announce tomorrow at 1:00 PM, per my sources. And he's let out that he's going to be stay at Fork Union for a year. Again, per my sources.
  18. Early playing time was a huge sell to Moses. I don't see him prepping, whereever he goes. It's either UVA or UNC (according to the Rivals experts), and UNC fans seem to be unusually pessimistic about their chances. And he's said he's announcing tomorrow.
  19. Morgan Moses Morgan Moses Morgan Moses Morgan Moses Morgan Moses...
  20. This is a bit of a tweener for Pro Sports and General Discussion. I thought I'd post this quite humorous story here! http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/fromcomments/278448.php Comcast offers $10 credit to Tucson customers who saw Super Bowl porn By Brian J. Pedersen Arizona Daily Star Tucson, Arizona | Published: 02.02.2009 The pornographic content that interrupted thousands of local Comcast subscribers’ Super Bowl broadcast was the result of an “isolated malicious act,†a company spokeswoman said Monday. But company officials have yet to determine how that act was committed, spokeswoman Kelle Maslyn said, though any sort of equipment malfunction has been ruled out. “We did an extensive preliminary check on our technical systems, and everything appeared to be working properly when the incident occurred,†Maslyn said. In light of the incident, Comcast says it will issue a $10 credit to any customers who say they viewed the 30-second clip, which featured full male nudity. Meanwhile, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Phoenix said it is looking into the interruption, which lasted about 30 seconds, and featured full male nudity. “We take this matter seriously,†spokesman Wyn Hornbuckle said. “We’re working with appropriate agencies to review the incident.†One of those agencies, the Federal Communications Commission, was not aware of any formal complaints made regarding the porn clip, FCC media relations director David Fiske said Monday afternoon. It is still unclear how many viewers saw the clip, from a porn movie being shown on Shorteez, an adult cable channel offered by Comcast on a pay-per-view basis. Only Comcast subscribers who received a standard definition signal could see the clip, while those who watched the game on high-definition televisions were not affected, Maslyn said. Comcast is Southern Arizona’s second-largest cable subscriber, with more than 80,000 customers in unincorporated Pima County, Marana and Oro Valley. The Star newsroom was flooded with calls Sunday night from irate viewers who said that the porn cut into the game with less than three minutes left to play, just after Arizona Cardinals player Larry Fitzgerald scored on a touchdown pass from Kurt Warner to put the team in the lead. Callers said that the clip showed a woman unzipping a man’s pants, followed by a graphic act between the two. The Super Bowl was being shown locally on KVOA. The station sends its signals — both standard definition and high definition — to Cox Communications, which then sends the signals to Comcast, station president Gary Nielsen said. KVOA’s signal didn’t have porn on it when the station sent it over to Comcast, Nielsen said. He said his station has received no complaints from viewers who watched the game on Cox, on satellite providers such as DirecTV or Dish Network or from people who saw it through an over-the-air signal. “This did not emanate from us,†Nielsen said. “We are dismayed that this had to happen.†The porn clip was actually the second interruption Comcast’s standard definition subscribers saw, Maslyn said. A few minutes earlier, a short clip showing the closing credits of a movie on another adult channel, Club Jenna, were shown. Both Club Jenna and Shorteez are channels offered by Spice Entertainment, according to the Playboy TV Network’s Web site. Comcast has set up an e-mail account to take feedback from concerned customers. The address is comcasttucsonfeedback@gmail.com. Customers also can call 744-1900. Since first reporting on the story Sunday, various online updates posted by the Star on its Web site had received more than 173,000 page views on as of 1 p.m. Monday, online editor John Bolton said. 21. Barely an inch in Central PA. It all melted today.
  22. That's a shame, but that's what the medical redshirts are there for. Sammy Zeglinski at UVA got one under similar circumstances.
