Grundy won the regular season Southwest District Title on Wednesday, Feb 4th. They had already knocked off Richland the Wednesday before. This past Wednesday they defeated Graham, Carroll County and Tazewell. The final district standings going into the District tournament is: 1.Grundy 2.Richlands 3.Graham 4.Carroll County 5.Tazewell The District Tournament will be held at Riverview Middle School in Grundy on Wednesday, February 18th at 4:00 pm. In the current coaches poll in West Virginia Wrestling-Shady Springs is ranked 6th and Greenbrier West is ranked 10th. This past weekend Shady had a lone champion in the very tough WSAZ tournament. Defending AA State Champ Josh Neal(119) won his weight class.

This weekend, Graham will host a tournament. Wrestling begins at 10:00 am. The following teams will be competing in this dual tournament: Graham, Tazewell, Galax, Grayson County, Lebanon, Patrick Henry. Northwood High will host an individual tourney at their place. I'm not sure on the teams. Here are a few that usually compete: Northwood, Rural Retreat, Richlands, Pulaski Co, Ft.Chiswell, Northumberland...??? Northwood has a very solid program. They are currently ranked number five in single A rankings. Try to come out to one of these tournaments. Grundy will travel to Brookville for a dual. Christiansburg will host a tri with Parkersburg H.S. and Cox H.S. In WV there is a tournament at Braxton County High. Shady will be competing in this. Good luck to all teams this weekend. I agree with Lance. Plus give them a couple of years, because they have some great wrestlers in their youth program that are in Middle School now.

Ok, I found a few notes on a Tournament at John Battle High School, but here is all I can give you: 1st-Science Hill TN, 2nd-John Battle, 3rd-Marion, 4t- JJ Kelly, 5th-Richlands, 6th-Tazewell, 7th-Patrick Henry-Glade Springs Don't know any individual results. Please post if you know! Thanks!

I know that many teams wrestled in the John Battle Tournament, like Tazewell and Marion, but I haven't heard anything about it yet. Also, Radford wrestled in the Bison Dual Tournament, but no word on them. Grundy had a tri with Abingdon and Lord Botetourt. Grundy won both matches, beating Abingdon 60-24 and beating Lord Botetourt 48-28. Lord Botetourt beat Abingdon 67-12. This week, a lot of exciting wrestling going on! Shady Spring, Nicholas Co. will be going to the Nitro Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Oak Hill goes to the Greenbrier East Tournament on Saturday. Another Tournament in WV is at Meadow Bridge H.S. on Saturday. In SW Virginia action: there are teams competing in the Virginia Duals on Friday and Saturday in Hampton, Va. including Christiansburg, Grundy, and Abingdon. Graham squares off with swdistrict rival Richlands on Wednesday. Tazewell will hold a tournament on Saturday, with many teams from SW Virginia competing. Grundy High School holds an annual tournament after Christmas... The Agie Skeens Memorial Wrestling Tournament. This year it will be on December 29-30, 2003(Monday and Tuesday) at the new Middle School-Riverview M.S...To get their go into town, instead of taking a right at the T,(like you're going to the High School), you take a left and the school is not too far-it is on the right. This is always an exciting tournament with very good competition from all up and down the east coast. There are many teams in SW Virginia and Southern WV competing. Here are some teams in SW Va and So. WV that usually compete: Grundy, Abingdon, Martinsville, Richlands, Rural Retreat, Northwood, JJ Kelly, Shady Spring-WV. Other teams from up and down the east coast include: Mount Anthony Union-Vermont, Warren Area-Pennsylvania, Sheldon Clark-Kentucky, Lugoff Elgin-South Carolina, Alleghany-North Carolina, Vestavia Hills-Alabama, Rock Hill-South Carolina...plus more. Other powerhouse teams in Virginia include AA Fort Defiance, AA Turner Ashby, AA Northside, A Manassas Park, AAA Franklin County...and many more. Go and enjoy some great wrestling!!!!!

Just read on another forum that Virginia High's Josh Booher(145 lbs...currently ranked #3 in the state) defeated #1 ranked Danny Artusio from James Wood H.S. I will give you a update on how the area teams did when I find out!

One tournament that I have seen that has been postponed is the tournament at Christiansburg. It will be Monday and Tuesday. I have heard nothing about the others.

They have a very young team this year. It also looked like they didn't have every weight class filled. The team is coached by 2 time all-american Travis Fiser. He is an excellent coach! They should have a pretty solid team this year-they do have every weight class filled. The team used to be coached by Kevin Dresser. He is also an excellent coach! Dresser currently coaches at Christiansburg(AA state champs for the past two years). Dresser was also a 2 time all-american (one of those years he was a national champion). Both were coached by Dan Gable, one of the finest wrestlers/coaches ever. Christiansburg did win the title for the past two years, but Grundy was Runner-up both years. Grundy has won it the following times:1978, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996(this year they had 9 state champs, 3 runner-up, and 2 3rd-all 14weight classes in the top three), 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001. Christiansburg won it in 2002 and 2003. Grundy went to the Hanover Duals on Dec. 12-13. The Golden Wave posted a 1-4 record at the tournament. Christiansburg had two wrestlers place it the top 6 respectfully in their individual weight classes: Matt Epperly, a sophomore with a record of 9-1 was Runner-up in the 140 lb. weight class, while senior teammate Jackie Toney(7-3) came in with a 6th place finish. Team champions-Blair Academy is presently ranked #1 in the nation. Other teams in Virginia included: Colonial Forge(23rd in the tournament), Great Bridge(ranked #6 nationally-5th in the tournament) West Virginia teams included: Parkersburg(ranked #34 nationally-6th in the tournament), and Parkersburg South(finished 14th in the tournament). Carroll County competed in the Broadway Gobbler Invitational, and finished 7th of 9 teams. Placers included: Josh Hancock-119 lbs. finished 4th. Kermit Hundley-125 lbs. finished 3rd. Brock Bowman-130 lbs. finished 4th. While J.R. South-140 lbs. finished 3rd. Christiansburg B Team also competed in this tournament finishing Runner-up to Turner Ashby. CBurg B Team had several finish in the top 4 in their respective weight class. Virginia High and Blacksburg competed in the Titan Toughman this weekend. Blacksburg finished 6th, while Va. High finished 12th in a 15 team field. Lord Botetourt won the team championship, while Northside was runner-up. Fieldale-Collinsville wrestled in the Eden Holiday Classic at Morehead H.S.,N.C. The team finished 21st out of 23 teams with Jonathan Pace placing 6th at 112 lbs.
