  1. [ QUOTE ] no offense to liberty, but talk about ruining a local kid's potentially professional career. If mccracken goes to liberty he can throw away any hope of playing in the nfl. And yes, the NFL. If he goes to a big time school and develops as a qb there, you can almost bank on seeing that kid on sundays...and i dont mean in the backyard after church. [/ QUOTE ] While I don't see any direct relationship between Liberty and McCracken's NFL hopes, this actually might not be a bad move for him. The good Rev. Falwell is apparently committed to throwing some serious $$$ into that program (with the stated goal of eventually playing at the Division I level), and it's probably a good opportunity for him to play QB at the collegiate level. College decisions are made based on any number of variables. Heck, on a personal note, I am very pleased with the institutions that granted me my bachelor's and master's degrees. But ultimately I chose them both because of a girl.
  2. [ QUOTE ] Didint Steve Spurrier play high school ball at Science Hill? [/ QUOTE ] Yep. "The old ball coach" would've been class of '63 at Science Hill.
  3. [ QUOTE ] You do mean 1994 not 2004, did't you? [/ QUOTE ] Oops. Yes, I did mean 1994 (and I will edit that post immediate-like). Although it is worth noting that George Brown's status as "The Man" is timeless in and of itself.
  4. [ QUOTE ] I believe the principal had to take over the next year as football coach, whileV aught was an asst. George Brown guided the blues during the mud slinging times. I may add he did a heck of a job holding things together. He had a staff made up of some very promising young coaches also. I guess everyone wants to bring up the bad things about the situation, but few give credit for the ones that lead them through the rough times. [/ QUOTE ] Terry Wess was at the helm during the 1993 season. GB was the head man in 1994 [edited]. And yes, these two guys and some notable others deserve to be cast in bronze for what they did to keep the program moving forward during those very dark and disturbing days.
  5. [ QUOTE ] thanks for the refresher alum ill stand humbly corrected. it still amazes me that a little ole 1/8" can stretch the distance of some 14 years unbeleivable! [/ QUOTE ] If the Blues can ever acquire some new hardware for the trophy case, we can probably put this unbelievably stupid chapter in our history to bed. Although there will always be questions, which is unfortunate to say the least.
  6. [ QUOTE ] It would be really easy to pull for the other SWD teams if the other teams werent always at each other's throats. Fans should give up on hating each other all the time, except on game nite and start pulling for each other. [/ QUOTE ] My experience is that SWD fans have always fallen in behind member schools once playoff time rolls around despite the fact that we're such rabid rivals when we play each other. If that's changed, it's been a fairly recent development.
  7. Some folks, like myself, still question whether or not Carroll County has any business competing in the SWD to begin with. However, since that's a moot point, consider yourself the beneficiary of my support in the playoffs.
  8. [ QUOTE ] Thanks for the responses...I had forgotten about them being banned from post-season play. Another question, however...Does anybody know if there is now a provision in place for illegal equipment? [/ QUOTE ] I am out of my depth on this one, but I believe that the provision for illegal equipment is the same that was on the books as of 1992. Specifically talking about cleat length, the illegal cleats must be removed and the offending team is penalized on the opening kickoff.
  9. [ QUOTE ] old age and high mileage has my memory foggy these days, but was not the equipment violation made in the orange county semi final and salem was beat in the final hands down with no excuses? correct me if im wrong [/ QUOTE ] Orange County was the opponent in the championship game. They had apparently been tipped off by Salem, because the officials checked the length of the cleats during pregame warm-ups and the Blues had to go in and change them out before kickoff.
  10. [ QUOTE ] They were allowed to keep the state title in 92, correct? I understand that it was under protest by Salem. What was the outcome of that protest. Somebody told me that Richlands has an asterisk beside them in the record books. Is that the only punishment they got? [/ QUOTE ] There is no asterisk. That is an urban legend. Otherwise, the info posted elsewhere in this thread is accurate.
  11. I'm next. And I'd like the 3 taco combo meal. Soft tacos, not crunchy. And some of that "fire" sauce too, please. Sorry. It's entirely possible that I didn't read anything beyond the subject header for this thread.
  12. [ QUOTE ] What is your take on the RLEE v. Hburg game? [/ QUOTE ] Harrisonburg is a much better team than Lee. 2 Lee TD's were result of Harrisonburg miscues (interception at the H-burg 20 and muff of the ensuing kickoff). Lee doesn't have the physical conditioning or the heart to compete much farther, IMO. Tough loss, but by the end of the game the Leemen had 4 key players sitting on the bench and the QB had a pretty spectacular outburst on the sideline. Bottom line, I wasn't terribly impressed by either team. If they were to get that far, Amherst would clobber Harrisonburg and Richlands would destroy Lee.
  13. Liberty's season is officially over. The 50-0 shellacking at the hands of Amherst coupled with Lord Botetourt's victory tonight means that the Minutemen stay home for the first time this century.
  14. Just got back from the R.E. Lee-Harrisonburg game. Harrisonburg won 24-21. After shooting themselves in the foot for most of the game, the Blue Streaks came back from a 21-3 deficit, scoring the winning TD with about 25 seconds left. As for Staunton, I don't see them advancing past Region II. If they do, they won't be a threat at the state level. Not nearly physical enough up front and apparently defense isn't an aspect of the game that they teach in the Valley District at all. Richlands would hang 50 on Lee (and for that matter, they'd probably do the same to Harrisonburg).
  15. [ QUOTE ] I came right out of the cheap seats...nothing on but a grin!!! [/ QUOTE ] DON'T LOOK, ETHEL!!!!
  16. I think there's some erroneous information floating about here. Word I get (from a reliable source) is that Palmer was one of the cornerstones of the Raven Twins juggernaut back in the day.
  17. [ QUOTE ] hey alum share a little more of you r-3 wisdom and tell me what happened to hidden valley. they where supposed to be at the top of the heap and cburg handed it to them. (by the way cburg didnt look all that impressive in august) [/ QUOTE ] I think it boils down to a couple of things. Hidden Valley was flat after the loss to Salem the previous week. And while Christiansburg isn't a great team, they aren't a pushover either. The Blue Demons have a pretty well developed (although fairly recent) reputation as a spoiler in Region III. Just a bad combination of variables for Hidden Valley. The Christiansburg loss could prove to be a good thing for the Titans. This week's game against Cave Spring will tell the tale. If HV wins that one, the Titans will be pretty focused heading into the playoffs. A loss throws the region into further chaos at the D3 level.
  18. [ QUOTE ] Anyone here actually seen them in action? It's hard to believe they are not a physical team, I know they have tons of speed. I would like to go see them. [/ QUOTE ] Got my info from sources in the Valley who have seen them in person. And historically, that's been Staunton's MO every year. I will confirm or deny what I've been told after this Friday night.
  19. [ QUOTE ] Are they suppose to be Richlands' biggest competition in Division 3? [/ QUOTE ] Aside from Tazewell, they are currently the next highest rated team in Division 3. Short answer....probably.
  20. [ QUOTE ] Actually there are four teams in Region IV, Division 3 with a shot at a state title. [/ QUOTE ] My two cents.... Tazewell will be the toughest opponent Richlands faces in the postseason by far. And it's not a stretch to imagine the Bulldogs winning that game. Assuming, of course, that the Blues and Doggies win their first round matchups.
  21. Purely academic discussion at this point, since Richlands needs to focus on one game at a time. But the Leemen might not be as big and bad as advertised. They've been taken to the wire the last couple of weeks by Broadway and Spotswood (neither of whom are earth shakers by any stretch). As chance would have it, I'll be in Harrisonburg Friday, and I plan to take in the H'burg-Lee game. Word around the Shenandoah Valley is that Staunton is very fast, but they aren't very physical. Not that it matters a whole lot right now. Go Blues! Win #11!
  22. All the cool kids are jumping on the Rutgers bandwagon in the Big East race, anyway. CATCH SCARLET FEVER!!!!!
  23. [ QUOTE ] Gate City did win it in 1985 and didn't lose to Va High they beat Va High 2-0! haha http://scott.k12.va.us/gchsfootball/yearpages/1985.htm [/ QUOTE ] Ah.... That makes sense. I was looking at an Excel spreadsheet and read it wrong. Thanks for the update, Devil.
  24. [ QUOTE ] richlands would beat any team u put up....salem wouldnt even be a contest..ive seen them play...they couldnt last long enoug to play with richlands...rchlands can score to quick for them to hang... [/ QUOTE ] It's barely possible that Salem's defense might be a tad bit better than the defenses that Richlands has been playing against. Of course, there's no way to know for sure, which is what makes this kind of discussion so much fun.
  25. [ QUOTE ] The best district would be the OLD SOUTH WEST DISTRICT! Where you had 10 teams and if you got through that you were just nasty! You played 9 regular season games and had 1 non-conference opponent. Patrick Henry Marion Virginia High Grundy Abingdon Tazewell Graham Richlands John Battle Gate City I think it broke up in about 1985. Gate City won the Title that year with a 8-1 SWD record, only losing to Graham 3-0 at Graham. They also lost to Sullivan North that year 7-0. Lost in the first round of the Playoffs to Blacksburg 28-14 @ Gate City and that's when Blacksburg was VERY GOOD! Districts now aren't near as good or strong over all. As it stands right now.... I would have to say the LPD is the closest to the OLD SWD. And it is about to be broken up come next year. [/ QUOTE ] Actually, the SWD swelled to 11 teams (Lebanon joined beginning with the 1980 football season), which is what led directly to its breakup. 1985 was the last season for the 11-team configuration, but I don't remember who won the title. I don't think it was GC -- according to the electronic scrapbook site the Devils also lost to Virginia High that year. Factual quibbles aside, I agree that the old SWD really was something special. Who knows? If enrollment continues to slide in the area, the old league could be put back together again.
