  4. Couldn't they just compete in the LPD for wrestling, like Castlewood and St. Paul do?
  5. The Lee High/Magna Vista girls game has been postponed due to the weather...rescheduled for Tuesday, 6 p.m. Also, gane tine for the Lee/Grundy boys game is now set for 7 p.m.
  6. http://www.timesnews.net/sportsArticle.dna?_StoryID=3602973 Highlands District Tournament BRISTOL, Va. - The Highlands District girls and boys championship games, scheduled for Saturday, were canceled due to inclement weather. No makeup games will be scheduled. The Lee High girls will play at Magna Vista on Monday at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the Region IV tournament. The Lee boys, meanwhile, will host Grundy on Tuesday in their Region IV matchup. Tipoff time for that game will be announced Monday.
  7. Yeah, they're not playing at all. I'm sure it was because of the weather. We had probably about 2-4 inches of snow, maybe more in some places here in Lee county, don't know what they had in Bristol or Abingdon. Someone said that it was Bristol who called the game off, they THINK we would've rather played, don't know anything for sure myself. Wet roads and the drop off in temperatures tonight(teens and single digits) may have been a factor. So, I"m sure it was probably in the best interest of all teams involved. I agree with OFISHE8 that this was a good call. If they were going to call the game off tonight then it would've probably been better to cancel it all together. I mean if they pushed it back a day then you have Lee playing the next day in Region play without even a day rest, and then add in that the girls would be traveling to Magna Vista....So, I think it may have been a smart move all things considered.
  8. Yeah, that's correct. My Uncle heard it on the radio and told me they would be playing again Monday, but I just called the radio station and found out that they cancelled the games all together. The part he heard was the Region game for the Lee girls would still be played Monday. Sorry about that, I apologise, should've just called to find out for sure myslef before I posted.
  9. Games have been cancelled! They will play Monday.
  10. No problem.. It does really matter, however, just wanted to mention that I just seen another time in the write-up of tonight's game that says 7:30, but it still said 6:30 for the girls game... again, like I said, it doesn't really matter, I'm sure you get the general idea though haha...it'll be right after the girls game is over.
  11. Abingdon plays Lee at Virginia High School, game time is at 8:00(according to the Kingsport-times) or so, depends since there is two jv games and a girls varsity game before it. I think it said the girls varsity game was set to start at 6:30.
  12. http://www.tricities.com/tristate/tri/sports.apx.-content-articles-TRI-2006-02-16-0020.html ABINGDON – Succeeding in wrestling is about sacrifice. Virginia High’s Brandon Castle gave up his football career to concentrate on the mat. He reaped some more rewards Wednesday night in the Highlands District tournament. Castle became a two-time district champ with a technical fall at 4:26 over Abingdon’s Ken Iscaro and then earned Wrestler of the Year from the district’s coaches. Castle, who improved his record to 31-4, opted to run cross country in the fall and he credits that decision with improving his stamina. Now that he stays stronger for longer, Castle can physically control a match as he did last night, when he piled up near-fall points in the first two periods and wore out his opponent. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do,†Castle said. “Break my opponent down, push him as hard as I can to where he can’t go no more.†A runner-up in last year’s Region IV tournament, Castle hasn’t the slightest idea who his toughest matchup will be when he returns to Abingdon for next weekend’s regionals. “I know I’m going to wrestle some guy,†he said. “I’m just going to worry more about myself and the team.†Castle was the district’s dominant performer, but Abingdon, Marion and Lee all boasted excellent individual efforts. Devon Puriefoy led Abingdon’s charge to the team title, pinning Marion’s Felipe Damatso at 3:15 in the 125-pound class. Puriefoy, who won a regional title last year at 103, upped his mark to 29-5. “It’s been a good year,†Puriefoy said. “I wanted to go out there and be physically dominant, show them what Abingdon wrestling is all about.†Puriefoy has been able to add 22 pounds through maturity and hard work in the weight room. The weight gain didn’t occur at the expense of quickness. “I worked on my agility as well in addition to the strength training,†he said. Puriefoy was one of seven Falcons to notch district titles. Abingdon racked up 199 points, 29 more than runner-up Marion. “Any time you win a district championship, it’s good,†Falcons coach Clayton Scott said. “The kids have put in a lot of hard work throughout the season. You’d certainly rather win than lose.†Marion bagged five individual titles, including Cutler Glenn’s 5-4 verdict at 130 pounds over John Cox. Glenn (34-3) narrowly survived a takedown attempt in the last 10 seconds. “He was really good,†Glenn said of Cox. “He had all his moves down pat and was tough to score against. I think my experience helped me through this one. I just tried to block everything out and wrestle on reactions.†The night ended with heavyweight Lee Cooper of Lee pinning Justin Fantazier at 57 seconds, giving Cooper his 32nd win against just two losses. “The key’s been staying healthy and staying strong,†Cooper said. Every wrestler in the meet qualified for next weekend’s regional event.
  13. http://tricities.com/tristate/tri/sports.apx.-content-articles-TRI-2006-01-27-0051.html Boys Virginia High 55, Marion 49 Evidently, Virginia High learned from Marion’s foul-shooting woes. After the Scarlet Hurricanes (4-13, 0-4) went a combined 7-of-16 in quarters two and three, the Bearcats (11-5, 2-2) canned 10-of-13 in the fourth to solidify their hold on the district’s third spot. In fact, Virginia High’s foul-shooting efforts overshadowed an 0-for-10 effort from the field during the final eight minutes. “Over the last two and a half minutes, we did a lot of things right,†said VHS coach Doug Mitchell, whose squad hit 8-of-11 from the charity stripe over the final 1:09. “We finished the game doing some pretty good things, especially with our kids hitting free throws.†Despite foul-line hiccups, Marion had two chances for a possible tie late. Down 47-44 with just under three minutes remaining, the ’Canes turned the ball over on consecutive possessions. Marion then needed nearly a minute to up its foul total into the penalty area. From there, the ’Cats did the rest. “That kills us ... because we played good defense and were much better on the boards this time,†said Marion coach Dan Duffield of his squad’s foul-shooting problems. “We did a lot of things right that we didn’t do the first time we played them.†A quartet of Bearcats – Daniel Triplett (13 points), C.J. Tillie (12 points, nine rebounds), Terrell Vereen (10 points) and Randy White (10 points) – all reached double figures, while Jordan Burrows and Tim Whisman each netted 16 points for the Scarlet Hurricanes. MARION (49) Burrows 4 5-7 16, Hanna 0 0-1 0, DeBord 2 0-0 4, Whisman 6 4-6 16, Creasy 2 2-2 6, Burton 1 0-0 3, Wolfe 0 0-4 0, Martin 0 0-0 0, Cress 2 0-0 4, Lyon 0 0-0 0. TOTALS 17 11-20 49. Girls Virginia High 72, Marion 15 BRISTOL, Va. – High school basketball doesn’t feature the ever-popular “make it, take it†playground rule. It sure seemed part of the VHSL handbook Friday night. Host Virginia High ripped off the game’s first 25 points, maintaining the Highlands District top spot with a definitive 72-15 victory over Marion. Every Bearcat in uniform found the bottom of the net, especially Morgan Smith and Tonya Stallard. Smith nailed three 3-pointers en route to a game-high 15 points, while Stallard posted a career-best 14. “It was a good night offensively for us,†VHS coach Barry Reed said. “We’re just trying to stay focused and play one game at a time. Then at the end of February, we can look back and see what we’ve accomplished.†The bar is now set for a crucial district showdown next Friday at second-place Lee. Though Virginia High (15-2, 4-0) still has Sullivan East and Tazewell before the Generals, neither the Patriots nor the Bulldogs play in the Highlands. “We know that next week at Lee will be for the marbles,†said Reed. “We’re going to do the best we can. I hope we can get by (tonight) and Tuesday night before we leave, but we’re looking down the road at Lee next Friday night. That’s what we’re focused on right now.†Brittany Snavely had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Marion (0-17, 0-4). 17. http://www.timesnews.net/sportsArticle.dna?_StoryID=3590474 Sunday, January 15, 2006 By GEORGE THWAITES Times-News What'll they call it? The Lonesome Pine District West? The Lonesome Pine District East? The Lonesome Pine District South? Here's a better suggestion: let's call it the District Formerly Known as the Highlands. On Thursday, the LPD principals considered five different proposals for absorbing the VHSL's assignment of Virginia High, Lee High, John Battle and Lebanon. The plan that emerged from that meeting will send Coeburn out of the LPD into the Cumberland and Ervinton out of the Cumberland into the Black Diamond. Gate City, meanwhile, will say goodbye to its short, happy dominance of LPD sports to join the Bearcats, Generals, Trojans and Pioneers in the formation of a new Group A league. What these schools all have in common is that they have all been members of the Group AA Highlands District at one time or another. The only missing components are Abingdon and Marion - apparently headed for Southwest District membership. The only tie this proposed new district has with the LPD is Gate City. And those ties, while historic, have been tenuous at best. Unlike Powell Valley - which was clearly unhappy with the extra mileage involved if the Vikings had been successfully shunted into the proposed new district - the Blue Devils were excited from the outset at the prospect of a new league. "The district was one that I'd chosen along with coach (Nick) Colobro," said Gate City principal Mike Brickey. "Gate City is happy with it. I think it will be good for Gate City and I think it will make the region stronger." Sweetening the deal for Gate City were commitments from Powell Valley, Appalachia, J.I. Burton and Clintwood to keep the Blue Devils as a nonconference opponent in 2007-08 and 2008-09. It seems likely that those schools - Powell Valley for certain - would renew those contracts into the foreseeable future. Gate City has been picking up more interstate opponents in volleyball, basketball and baseball in recent years. A new district may also create opportunities for interstate football matchups in the future. Brickey's only misgiving about what emerged from Thursday's meeting is that the new district is comprised entirely of the region's largest Division 2 schools. But in the long run, that objection may be moot. The formation of the new league may encourage undersized Southwest Virginia Group AA programs that have been playing over their heads to apply for asylum in Region D. "I think Group AA in Southwest Virginia has been propped up by Group A schools for years. You take them out of Group AA and there's not much left," Brickey said. "I'd like to see Grundy, Graham and Tazewell come in eventually. I think the more big schools we have in Region D, the better." Neither Coeburn nor Ervinton are expected to have trouble with their respective assignments under the proposed plan. Cumberland membership is something the Blue Knights have sought in recent years. Geographically, Ervinton shouldn't be any the worse for wear traveling in the BDD. Battle, the newcomer with the coldest feet, seems to be warming up to the idea. Still, there will be room for arguments and objections prior to the final vote in Wednesday's Region D principals meeting. The proposal will require a two-thirds majority to pass. Proposed new members Lebanon, Virginia High, John Battle and Lee High all will have a vote. If that proposal passes, it will be forwarded to the Virginia High School League R&R Committee for consideration during its February meeting.
  18. Anyone know the score of this game? Just heard Lee won by one point, wondered what the final was.
  19. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft06/news/story?id=2283809 Updated: Jan. 7, 2006, 3:16 PM ET Associated Press BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Marcus Vick decided to turn pro Saturday, one day after he was kicked off the team at Virginia Tech for transgressions on and off the field. "I have decided to enter the NFL draft," the junior quarterback said in a three-paragraph statement released through his lawyers. "I am very excited about this opportunity and look forward to proving my athletic ability at the professional level. I believe I am ready for this challenge and the next chapter of my life." Vick said he appreciated all the consideration and trust that Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer had placed in him during his stay at Virginia Tech, and said "I deeply regret that I allowed my competitive emotions to take control" in the Gator Bowl. "To all of the Virginia Tech community, I sincerely apologize." Virginia Tech cited the cumulative effects of Vick's legal problems and his unsportsmanlike conduct in the Jan. 2 bowl in dismissing him from the team Friday. During the game, he was caught on tape stomping on the left calf of Louisville All-American defensive end Elvis Dumervil after a tackle. Vick claimed it was an accident, but school officials said Saturday they thought it looked intentional. "We have received hundreds of letter from fans and alumni who are disturbed by what they saw," university president Charles Steger said at a Saturday news conference. Beamer, who delivered the news of the dismissal to Vick and his mother in person, said he did not advise Vick on whether or not to turn pro, but told him during their meeting Friday that he would help him in any way he could when Vick made his decision. The dismissal hit Vick's mother, Brenda Boddie, hard. "I cried a lot yesterday," she said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "But we're just going to move on and make something positive out of this and Marcus is going to show everybody that he's not the person a lot of people claim he is." She agreed that her son "did the wrong thing" and said she understood why Tech dismissed him, but said she resents seeing her son portrayed as a "monster." Looking ashen, Beamer said he, Steger and Weaver agreed that outcome had to be dismissal from the football team, but that made it no less disappointing. "When I go into a home and talk about how I'm going to do my best to make everything at Virginia Tech successful and be good and then it doesn't reach that -- it's disappointing to me as a coach," he said. "I can tell you he's deeply hurt, he's deeply saddened. I can assure you this kid is very, very hurt, his mom is very, very hurt and I'm hurting with them." Vick was suspended from school in 2004 because of several legal problems, and came under intense scrutiny this week after replays of his actions against Dumervil. Vick claimed it was accidental, but hurt his cause by claiming to have apologized to Dumervil, the NCAA sacks leader. Dumervil said he received no such apology. The last straw came Friday, even as Beamer was preparing to offer Vick the option of accepting a two-game suspension or deciding to leave Virginia Tech. A fax sent to Steger's office disclosed that Vick had been stopped for driving 38 mph in a 25 mph zone and driving with a revoked or suspended license on Dec. 17. Vick had told Beamer about the ticket for driving on a suspended license on Dec. 19, Beamer said, but had never mentioned to anyone that he'd also been caught speeding. Vick's license had been taken away in August 2004 when he was cited for reckless driving and marijuana possession, but had been reinstated until a friend driving a car owned by Vick was pulled over and found to not have insurance, Beamer said. Vick received a citation for that, but an investigation by the school revealed that getting his license reinstated was merely a formality, Beamer said he was told. Vick entered this season trying to win his team's trust and knowing he would face hostility from opposing fans, mostly stemming from his drug arrest and another conviction for serving alcohol to underage girls during the 2003 school year. He said he was ready for anything, but reacted to chants of "rapist!" and "child molester!" at West Virginia on Oct. 1 by gesturing obscenely toward the crowd. He met with Beamer afterward and apologized to the team and to Mountaineers fans. Vick was the runner-up to Wake Forest's Chris Barclay, by one vote, as the conference's offensive player of the year, and was the league's first-team quarterback. In 24 career games, Vick threw for 2,868 yards, 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also ran 184 times for 492 yards and six TDs.
  20. According to the LPD board, Vick will be getting a one game suspension. Of course, we'll have to wait and see on that, but I hope it isn't true. One game won't do anything to him, especially sitting out game like against Kent State(or Fresno State). It may be for the best if he were dismissed from the team, this would really be his "third strike", and remember they did say if he got in anymore trouble then it would all over for him...I wouldn't mind seeing Glennon start at qb for them next season.
