BLUEFIELD BLASTS WAYNE: Daniel Wells pulled the ball away from Wayne quarterback Nick Newell and returned the fumble 63 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive of the Class AA championship. The good fortune was a foreshadowing of events to come as Bluefield recovered six fumbles and intercepted two passes on it ways to a resounding 69-24 victory. The win was sweet redemption for Bluefield (14-0), which lost the AA title game to Poca a season ago when a botched extra point kick cost the Beavers from forcing a second overtime. The time, most of the bounces went Bluefield’s way, and the Beavers knew what to do to capitalize on those breaks. The Beavers defense scored two other times -- a 3-yard fumble return by T.J. Morris in the third quarter and an 80-yard interception return by Mike Davis, also in the third quarter. When the defense wasn’t scoring, it was setting up the offense with prime field position. On Wayne’s second possession, a botched punt resulted in first-and-goal for the Beavers at the Wayne 1. David Perdue ran it in from there for a 13-0 lead. With only 84 yards of offense, Bluefield held a 28-0 lead at the half. The lead grew to 49-6 in the third quarter before Wayne (13-1) got its composure and began running an effective offense. Bluefield quarterback Rusty Coeburn was named his team’s MVP. He threw for 121 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and also recovered one of the Wayne fumbles. Wayne running back Josh Power, who ran for 127 yards and a touchdown, was named his team’s MVP. Bluefield’s Derrick Steptoe ran for two touchdowns and 39 yards. Quintin Steptoe added 46 yards on eight carries and intercepted a pass on defense. Newell threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns for Wayne. The victory marked Bluefield’s second AA championship and eighth overall.

its great that we beat the world champs dont get me wrong, but this is bitter sweet, the huge victory coming this late in the season. may of have ruined our chance for top-pick in the draft.

i didnt make this clear my mistake, i mento to post the whole "grundy vs hurley thing" in swva basketball, because me saying "i miss the back yard braw" means i miss the basketball games between hurley and grundy or hurley and vansant to be honest either way, i was wondering why we dropped them in all sports and i ment for the whole thing to be on Basketball not football.. because we havent played them in basketball in a few years is referring to here we go again witth the back yard braw i correct my self

is grundy a baseball town? NO, is grundy a basketball town? NO, my friend Grundy is a FOOTBALL and WRESTLING town yall dont even have a wrestling program and were 15x va AA state champs and countless SWD winners or either runner ups!!
